Give it a rest already or tell us what you think happened? Depressed people dont walk into mountains and disappear into thin air? What do you think he did?

What you want me to make up a story? Jeez

The terrain there looks so unforgiving. Not a scrap of shade.

It looks the sort of place where one would need around three litres of water a day- and the water in that heat would be like drinking bathwater.

Why did the Dr. leave his phone behind?

It sounds so concerning. Hope his mental health was ok before he set off for that gruelling trek.

🙏

I think that depressionarticle is fake. It's dated 2 days ago and funnily enough endorsing a highly controversial treatment. I wouldn't rely on it.

What sick bastard would do that?!

Very weird nothing has been found today.

I think you're right, I can't see any other reference to it. I'll ask mnhq to delete.

Yes I can see that it's difficult but with the number of volunteers they've got, and having a defined area to focus on, it's not an impossible task which is what I thought you meant by 'needle in a haystack'?

I went to an island near Symi a couple of years ago. While the terrain looks barren, it isn't really when you are on the ground. The other thing is that some of the actual roads are underdeveloped so it would be difficult to distinguish between a well used trail and one that isn't......

I don't think there is anything unusual about a middle aged man deciding to walk back to his house instead of spending a few hours on a beach waiting for a boat to return.

Unfortunately it looks like taking an unknown trail caused him to get lost and it has ended tragically.

I think it would be more usual for said man to not go to the beach in first place.

It's walking back to his house in the wrong direction on an approx 4 mile detour which will have taken him on some really rocky terrain. It simply doesnt add up as to why he'd do it.

There are other interviews where he refers to his depressive episodes. That particular article may be fake but I think his periods of depression are real.

Good point. As he was walking along the south side of the peninsula he’d have had to go right to the end and round it, or over the top, to find any shade. He’d have been in full sunshine on the Pedi side of the hills.

So what are you trying to say ( at this difficult time for his family )?

EdithBond · 08/06/2024 22:07

ducktapez · 08/06/2024 21:43

He clearly had little to none on him and theres no shops once on that rocky route. Did he make it to agia marina cos thats the only source of refreshment on that route. No reports of him getting there. Otherwise its him and a totally barren wasteland, unless he did something unspeakable to a goat.

A previous poster (can’t find it now) pointed out there are goats and sheep on the peninsula, which would need access to water. I’ve also read this in news reports. Quick search says feral goats require 2.5l to 4l a day, though they can take this via vegetation. So, maybe a slim hope (if he’s conscious but injured) he’s somehow followed their lead and managing to hydrate himself enough to survive.

Why do people keep saying this.

He couldn't possibly know how rocky the terrain was until he started could he.

It probably started as a normal road. Then he took a wrong turn and ended up in a dangerous bit.

I remember reading a while ago about the two Dutch girls who went missing on a hike in Panama.

The locals said that the there is a very well worn easy to walk tourist trail. That it is on straight road.

However if you took one wrong step off the tourist trail you would get into very deep forest and very easy to get completely lost with no mobile signal

One of the main things to do in the Greek Islands is travel from beach to beach by boat. It would be more unusual not to go.

5 litres is 5kg - a lot too carry unless you really think you'll need it. I've never carried more than 1 litre.

Do you hike in vast, barren areas with very high temperatures? A litre is fine in the UK and you're likely to be able to find water in hill streams, but in hot, arid countries, a decent amount of water is essential.

I was once working in Karatha, Western Australia and two of us had to drive about 250 km, typically 3 hours, to Port Hedland. We were told to take a case of water each, even though there is traffic, you could wait for hours, if broken down.

OneCanWonder · 08/06/2024 22:10

I'd read that they thought Dr M had taken the wrong path as he left Pedi. He's possibly gone inland/uphill instead of the path leading to Symi.
I'm hoping they find him but, given the time that's passed, think that becomes increasingly unlikely.
It's probable though he's had some kind of medical issue, fall or accident or succumbed to the heat.
It's a terribly sad situation though. Thinking of him and his family.

By now I would have listened to several hours of his podcasts driving long distance to work and back this week.
I haven't been able to, but his voice is so characterful and soothing, I can't get it out of my head and can't stop thinking about this.

It's so worrying and praying for a good outcome 🙏

I am exactly the same. I would normally have been listening to Just One Thing but I can't bring myself to listen to them. I listened to three episodes in a row on Tuesday, he has such a nice voice.

GreatOcean · 08/06/2024 22:16

Heat exhaustion is no joke and very difficult to summon energy to continue once you're unwell.

It does seem as though he's taken a wrong turn and gotten lost, dehydration can cause confusion too so I wonder if they'll find him somewhere much further inland.

Whatever has happened, I hope he's not suffering.

I'm saying if it was me and I didn't fancy the beach I wouldn't bother going at all.

TwixOwl · 08/06/2024 22:17

Has anyone thought that as he walked around he would have been able to see his family/friends across the bay?

Also could someone from that beach not be able to see if someone has walked up that mountain?
