WhatsApp Groups - How many are you in?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 13/06/2024 10:33

We've got This Morning on in the background at work and apparently the average Brit is in 83 WhatsApp groups.

That can't be true can it? I'm in one, am I the unusual one?

9 active ones - mostly to do with the school 😫 the others are family/friend groups.

MeinKraft · 13/06/2024 11:57

4 x long running friendship group chat
1 x chat about an upcoming event
School class one
Sons football club one
Several abandoned ones about old birthday parties, clubs my son used to go to and old work chats with people who have now left

Frankgodno · 13/06/2024 12:16

I always leave a group if its been inactive for a while. Especially the event chats, once its happened why would you stay in it?

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 13/06/2024 12:20

10 groups I've used within the last week
10 more groups I've used within the last 3 months
Another 5 groups that are sporadic and get used in a flurry then not for a while

I'm good at leaving and deleting a group once the event is over though.

LandPuff · 13/06/2024 12:24

None. I’m not very young though and not very techie plus I’m not mad about small talk. I was in a holiday one and I could see it as being useful, then it got a bit weird and I was glad to leave.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 13/06/2024 10:40

The one I'm in is a work one and it's pretty much people sharing stupid memes so I'll be removing myself from that one soon.

What do you all talk about in these groups?

Weird question....same as you would talk about with the relevant people in real life?

I agree that 83 active WhatsApp group seems quite unlikely- would assume between 3-10 would be the norm and others defunct ones set up for a specific occasion that has now passed.

BertieBotts · 13/06/2024 12:29

I've just counted and I am in 53. But only 8 of those are current/that I'd actually post in, and of the 8, only 4 are active - a group for a local regular meetup, my family group with mum/sister, a group where we arrange weekly online game nights and then one for an event/night out which will probably go dormant after the event.

I suppose in mine they just dropped down the chats list and I forgot they existed

So far it doesn't seem I'm THAT unusual then...not that I care really, was just interested how you could be in 83 groups.

I think pretty easily if you have kids or different friendship groups or hobbies, many of these are short lived though once an event or arranged weekend/holiday has passed.

Each child's class has one and there is a new one each time there's a birthday party (short lived).

Have quite a few friendship ones (school, university, work friends) which are subgroups of big groups, e.g. the ppl who live in a particular town, or the ppl who do a particular hobby.

Then family and in-laws with sub groups for siblings, just parents etc.

Work - try to avoid these but we have a few when there's a work trip abroad

Muffin101 · 13/06/2024 12:32

Two. But I’ve got about fifteen group chats on messenger that are active. Family ones, from both sides, toddler groups, old work mates, friends of varying circles.. that sort of thing. I can’t believe some of the numbers, surely they’re not all active?! 😱

buffyslayer · 13/06/2024 12:35

One for work, one for our netball team

sanityisamyth · 13/06/2024 12:36

Hundreds!

pinkspeakers · 13/06/2024 12:40

About 20 active in the last month. Lots in total, but many are completely dormant. I don't see a simple way to count the groups separate from chats with individuals but I am probably being dozy.

JamSandle · 13/06/2024 12:40

Quite a lot but I'm a huge communicator and it makes me happy

Idontjetwashthefucker · 13/06/2024 12:49

loropianalover · 13/06/2024 11:37

Surely 83 can’t be right!! Have they mixed up
’chats‘ and actual groups? As PP have mentioned, surely 90% of groups would be defunct (old bday plans, holiday plans from years ago) so they shouldn’t count.

I’m in groups from peoples birthday party plans etc. over the years, but none are active so I’d say I’m in zero group chats.

Nope, it was definitely groups - a few of us were watching open mouthed, like a PP said, I don't have that many friends!

Ones i use regularly - prob about 10 but there are quite a few that i was in at some point and never left but no one messages in.

LilyBartsHatShop · 13/06/2024 13:30

I got rid of it recently which felt really good. But I have noticed not using WhatsApp effects my social life, and my child's, too.

So I haven't made up my mind what to do long term.

EasterlyDirection · 13/06/2024 14:00

Some are more chatty than others which are purely functional but I have as follows:

Work x 2 (whole place and just dept)
Groups of friends (just chat and arranging meetups) x 7
Hobby / interest groups x 5
Different combinations of family members x 4
Dozens of defunct ones for parties etc, I had them for lots of my DCs school and hobby groups too but they are grown up now and sort themselves out.

RosePetals86 · 13/06/2024 14:05

I’m in a work chat, a class chat for my eldest and 2 chats relating to extra curricular activities for dc. Been added to chats for parties etc but they die off after the event. Tbh I’m not a fan and often have them muted and archived. Will add my 2 pence once in a blue moon.

AlwaysCloudyAtNoon · 13/06/2024 14:09

Hardly any.

One for DH's sport as he does not have that sort of phone and kept turning up to things when they had been cancelled.

One for a friendship group

One for my bookclub

One with work colleagues (it's seasonal work only though so quiet 10 months of the year) but it's a nice group

I was in the class one as well but left it because two of the mothers had a huge barney and it played out on whatsapp and it was too irritating and juvenile.

darksigns · 13/06/2024 14:16

Three: Work team, hobby and school class parents.

Orchidacea · 13/06/2024 14:18

One, from a Meetup pub quiz group. It's sort of fun, but a lot of the members have very different interests to mine.
I wouldn't mind another one based on common interests.

elliesmummy19 · 13/06/2024 15:09

9 active groups.

Couple of groups with friends
Couple of family groups
Two groups for two separate voluntary jobs
One for a language I’m learning (with my classmates)
A couple for a couple of different hobbies

TokyoSushi · 13/06/2024 15:12

13 active ones, I could probably make it to 83 is you counted dormant groups.

Frostandfrogs · 13/06/2024 15:20

Ive got 3 and I'm quite happy with those. Recently deleted a couple but I've also become familiar with the lock/archive/mute facilities, which are very useful. Especially when I had a work one, which would keep pinging on my time off.
