WhatsApp Groups - How many are you in?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 13/06/2024 10:33

We've got This Morning on in the background at work and apparently the average Brit is in 83 WhatsApp groups.

That can't be true can it? I'm in one, am I the unusual one?

None 🙄

BIWI · 13/06/2024 10:36

I've just checked, and I'm in 73. However, many of those are old/dead ones that were set up for short-term purposes, e.g. arranging a surprise birthday party for someone.

I'd say it's odd to just be in one though!

Magenta65 · 13/06/2024 10:36

2 different friendships groups, a work chat, family chat and a hen do. 83 is actually ridiculous. Over time I’ve likely had around 50 chats but only this 5 are active now and I deleted the dead ones.

betterangels · 13/06/2024 10:38

I hate group chats. I've been in a few. I left.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 13/06/2024 10:38

A big, fat zero - nor do we do facebook, tiktoked, instas etc etc - all a laod of trouble from the threads I have read on MN and other places

Idontjetwashthefucker · 13/06/2024 10:40

The one I'm in is a work one and it's pretty much people sharing stupid memes so I'll be removing myself from that one soon.

What do you all talk about in these groups?

IWantToBeASleepingCat · 13/06/2024 10:41

None.
Sometimes both my daughters add me so we can chat together.. but it's not group chat.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 13/06/2024 10:41

I've often wondered if I'm antisocial as I'm in so few and those I am in are dead quiet! Probably six "active" ones, by this I mean ones where someone posts at least once a month 😅

DH is in loads, his mates, his little army groups, his table tennis groups, family stuff.

Perhaps we should set up a WhatsApp group for us loners?! 😅😅😅

EasterlyDirection · 13/06/2024 10:41

I'm in about 80, of which about 20 are in regular or fairly recent (last couple of months) use, the rest are occasional or old ones I've never left. In an average week I probably use 5 or 6 of them and one or two messenger groups.

Ineedaholidayyyy · 13/06/2024 10:41

That does sound like a lot, I am in 6 that I use frequently.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 13/06/2024 10:41

So far it doesn't seem I'm THAT unusual then...not that I care really, was just interested how you could be in 83 groups.

I'm in one neighbourhood one, where we talk about all kinds of local things - lots of items being given away, or people asking to borrow stuff. Notifications of local travel issues, etc.

Several different family ones, depending on family members/which side of the family.

Different friendship groups, one for general chat, others for arranging social events with each other.

DoYouSmokePaul · 13/06/2024 10:43

I think the only ones I’m in are different combinations of family members! So one for me, parents and brother, one of just me and parents. One of me, DH and parents. On of me, DH, BIL and SIL, etc.

You really have to be careful you send to the right set of people 🫣

BusyCM · 13/06/2024 10:44

Just counted- 27, about 20 are active.

MasterOfCake · 13/06/2024 10:46

Just counted - 96 groups but only 23 are still active.

Ineedwinenow · 13/06/2024 10:46

I’m in 41, 16 of which are active, the rest are old and not used anymore

funmamamoo · 13/06/2024 10:48

I'm in a lot for work and different friendship/family groups. We use them to arrange dates/days outs or just have a rant.

Some old groups were set up for a specific event but I'm very quick to leave those after event is over... whatsapp can take a lot of memory storage 😂

CertainAppealToIt · 13/06/2024 10:48

I just counted...11 regularly used groups.

  • Me/dh/dc
  • Me/dh/my family and their partners
  • Me/dh/his family and their partners
  • Me and my sisters
  • Work team (social) group
  • Youngest dc class parents
  • Slimming World group
  • x 4 various sporting groups for dc activities

There are lots of other groups I've been in but for one off events - coach or teacher or colleague collections, specific trips or events etc, now defunct. It would probably bump up my total groups to closer to 100 as they go back years but that figure would be a bit misleading.

I don't think the average person would have close to 100 active groups, that's bonkers.

Bonjovispjs · 13/06/2024 10:50

One. With my employers, I'm a nanny and they're the parents, so it's all kid related.

weescotlass · 13/06/2024 10:51

I was going to say 5 but then I checked - and it's over 100!

Most are inactive, I don't even remember being part of them. The active ones are family, friends and related to DC activities.

I think I need a massive clear out now.

BusyCM · 13/06/2024 10:52

Ben Shephard said he was in 400!!

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 13/06/2024 10:52

About 10

Bjorkdidit · 13/06/2024 10:59

How can people possibly keep up with 83 groups?

I'm in 4, 3 of them for a sports club I'm in and one for a different one I used to be in. Then I use it to communicate individually with DP, friends, family and work colleagues.

BusyCM · 13/06/2024 10:52

Ben Shephard said he was in 400!!

I KNOW! How is that even possible?! How on Earth would one keep up?
