Which clinic? The population of Symi is only 2,500. If they have a clinic at all, how would he have got there without any taxi driver, bus driver or anyone else noticing? If for some reason he got a ferry to Rhodes someone would have noticed him. Most importantly, what kind of clinic would admit someone and not notify the police or his family?

I think it's an unlikely scenario, but I don't think the clinic would tell anyone without his consent. I actually did have this with DS, he was safe, but missing (as an adult) and those caring for him encouraged him to contact us, but couldn't actually contact us themselves, unless he asked them to.

I guess as being the mayor of Symi is not like being the mayor of London. He’s just a normal dude, a local, not media trained. Does some basic duties.

He's an esteemed local who is not wanting any negativity towards the island that relies on tourism. I'm 99.9% certain there is no foul play involved..this case has given a mixture of publicity though, this thread proves it

sarahc336 · 08/06/2024 19:16

This has been answered many times, it's a mobile phone recording if the cctv footage just to get it shared easier 😁

Can anyone explain something to me? In the video they have of CCTV, why does the camera follow him?

Top of this article but no doubt elsewhere too if you don’t want to click on a Guardian link:

Isn’t some cctv movement sensitive?

my husband was wondering that too - scrap that just saw above answers

@WitchyWay spot on. My super fit and active 70 yo GP uncle, if faced with sitting on a beach for another 3 hours before the water taxi came back, would absolutely go for a wander and then think nothing of hiking up an unfamiliar hill if the bus looked boring, too long a wait etc. he also wouldn’t have his phone with him as it’s not so ingrained in him to have it with him at all times. None of this is odd to me, having family members who would absolutely do everything MM did on that afternoon.

RoseAndRose · 08/06/2024 19:20

WitchyWay · 08/06/2024 19:14

I may be wrong, but he looks like a very fit and able man who has probably spent much of his life pursuing sports. I have a few GP friends and they all cycle long distance, take adventurous holidays and general don't like to be idle. I can well imagine someone like that not thinking twice of taking a mountain track, especially if someone tells them it's a matter of an hour. Tempting for someone who feels physically fit.

He's clearly a very intelligent individual, I'm sure he risk assessed, perhaps seeing the traffic as a higher risk that the mountain track. Or perhaps thought that was boring and wanted an adventurous walk back home.

Sadly, I suspect he won't be found alive. I can't imagine (although may of course be wrong) that he had much food or water with him, certainly not enough to stay alive over 3 days. I think it's highly likely this is now a recovery operation.

I really feel for his family, the unknown must be torturous and all the what ifs. My thoughts are with them all and every other family who are waiting for a loved one to return or be found.

Unfortunately, I think I agree with you. Unless he has found a water source, it is extremely unlikely he would survive beyond 3 days. I think the theoretical survival time is significantly shortened in hot weather.

I feel for his wife, who will definitely know that from her medical training.

ducktapez · 08/06/2024 19:22

All these people saying people they know would wander off in the heat, fair enough but have you listened to the many locals nearby who say that the path he allegedly took is such tricky terrain that most locals dont use it, its barely a path at all. It simply isnt somewhere you would go for a walk. Maybe equipped as a hiker with the kit but a man alone at 67 in his trainers and a big umbrella, it just doesnt ring true.

Justleaveitblankthen · 08/06/2024 19:24

By now I would have listened to several hours of his podcasts driving long distance to work and back this week.
I haven't been able to, but his voice is so characterful and soothing, I can't get it out of my head and can't stop thinking about this.

It's so worrying and praying for a good outcome 🙏

This is why I think it’s possible that he didn’t take that path at all. AFAIK they don’t have evidence that he did, only that he was heading in that direction.

Just on the Dr comment. I too have friends who are Drs and in terms of unhealthy, risk-taking habits – drinking, recreational drug use, etc – they are some of the worst I know. Although don’t know how much of that relates to the stress of the job and perhaps also being confronted with mortality more often than most of us.

But in relation to risk assessment – banishing paddling pools, assessing symptoms – they are also usually pretty on it. Maybe it’s just easier to have a blind spot when it’s yourself?

In my own case, I can be a bit of a hypochondriac when it comes to weird or random symptoms. Yet I’m also pretty gung ho / perhaps a bit overconfident when it comes to physical exertion.

I’ve cycled 50 km on holiday by myself in baking midday heat and then climbed up paths I’m not familiar with, with a bike, to get a good view of an island and have a glass of wine and a bite to eat in the sun before cycling back. I’ve not told anyone my plans and been holidaying alone, so not expected back at a certain time.

I think if you’ve generally been fine and feel confident physically it’s easy to underestimate your own vulnerability to the elements.

I don’t think we should go through life being scared of everything, but all of this has certainly made me reassess my relationship with avoidable risk.

Still hoping there might be a positive outcome. Very sad and worrying.

Sounds idyllic tbh!

Praying for Dr Mosley and his family today.

Me too

Looks like to come back into Pedi from the road you would need to walk back past the marina CCTV.

But presumably those locals know the path and that it is tricky where as tourist who has been told take the first path# on the left may well do that assuming it is easier than it looks (e.g. lots of rough terrain has fairly easy paths that follow the natural valleys in the land).

#The person giving directions has forgotten/discounted the first barely there path because they have discounted it.

headstone · 08/06/2024 19:34

I wonder if they have checked the water around the harbour. Nobody else there at the time MM walked past.

So are we to assume he never came back to Pedi as he wasn't sighted on CCTV? I hope we can assume all these cameras have been checked to make sure he never returned?!

Doesn't mean to say that it's obviously difficult at the start.

Being on holiday is liberating, we often step outside comfort zones, or choose to be less careful or cautious then we are at home, its part of unwinding and being somewhere new.

I can easily see how he thought he'd walk on, even just to check a view or out of boredom, without giving it too much thought. And it's really easy to become lost and lose the path.

I got lost the path on a well-trodden local walk last week. Turned around to go home and 2 minutes later realised I wasn't where I should be. This was on clearly defined, wide paths and I knew which direction to head in to pick up the familiar route again. Nor was I disorientated from heat & dehydration.

The landscape they're searching in is impossible - it must be like looking for a needle in a haystack. So easy to set off on a lesser-used path and then before long realise you've lost it, in all directions. Without clear landmarks, where all rocks look the same and in blazing light.

Nothing sinister happened here. He got lost in an unforgiving landscape, in brutal heat. A moment's lack of care is probably all it took.

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 08/06/2024 19:39

@ducktapez @headstone of course they have. That's how the later cctv sighting came to light. They've had search & rescue out at sea, along the coastline and everyone with a boat is also on alert and looking for him in the water.

ducktapez · 08/06/2024 19:41

@KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop

Im inclined to disagree about the needle in a haystack. This isnt a rainforest or the north york moors. It's barren rock everywhere. You'd think a man dressed in blue with a purple umbrella collapsed somewhere would stick out like a sore thumb to a helicopter or drone. Especially given there are certain paths/routes he's unlikely to have deviated from.

headstone · 08/06/2024 19:41

I suppose finding someone in the water a day later would be really difficult.

Yeah the water is a different matter. Could he have gone in just moments after the cctv footage at pedi marina? Once past there, the mountain path isn't next to the waters edge so that seems unlikely plus no news reports of divers on that side of the bay today so they mustnt suspect that.

I agree with everything you said except the 'needle in a haystack' point, I really don't think that's the case, the search parameters have become more and more precise. And I still think there's a chance he could be alive.

I would think you’d have to cut back behind the buildings to on the north side of the marina road to not be caught on the camera again, assuming it’s working reliably.

WriterOfWrongs · 08/06/2024 19:48

We don’t know yet. Yes the scenario you outline is clearly the most probable scenario, but that doesn’t make it factually accurate. The police will no doubt be considering all possibilities, including “sinister” ones, however unlikely.
