Anyone else loving the weather?

I'm so enjoying the cooler than normal weather. I can spend more time in the garden without getting hot and sweaty. Love sleeping in a cool bed. Can go for nice long walks. Less noise from neighbours. Win. Win.

Just seen that a few big local outdoor events have been cancelled. Such a shame after all that planning. How anyone can Iove endless rain and all these outdoor events ruined I have no idea.

Exactly. So much time and money wasted and big summer events are where smaller organisations get a chunk of funds to help with the following years costs.
And what farmers have to deal with

People who can stay in all cosy can do that when the sun is out. Just close the curtains/blinds and forgo a blanket.

They just come across as gleefully miserable and selfish. At least they like staying at home so that's one thing i guess

Jellycats4life · 06/07/2024 12:01

Same here - a big community event cancelled tomorrow. All the vendors, food sellers and entertainers losing business.

it’s utterly foul out there.

I don’t love heat but I do enjoy sunshine and blue skies. Dreading the thought of never getting much of a reprieve from the dark, depressing damp before “summer” is over and the unrelenting winter dark and damp sets in for a solid seven months or so.

I’ve never suffered from SAD but I think it’s setting in now 😅

Michiru · 06/07/2024 12:03

12C and raining. It's so dark outside.

We've had our week of sunshine and summer weather I guess.

Though it does seem to brighten up a bit as we approach the summer holidays, so I am holding out hope. There are 3 full days in a row without rain forecast!

I'm going to Kew the music on Tuesday. At the moment it's forecasting heavy rain all day, just desperately hoping it might have changed by then, or there'll be a lot of sodden Mika fans.

Ah it’s such a shame. And you can’t rely on any forecast. Fingers crossed it’s ok.

Thanks, I've never checked the weather forecast so much in my life 🤣 I'll enjoy it no matter what, but obviously nice weather would be preferable.

It is a nightmare for all the events.

DD's Scout group has a huge all-pack camp next weekend, Squirrels up to Explorers. The week after she is cast in an Open Air theatre for 5 nights.

All the school fairs who really rely on the money they raise.

feellikeanalien · 06/07/2024 15:55

Sitting with my dressing gown on over my clothes and DD has her oodie as I don't want to put the heating on. Sky is grey and threatening rain. That is the forecast for the foreseeable future.

Still at least our holiday in the north of Scotland later this month might have slightly less midgies this year because of the cold.😁

Delatron · 06/07/2024 23:04

I think there are signs it will warm up slightly from the 15th. I don’t trust this will happen! But a bit of hope..

Hopefully as that's St Swithan's Day and I don't think I could cope with 40 days of rain.

St Swithin's Day: What is it and why do people think the weather today is important?

It is St Swithin's Day on 15 July. According to old stories, this means that whatever the weather is on that day could affect the next 40 days!

Due to visit an outdoor venue today with visitors and the forecast is for pouring ☔ 😢

MaryFuckingFerguson · 07/07/2024 12:42

We’ve got a load of people coming over - family and neighbours. We just asked that they come at 4 instead of 2 🤞

I think all the posters who love this awful weather must never spend any time outside, are extremely introverted and hate any kind of community event.

We have had loads of stuff cancelled, and the charities, churches, schools and other organisations that benefit from various fund raisers are all struggling; not to mention the disappointment the organisers, helpers and visitors of these events are facing.

LlynTegid · 07/07/2024 13:00

Happy with the temperature, hate the rain.

Iamtarticus · 07/07/2024 13:08

Unless it's torrential and stormy, why does a bit of rain lead to cancelling events?

Well here it has been pretty torrential but events get cancelled because the ground is often too wet to host the events surely that's not difficult to understand?

Not me. But it's not been too bad here. Nothing cancelled as far as I'm aware. We had the school fair yesterday and had to make some changes, used the hall a bit more and we had one huge shower where we had to run stalls under the trees but then the sun came back out and we carried on.

And it was jumper warmth not t-shirt but that's much more comfortable being out in all day in a field and not needing suncream or hats.

It does indeed sound shit and disappointing and annoying if you're in a bit of the country that's been truly awful but here it's been a reasonable mixture of rain and dry without getting too hot so really quite a lovely summer so far.

I think only the cosy, lazy sofa brigade will agree with you ‘that it’s been a lovely summer so far.’

I don’t want to wear a jumper in summer. Yesterday was horrific down here - wind, rain and about 15 degrees. Same Friday, same today. I’d love to have the ‘hassle’ of rubbing a bit of suncream on rather than having to ruin my lovely outfit (new dress) with a big coat and an umbrella. And I was still freezing and we couldn’t sit outside.

Unless it's torrential and stormy, why does a bit of rain lead to cancelling events?

You often struggle setting up stalls on totally saturated grounds, same with marquees or tents you need to secure in the ground. DD once camped after a week of total downpours with the Scouts and the moment they lay down onto their air mats in the evening, the ground gave and water leaked everywhere.

If you have things like jousting, the soft and wet ground can be very dangerous for the horses.

It hasn’t been ‘ a bit of rain’ it has rained heavily for 3 days and there’s a flood warning out. Honestly!

lollipoprainbow · 07/07/2024 13:23

No I waited ten years to get a garden now I can't sit in it !!

Which is why I said if you're somewhere it's really been shit then I agree, sounds disappointing. But it hasn't been like that here so for me, where I am, it's been lovely. Today has been some rain, bit of wind, loads of sunny spells. Dog jas been walked in wet muddy woods and loved it. And it's cool at night.

I don’t think anywhere in the county is nice today. It’s subjective but personally, rain, wind and a bit of sun but cool temperatures is not lovely.

Delatron · 07/07/2024 13:33

I’m in the SE and it’s 16 today (as a high). If you’re in a micro climate somewhere that’s 23+ degrees then please share. Otherwise these temperatures are disappointing for summer, especially with the wind and rain thrown in.
