Who can eat that many chips?

Fish and chips... I bought three packets of chips between four of us and they were so massive we only managed one and a half. And DH loves his chips and has a big appetite. Who on earth can actually eat a whole packet of chips in addition to their fish?

@OptimismvsRealism Grin it's Irish curry sauce

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 17/06/2024 09:07

In the name of science, some of us are going to have to weigh some chip portions.
Portions round here vary from a sad handful to best part of a carrier bag.

spikeandbuffy · 17/06/2024 09:18

I think with some foods it's different
Like I can eat pizza or a dessert and custard until it comes out of my ears GrinBlush
Pasta on the other hand I can only manage a small portion

It's really not teeny tiny or an eating disorder to not be able to eat an entire portion of fish and chips in a lot of places, the portions are twice as big as a normal meal. They come in a cardboard box that is as long and nearly as wide as an A4 sheet and will not close, it's so full.

Here the fish is so long that it hangs off both sides of a large dinner plate - these are the plates that wouldn't fit in our old kitchen cupboards because they themselves were modern large ones from Ikea.

Then you can't really get all the chips on the plate as well, there's just too many. DP and I will usually have a fish each and share a portion of chips which is more than enough, or if it's just me, I'll usually save most of the chips to make a massive chip omelette the next day.

Isobel201 · 17/06/2024 09:23

I only eat half the amount of chips - I seem to get big portion for a single person.

TheUndomesticGoddess · 17/06/2024 09:25

OptimismvsRealism · 17/06/2024 08:31

While that is generous

I could still eat it all

(Woman, size 8, blablabla)

What on earth is with the soup, though?

It doesn’t look particularly generous for a chip shop portion.

Mumsnet is very, very weird about food. So many examples of disordered eating on the threads about food. It’s very pro ana. I only hope that they’re not passing their skewed views onto their children.

Ime people who don’t have issues with food just eat and get on with life. They don’t overly think about portion sizes, don’t feel the need to comment or talk or write about portion sizes, how full they are, think about how much others can eat or prove what they’re eating with photos

Soboredofdiettalk · 17/06/2024 09:25

I'm far from a teeny tiny, but agree. Where we are the chips are massive portions! We share one between two with a few leftover for dh who claims not to want any every time

spikeandbuffy · 17/06/2024 09:37

@TheUndomesticGoddess it probably helps to show the square plate is genuinely huge
Standard tin

I'm not a teeny tiny, I'm overweight and don't calorie count but I struggle with chips and pasta
I could eat unlimited apple crumble and custard happily though!

Who can eat that many chips?

Waiting for the “after 3 chips I’m stuffed” brigade to turn up!

Exactly. Not this competitive shit again.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 17/06/2024 09:42

My local chip shop gives you a serving of chips that looks like a football wrapped in hot paper. If you only want a half football sized portion you have to say "Small chips. Small!".

Everyone gets it wrong the first time and then you see them staggering out under the weight of chips with a startled look on their faces.

You are over explaining and have now posted 2 photos as ‘evidence’. It is very odd. Being overweight doesn’t mean that you don’t have disordered eating and issues with food.

Oh god, now the portions are so big and heavy that people can’t walk with them, they actually ‘stagger’ and are startled. 🤣🤣🤣

spikeandbuffy · 17/06/2024 09:48

Pretty sure if I had food issues I wouldn't have eaten that plate of food but NVM
I was posting on a discussion and then realised it was hard to see the size without context
I'll stick to being able to eat an entire large pizza but only half a portion of the chips

AmelieTaylor · 17/06/2024 09:50

In land SE. The sizes have become pathetic & the cost has gone way up. Might need a trip up north to get some chips that'll be nice & wont bankrupt me!

JudgeJane · 17/06/2024 09:53

mitogoshi · 17/06/2024 07:52

Varies a lot! We buy a large fish and chips between us if hungry, medium if not so much. My old house had a shop where a standard large chips plus fish fed 4 (though dd being veggie cooked herself fried eggs) but sometimes at the coast especially portions are mean, at my parents you need one each

At mine you need 2 portions of your whole order, each. They are ridiculously small.

BridgertonFan · 17/06/2024 10:09

Agree that disordered eating is very common on mumsnet.

Bjorkdidit · 17/06/2024 10:16

It's certainly disordered to take the piss out of people who eat a normal amount of food and are able to stop eating when they are full even if there is food still on the plate because the portion served was very large.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 16/06/2024 23:12

Our fave chippy does a massive family portion. It does cost about £4.50 and serves three or four.

Wow it's £15 for fish and chips near me 😅

aintnospringchicken · 17/06/2024 11:36

If DH and I want a fish supper from our local chippy( once in a blue moon)we order one fish supper and a single fish then share the chips.

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/06/2024 11:40

Oh, I can 😁 We’re a couple of hours from the often awarded best fish and chips in the UK. Very, very occasionally, we drive there for supper, order large and relish every single mouthful, sat looking at the sea and the Islands.
Don’t usually eat again until dinner time next day, though Tbf.

Sadly most businesses are infected by the more is more problem. Serve more for less. Convinced that this is a winning strategy. Can't even see how it could work out financially unless cutting serious corners. Typical processed food marketing with the expectation that people are so dumb that they can only perceive size over quality.

if it is good quality then god knows how they're cutting even.
Unless they are super popular.

Hmmm, it’s been a while since I’ve seen any food outlet (pub or takeaway) offering anything “for less”.
Large portions - yes, sometimes. Not always. But the prices have gone up quite a bit everywhere around here.

Kentishtownie · 17/06/2024 12:36

One large feeds us for three meals - I just reheat as needed.😅

Honestly, I don't think it's a regional thing, because I live in the north and my mum lives in the south-east and her local chip shop does much bigger chip portions than mine does.

mondaytosunday · 17/06/2024 12:40

Chips are cheap to make so guess they think it makes people think they are getting their money's worth. Agree portions are huge.
