WhatsApp Groups - How many are you in?

Idontjetwashthefucker · 13/06/2024 10:33

We've got This Morning on in the background at work and apparently the average Brit is in 83 WhatsApp groups.

That can't be true can it? I'm in one, am I the unusual one?

OP posts:
LibisMum · 13/06/2024 11:06

16 - but only about 6 are active

2 family groups, 2 friends groups (one local, one old friends now living miles apart ) and 2 for hobbies.

No wonder people feel overwhelmed by SM if they are members of more than that 😱

Crunchymum · 13/06/2024 11:08

24 but a load of them are old (kids parties etc)

Will have a cull and report back.

Lentilweaver · 13/06/2024 11:08

4 or 5. Two family groups as my family scattered. 3 for my hobbies. Had to leave my uni group as so annoying.

parkrun500club · 13/06/2024 11:11

83? Blimey.

Well I well and truly bring the average down as I am in about six!

83! That can't be right, how stressful would that be to manage.

I am in 5 groups 2 are not very active tbf

Jettyspaghetti · 13/06/2024 11:12

4 active ones.
2 friendship
1 family (me, DW and DD) where I give instructions to hang washing out or put tea on 😂
1 local business watch, which is basically just grainy CCTV photos of shoplifters.

BearSoFair · 13/06/2024 11:14

Nine and that feels like too many some days!

Four work related
Three friend groups
One family
One for the street

TheDandyLion · 13/06/2024 11:15

1 - group of us from a previous work team.

Right I've whittled it down to 11.

I only really use 5 of these chats though (3 are kids classes, 1 family and the last group is me and my two closest friends)

DowntonCrabby · 13/06/2024 11:17

Under 20 that are active and I either participate in or have to at least keep an eye on.

SilverSimca · 13/06/2024 11:20

Well I am in a lot but they are mostly just set up for particular occasions, like "going to the beach" or "X's 50th" or "let's arrange a catch up". And then I am in a lot which are specific combinations of friends - Friends A, B, C and D; Friends D, E, F and G; Friends E and E's husband; Dh and two DS's - etc etc. Some are used a lot, some just if someone needs to contact all of those particular people (eg "Friends A, B and C, what are you getting Friend D for her birthday?") so they slip right down the list

And then I have DS's drama group, my book group. DH is in one for our street but I am not on that one.

I guess my most active ones are 4 uni friends and me; 4 school friends and me; book group.

Minikievs · 13/06/2024 11:21

I've just checked. I'm in 41. But this is a push for me to delete a lot of those.

I have 15 where they've been active within the last month.

chineapplepunks · 13/06/2024 11:22

I'm in 22, I'd say it's a fairly even split between active and non-active ones!

katebushh · 13/06/2024 11:22

Apart from DS schools class one hardly any. I've left a fair few over the years because I cannot fucking stand the indecision and incessant nonsense.

In my opinion if people can't speak on the phone or make a decision I do not want to know. I'm too old and I find most people dull as dishwater!

CMOTDibbler · 13/06/2024 11:22

Just one for a volunteering thing coming up

WildCountry · 13/06/2024 11:23

I've just checked and I'm also in over 80. Mostly old and inactive for specific events. Quite a few are active though. Kids class ones, work colleagues, sport friends, family, in laws etc

snowlady4 · 13/06/2024 11:30

83?
Surely not. I don't even have 83 friends!
I'm in a family chat, a hobby related chat, a friend chat and thats it. I decline any work chats and occasionally will be in a short term chat for a hen do/holiday or something.

MidnightMeltdown · 13/06/2024 11:32

More than I want to be (which is 3). Bloody hate WhatsApp groups and getting random tosh sent to my phone.

SeatedattheVirginals · 13/06/2024 11:34

Idontjetwashthefucker · 13/06/2024 10:41

So far it doesn't seem I'm THAT unusual then...not that I care really, was just interested how you could be in 83 groups.

Lots of them would be defunct, though — groups made to arrange an outing three years ago, groups to RSVP a child’s birthday party etc. I mean, I’m technically ‘in’ 67, but those include long-dead groups for work trip arrangements, a class WhatsApp for a school DS left in 2019 etc. I probably have about six or seven actually relatively active — two family ones, an editorial collective work one, DS’s class parents’ WhatsApp, and a DS sports team one, and another with his friends’ parents used for swapping lifts etc, and I mute a couple of those and just check periodically.

loropianalover · 13/06/2024 11:37

Surely 83 can’t be right!! Have they mixed up
’chats‘ and actual groups? As PP have mentioned, surely 90% of groups would be defunct (old bday plans, holiday plans from years ago) so they shouldn’t count.

I’m in groups from peoples birthday party plans etc. over the years, but none are active so I’d say I’m in zero group chats.

ReignOfError · 13/06/2024 11:38

I just looked: 30. Seven or eight are very active, another three or four are regularly but less often active, and three are with overseas friends I travel with, so have a few weeks of mad activity, followed by months of nothing, every year.

So at least half are just clutter and I’m now prompted to remove them.

DoYouSmokePaul · 13/06/2024 11:41

Ok, I have 74, but about 50 are from pre 2020 and never used.

I have about ten actives.

Natsku · 13/06/2024 11:45

I'm only in 10. Nursery one, DD's volleyball one, and a friend one are the only ones that are frequently used at the moment, though my 2 school ones were used almost daily until school ended. Others are ones for children's hobby groups that are only used for reminders, and one that was used just to organise end of year presents.

familyissues12345 · 13/06/2024 11:47

Loads - I can't really be bothered to count - but about 15 are still active, with about 5 of those used regularly (every 1-2 days)

  • home group
  • my side group
  • 3 friends groups

Fortunately I changed jobs recently, we have a WhatsApp group but it's linked to my work phone so I don't have it pinging often!

BeaRF75 · 13/06/2024 11:47

Two. One for volunteering. One for a small group of friends. That's plenty.
