Who can eat that many chips?

Fish and chips... I bought three packets of chips between four of us and they were so massive we only managed one and a half. And DH loves his chips and has a big appetite. Who on earth can actually eat a whole packet of chips in addition to their fish?

Or is our chippy serving unusually large portions?

Depends where it is from! Most chip shops, yep, I can. No problem. Our local is huge portions though so we have a large between me and DP and a large between 3 kids (11, 9 and 7).
Totally depends surely?!

Houseofdragonsisback · 16/06/2024 23:12

I’ve never been to two fish & chip’s restaurants that serve the exact same portion size. With regards to being able to eat all of my chips it depends, some I can, some I can’t.

Our fave chippy does a massive family portion. It does cost about £4.50 and serves three or four.

Houseofdragonsisback · 16/06/2024 23:13

Waiting for the “after 3 chips I’m stuffed” brigade to turn up!

billyt · 16/06/2024 23:13

Our chippy gives huge portions. Even a small portion is enough for two people. You have to ask them to stop pouring Grin Even a large cod and large (huge) chips is only £8!

I go there because they cook the fish to order rather than the nearest chippy that cooks in huge batches. Always tasty.

I keep the leftovers and reheat the next day.

Sadly most businesses are infected by the more is more problem. Serve more for less. Convinced that this is a winning strategy. Can't even see how it could work out financially unless cutting serious corners. Typical processed food marketing with the expectation that people are so dumb that they can only perceive size over quality.

if it is good quality then god knows how they're cutting even.
Unless they are super popular.

stayathomer · 16/06/2024 23:15

Ours usually does but the times we’ve asked for one or two instead of three- tiny portions!! Nearly cried!!!

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 16/06/2024 23:15

Reheated chippy chips are the best. Hence we always get two massive portions for 4 adults.

Goldenthigh · 16/06/2024 23:15

We usually share 2 portions of chips between me and 3 teens with hearty appetites. But then we tried ordering our normal amount when we went to MILs local chippy and had to go back and order another couple of portions. So definitely depends!

WeirderandWeirder · 16/06/2024 23:15

Our chippy serves small chips. They are not. One of those does two of us with fish for me and sausage for him. And two mushy peas. And we eat like gannets. Their large chips could feed 4 or 5 easy if you have other stuff. Am definitely not a stuffed after 3 chips person!

WeirderandWeirder · 16/06/2024 23:17

that said, my rugger playing sons and orthorexic daughter eat 20 servings per day.

Ladychatterly86 · 16/06/2024 23:18

£12 West Yorks- Fish and chips twice, plus sauces. More than enough to feed two adults and two children 4 and 2.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 16/06/2024 23:20

I can't, but I save half of them and reheat them in the oven the next day. They cook up perfectly. I used to get a kids meal from my local chippy. £3.50 and the portion size perfect. Now it's about £6 and instead of a small fish is 3 scratty pieces of fish and some chips. Mind you saying that the medium fish and chips I ordered last time cost me £13 and the fish looked anorexic

OptimismvsRealism · 16/06/2024 23:20

I have never not finished the chips in a fish supper, no. Cos I'm not a baby bird.

Nomorecoconutboosts · 16/06/2024 23:21

I think there is a regional variation on portion sizes, very roughly speaking portions are larger in Midlands/North
Unless I’ve been very unlucky in several South chippies.
We are W Mids so the portions are medium/large.
if very hungry I can eat most of a regular portion but otherwise I’d share.
I lived near Wolverhampton for a bit and they put orange batter on the chips - even more filling. I don’t know if I liked it - probably as it was unexpected.

OptimismvsRealism · 16/06/2024 23:24

God I'd hate to eat fish and chips with a "let's share" person. Let's not. And no I won't still be too full for breakfast.

GoogleWhacking · 16/06/2024 23:25

Op you clearly don't visit the chippy near me, where a "large" portion sets you back nearly a fiver and feeds 1.5 adults as long as you have plenty of other stuff. They also refuse to accept card and so only take cash. Pisses me off every time. Despite the shitty portion sizes if they toom card we'd use them so much more. As it is, we go there once in a blue moon.

I'm getting annoyed thinking about them!!

NailsHairNipsHeels · 16/06/2024 23:27

Reheated chippy is my worst nightmare that's why I eat every last morsel slathered in salt and chippy sauce. Not because I'm a fat cow
A fish supper round here is £11, it's worth every penny

I've been known to chop up left over chips the next day and fry them with peppers and onions and salt and pepper seasoning mix. Kind of quick potato hash. Add bacon and a fried egg

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 16/06/2024 23:30

In Australia it's practically the law that the 'minimum chips' offered by any fish and chip shop is enough to feed the entire family. And not a teeny tiny bird family either - proper greedy giants. Nobody ever orders more than the minimum, there's no need.

BobbyBiscuits · 16/06/2024 23:34

I feel thoroughly ripped off if I haven't at least double my own stomach capacity in a portion of chips shop chips. It's a bit wasteful but the idea is just share one between two or pig out.
Sometimes a few get thrown away but its part of the process. That and secretly loving the end bits of the fish even though they're greasy as hell!

Snugglemonkey · 16/06/2024 23:51

I live in Scotland and find it like Ireland when it comes to fish and chips. If you order a fish, you get a handful of chips with it. Quite enough, really. We get one portion of chips in addition to the fish because sometimes dc are in fish mood, sometimes chip mood. You cannot tell until it arrives!

If we get a small fish, you get one reasonably sized fillet battered. A large is either a giant beast of a thing, or two smaller but reasonable fillets. So it it very reasonable to order 2 large fish and a small chip, but feed 4 gannets (2 adults, 1 kid, a toddler.) A large fish is £9, small chip £4, so we feed 4 for £22. It is a monthly treat for us.
