We've got This Morning on in the background at work and apparently the average Brit is in 83 WhatsApp groups.

That can't be true can it? I'm in one, am I the unusual one?

OP posts:

0 on WhatsApp but in lots of discord servers for hobbies and friend group chats.

NewName24 · 13/06/2024 19:08

Just counted and I've got 269 different threads.
Quite a few of them are chats with individual people
Many of them are for particular events (I could delete or archive, but they aren't exactly bothering me, just sitting there).

NewName24 · 13/06/2024 19:13

I realise that might be a lot, but am surprised how few so many people heve.

I mean, just family, I have

  • just me and dh
  • just me and each of the dc (so that's 3 more)
  • the whole family (that grew up in our house) - not really used now
  • the whole family with dc's partners
  • me and my sis
  • me and my brother
  • me and my SiL
  • me and SiL on the other side
  • me, dh and his sis and BiL
  • The whole extended family on his side
  • The whole extended family on my side
  • Me and a cousin of mine
  • One with me, my db and my dsis
  • One with dh, his dsis, dbil and their parents

I find WhatsApp really useful.

@NewName24 do you mean you have made groups for chats between you and one other?

@NewName24 do you mean you have made groups for chats between you and one other?

I think you're talking about normal conversations? I think OP was asking about groups.

merryhouse · 13/06/2024 21:31

One for the street
one for the karate class
four for talking about presents (the other 4 people have one for mine Grin)
one for when S2 wants to send messages to both of us

H is in the same ones (apart from one present one, obvs) and the other karate class and the karate instructors' group. He's also trying to get our choir director to set one up, but I think that's a bit optimistic.

So, are you counting a 'chat' as being just you and one person, and a 'group' as being anything with more than two people in ?
Or is there a higher minimum number for it to be a 'group' ?

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 13/06/2024 21:47

I'm in a lot - which means maybe 25- but mostly with the same people. So we have one for X event or a weekend away or something like that. All related to cycling normally, few family ones I never post in. If you have a busy hobby it kind of makes sense to have a lot of shorter term ones that serve their purpose.

Huifen · 13/06/2024 21:49

Loads -I hate it. One with my siblings, one with DHs wider family, 1 for each of my kids classes, 1 for each of my kids sport squads, 1 with friends from work. I find it exhausting and tend to mute them all and just check once every couple of days

trainboundfornowhere · 13/06/2024 22:00

Five groups. I’m a brownie guider so 1 group is for the leaders, unit helpers and young leaders and 1 is for letting the parents know things. One is my parents and siblings, one is former colleagues as we still try and meet up once a month and one is my current colleagues. The one for current colleagues is generally updated by the manager and team leader if they’re not happy with something or to ask us who can work an extra shift.

IwishIdidntlikesugar · 13/06/2024 23:00

21 plus about 6 that arent used at all. My phone pings frequently.
