Oh god the armchair detectives are out in force.

Do you not have anything better to do with your Saturday night?

TwixOwl · 08/06/2024 22:19

I also think as he's not been found in the mountain that they need to assume he actually made it over, where are the exit routes and are there any cameras there?

Excellent summary posted there.
Tonight, the more I read, the less I can even make a best guess
Chances are he fell on the mountain path and is in the undergrowth
I hope there is a breakthrough.
His poor family and their agonising wait for news is heart wrenching

Why do people keep saying this.

He couldn't possibly know how rocky the terrain was until he started could he.

It probably started as a normal road. Then he took a wrong turn and ended up in a dangerous bit.

I remember reading a while ago about the two Dutch girls who went missing on a hike in Panama.

The locals said that the there is a very well worn easy to walk tourist trail. That it is on straight road.

However if you took one wrong step off the tourist trail you would get into very deep forest and very easy to get completely lost with no mobile signal

If you look at a street view 360 image for any of the pedi marina areas you can see the bleak grey peninsula he was heading for and it certainly didn't look hospitable.

Either way the missing body is most unusual. If he's up that mountain I doubt he is in view. I have to say I suspect he isn't up that mountain at all.

I'm saying if it was me and I didn't fancy the beach I wouldn't bother going at all.

What if you did fancy the beach, but then by lunchtime you'd had enough and wanted to head back to your hotel, and rather than wait hours for the boat you'd take a nice coastal walk back?

Seems that's all that's happened.
I don't think not having a phone is a big deal - as a woman I feel I have to have my phone for safety but in my experience men are less likely to feel this way. My DH rarely carries his.

5 litres is 5kg - a lot too carry unless you really think you'll need it. I've never carried more than 1 litre.

Do you hike in vast, barren areas with very high temperatures? A litre is fine in the UK and you're likely to be able to find water in hill streams, but in hot, arid countries, a decent amount of water is essential.

I was once working in Karatha, Western Australia and two of us had to drive about 250 km, typically 3 hours, to Port Hedland. We were told to take a case of water each, even though there is traffic, you could wait for hours, if broken down.

Even driving through Death Valley on the paved roads (which is a well trodden tourist route) you’re advised to stock up with cases of water - at least 4 litres per person per day, plus electrolytes. And that’s in case of breakdown, so without expending any energy.

TwixOwl · 08/06/2024 22:21

I agree with above, surely if he was up the mountain he would have been found ages ago. I think they need to assume he made it across towards the destination and look at cameras and exit routes.

TwixOwl · 08/06/2024 22:17

Has anyone thought that as he walked around he would have been able to see his family/friends across the bay?

Also could someone from that beach not be able to see if someone has walked up that mountain?

I thought that as well however looking close at the route from Pedi to Agia Marina, it is via a valley, so although St Nicholas (And his party) are over the other side of the bay, he'd not have been able to see them, although he would surely know he was going in the opposite direction to his accommodation.

We don't even know if he was heading home, or out on a jaunt. All this talk of illness and catching buses yesterday just isnt consistent with him then having an about turn and deciding to walk 4 miles in the opposite direction.

I would expect any cctv on exit routes the other side of the peninsula have already been checked, or else todays efforts would have been a wild goose chase. They seem as certain as they can be that he entered that peninsula and didnt make it out, leaving the options of he's hidden by limited grassland, under a boulder, in a cave or disappeared via fair means or foul on a boat.

Aquarius1234 · 08/06/2024 22:27

I'm shocked there's any cctv on a tiny remote greek island.

They aren’t amateurs, they will know this and be doing all of it.

WriterOfWrongs · 08/06/2024 22:29

As I suggested before earlier, I think it’s possible he never went up the mountain. I have no real idea where he would have gone instead. But it seems a reckless decision to go up the mountain, he’d know the risks of no/little water regardless of the terrain.

I can’t help wondering if there are less health-adverse choices he could have made instead, and if he did so.

Manhere2024 · 08/06/2024 22:30

I think it’s a red herring to say he’d left the beach because he was ill or tired. Today’s statement from his wife doesn’t mention that at all. What she said is:

”"It has been three days since Michael left the beach to go for a walk.“

westisbest1982 · 08/06/2024 22:30

Yes - we also don't know if he said to his group he was feeling unwell, as some people have said. The local journalist who reported that hasn't directly quoted his wife or his friends. What we do know is that his wife is on record saying "he went for a walk".

Its a popular tourist destination! Big ferries travel there daily as well as smaller speedboats carrying passengers. It is very popular with daytrippers with between 500 to 2000 visiting daily as well as those staying on the island itself.

elprup · 08/06/2024 22:34

If he was in the mountains, surely they would have spotted him by now? The terrain looks very open and exposed, with little to nothing by way of vegetation. He’d surely be easily visible to anyone searching from above in a helicopter, or to a drone.

Ive been saying this all day! The wife said he went out for a walk, no mention of heading home or being unwell. Of course, she will know exactly what he said, whether he intended meeting them back at the villa or coming back to the beach. He'd likely said how long he'd be as well and no doubt the emergency services have all of this info.

@ducktapezwhat a heartless callous post.

Agreed. This is the most disgusting post. No doubt the poster will see nothing wrong with it, but really, if they can read that back to themself and not see how completely self-involved it is, then that’s really shameful.

whyey · 08/06/2024 22:41

Why was he walking so quickly? On one of the CCTV clips you can see how quickly he’s walking compared to another man in the shot in what looks like a bar or cafe. He wasn’t sauntering home more rushing off somewhere 🤷‍♀️ in that heat his heart rate must have been through the roof fast walking like that.

Lots of big boulders - they'd have to look behind every one of them. And cracks and crevices between them too. It's not as easy as it sounds.

“Rushing off somewhere”???! It’s a small island.

Every statement the Mayor gives seems to hint at his frustration that not all the details are public. Subtleties may be lost in translation but I do sense that he’s hinting at something along the lines of Michael leaving because he felt ill or possibly the depression angle.

The mayor definitely has a negative tone. He's probably annoyed all eyes are on his sleepy little paradise and in a negative light. That Times article also has people arguing that what the mayor says isn't wholly accurate:

The mayor of Symi, Eleftherios Papakalodouka, described the area in the mountains as “very difficult to pass”. “There are two options — a road to Yialos or towards Agia Marina, but we don’t know which way he went,” he said. “There are only rocks, no shade, no trees. With 47 degrees heat you can’t survive.”

BUT Symi locals and a pair of British tourists, who have twice walked the route that Mosley is thought to have taken, have dismissed the idea that the terrain is treacherous. There are signs on the walk from Pedi beach to Agia Marina, and locals said they thought it would be hard to get lost. “It’s uneven under foot but it’s not treacherous,” said Jan Brownsort, 68.
