Who can eat that many chips?

Fish and chips... I bought three packets of chips between four of us and they were so massive we only managed one and a half. And DH loves his chips and has a big appetite. Who on earth can actually eat a whole packet of chips in addition to their fish?

Good call. Last night in Suffolk...that's about 1/3 of a portion of large chips with my medium cod.

Peas are done by me - tin of mushy with frozen petit pois, mint sauce, salt, pepper, vinegar.

Is that on a saucer?

I think there is a regional variation on portion sizes, very roughly speaking portions are larger in Midlands/North
Unless I’ve been very unlucky in several South chippies.
We are W Mids so the portions are medium/large.
if very hungry I can eat most of a regular portion but otherwise I’d share.
I lived near Wolverhampton for a bit and they put orange batter on the chips - even more filling. I don’t know if I liked it - probably as it was unexpected.

I have lived in Birmingham pretty much my whole life but never knew orange chips were a thing until I moved Sandwell way. They are amazing! Filling, yes, but wonderful. Portion sizes are definitely larger in the Midlands but the other places I've had fish & chips are usually a bit more holidayish so that might reduce the servings.

I have lived and worked up and down the country and, in my experience, the most generous portions are found in the West Midlands. The tightest in coastal tourist traps, getting worse the further south you go.

People have thought I was joking when I have described the battered chips you can get in the Wolverhampton area.

We freeze the leftovers and Chuck them in the oven at a later date.

GameOfJones · 17/06/2024 07:24

It is so variable. Where I used to live, a large fish and large chips would be easily finished by one person. It was a big portion but still served in a tray and I would eat one to myself easy peasy.

I remember when I moved across the country and ordered a large chips in my new local chippie. I was literally handed a carrier bag full of chips.

So it really depends!

Bigredpants · 17/06/2024 07:24

Another reason to leave London area.
We get a large chips each. It is a lot but perfectly manageable. Comes in a polystyrene tray (fully closed) to give an idea of portion size. Last time we got fish and chip x 4 it was nearly £70.
Wish we had a soggy paper massive portion place nearby!

The enormous chips last night were in a south east coastal tourist town so there must be a lot of variation.
Ours was £8.50 for large cod (me and Dd16 had one between us which was enough) and £3.50 each for the unnecessarily massive portions of chips. At least half a portion of chips got thrown away off the plates, there's a whole unopened one in the fridge (we have an air fryer so will try reheating).

I agree London/SE prices for chippy are mad.

We paid £55 last time for three people … 3 fish, two chips, mushy peas and curry sauce

Al991 · 17/06/2024 07:32

My OH can do it haha. I can make a good go of it but do feel a bit sick after.

There’s certainly not many chips on that plate.

Teeny tinies at the chip shop again. 😅

Awaiting the usual photos to prove how huge the portions are.

I don’t eat fish but have no problem eating a full portion of chips with sides. My family/friends can eat a similar amount. If they can’t, they don’t make a big deal out of it and need to tell anyone. Only my mother and aunt did that and they have eating disorders.

The food threads on here are usually full of people who seem to have eating disorders.

It's a weird attempt at asserting social dominance by some women, I think. See also "breakfast was soooo huge we couldn't have dinner!" Not how the human body works, Cecilie

Norn Iron here so you order a fish you get a scoop of chips ( no extra charge ) and tbh, unless you have starved all day, it really is enough

Order a fish supper and its two fish and a largish chip

Im not a "genteel" feeder when it comes to a chippy - more of a gorb tbh - but me and DH can easily share a sausage or fish supper and be totally stuffed to the gills

Just wondering where you get that much, two bits of fish sounds awesome. By the time my cat gets share I usually end up with batter 😂. Will travel anywhere in Northern Ireland for a decent chippy. I'm at the seaside and often it's overpriced tourist portions.

mitogoshi · 17/06/2024 07:52

Varies a lot! We buy a large fish and chips between us if hungry, medium if not so much. My old house had a shop where a standard large chips plus fish fed 4 (though dd being veggie cooked herself fried eggs) but sometimes at the coast especially portions are mean, at my parents you need one each

BigDahliaFan · 17/06/2024 07:57

Me….(small voice),

mitogoshi · 17/06/2024 07:59

@BoatAcrossTheBay

I don't have photos but a "portion" where I used to live once wrapped up filled one of those traditional disposable carrier bags we used before bags for life (coop still have them here) huge, where I live now it's on the coast, and use boxes so about half the quantity of chips but same size fish AND nearly twice the price but it's good and it's a proper fish restaurant as well as takeaway, serving "Michelin" type dishes aka fancy

LovelyDaaling · 17/06/2024 08:06

I think it partly depends on how quickly you eat. If you're a fast eater, it's possible to eat more before feeling stuffed. We're slow eaters and buy one of chips and two fish and still end up with ample chips.

BouleDeSuif · 17/06/2024 08:15

I get a large chips from our local place and it's enough to very much fill me, the child and the dog, with leftovers for the dog in the morning.

I'm fat too so I'm certainly not being competitively under eat-ey.

I know it's not good for the dog, but we only get them once a month or so.

The fish is £7 by itself so I've given that up.

CurlewKate · 17/06/2024 08:20

Chip shop chips freeze brilliantly. You can thank me later

Waiting for the “after 3 chips I’m stuffed” brigade to turn up!

They were here from the start 😂

Small chips at my local

OptimismvsRealism · 16/06/2024 23:20

I have never not finished the chips in a fish supper, no. Cos I'm not a baby bird.

Me too! 😁

spikeandbuffy · 17/06/2024 08:29

Small chips at my local

While that is generous

I could still eat it all

(Woman, size 8, blablabla)

What on earth is with the soup, though?

OptimismvsRealism · 17/06/2024 08:32

Honestly the thought of being bullied into "oo let's share" makes me so cross. Should be a trigger warning on this thread.

SallyWD · 17/06/2024 08:33

I'm a bit embarrassed to admit it but I can actually eat a large portion of chips (and fish) plus finish off my kids chips! And my kids eat barely any chips so I'm more or less eating two portions!
I can eat more chips than anyone else I know! I'm not overweight but I do eat in moderation the rest of the time.
