All these people saying people they know would wander off in the heat, fair enough but have you listened to the many locals nearby who say that the path he allegedly took is such tricky terrain that most locals dont use it, its barely a path at all. It simply isnt somewhere you would go for a walk. Maybe equipped as a hiker with the kit but a man alone at 67 in his trainers and a big umbrella, it just doesnt ring true.

The locals know the parh isnt suitable and can't imagine choosing to walk that way, MM presumably does not have that local knowledge and so isn't at all surprising that he might choose to do so

What doesn't ring true about it? Unless you're suggesting that he took a poll of passers by and then decided to ignore them and plough on anyway it's obvious that someone might take what appears to be walkable path and then find themselves in trouble

I agree with everything you said except the 'needle in a haystack' point, I really don't think that's the case, the search parameters have become more and more precise. And I still think there's a chance he could be alive.

Do you? That’s heartening. How are your thoughts running? I’ve been scanning this thread for someone hopeful but most seem resigned to the worst.

He seems a lovely man and his family must be suffering g terribly. It would he lovely if he were found.

WTF is actually wrong with everyone?! This thread is a weird social experiment at this point. I don't think we should create a new thread when this one fills up. In a crisis, would you be sniping at each other like this?

Exactly what I think. People are so bloody obcessed with being ‘clever’ . If people want to argue then just go away and start another thread .
Cannot imagine how awful this last three days have been for Michael family. Sending them my thoughts and hope he is found asap.

@ducktapez barren rock but not a blank landscape. Have you seen the pictures of where they're searching? It's landscape which is deceptively hard to search visually.

Its also deep, the rocks & grasses coming up to adult knees, so unless he's stood up, he's likely to be hidden from view. People keep mentioning the purple umbrella as if it'll be sticking out like a sore thumb - if he fell, it could be closed, bent, broken or underneath him.

Trust me, that landscape looks bare at first glance but it's much harder to spot things in than you think - from the air as well as the ground. They'll likely need to be on top of him to see him clearly.

Dogs can only work for very short periods of time - one hour, which presumably includes the time it to get there & back from the search area. Heat-seeking technology is probably hindered by the heat and rocks reflecting it back.

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 08/06/2024 19:51

@VinnieVanDog the needle in the haystack comment is because the landscape is hard to search, even in a small area.

In the UK, we're used to quite tame, green landscapes and even then its surprisingly difficult to search for someone, as other searches in recent memory have proven.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 08/06/2024 19:52

Got on a boat to another island ? Can’t imagine why he would do that unless disorientated , confused maybe. And why no one has come forward to say yes, he got on my boat.

She may have been taking a panoramic photo, or this may be clipped from a video.

Can only be the obvious reason. Am sure absolutely nothing more sinister than that .Definitely hope that people are not jumping to silly conclusions 🙄

I would think you’d have to cut back behind the buildings to on the north side of the marina road to not be caught on the camera again, assuming it’s working reliably.

I dont think you can get behind those houses. Seems to be one way only and so if he's spotted heading east on several cctv cameras but none of them caught him going back then thats as conclusive as you can get that he never returned on foot to Pedi. There's still a possibility he got on a boat and went........somewhere.

It would. I was really hoping he’d be found today

Yes I really do, perhaps because I'm really interested in accounts of survival and some of them are so amazing and improbable. MM is a fit resourceful man and people tend to underestimate the resilience of the human body.

The need to get in touch with this fella if they havent already. He's the Ray Mears of Symi. Knows every inch of it

https://barrysramblings.com/2012/09/29/symi-getting-it-wrong/

He has replied in the blog page that he is in touch with the search party and advising

Great find

Yes I can see that it's difficult but with the number of volunteers they've got, and having a defined area to focus on, it's not an impossible task which is what I thought you meant by 'needle in a haystack'?

bluecomputerscreen · 08/06/2024 19:56

in 2018 a Claire Nelson got lost in a national park in california in similar weather and terrain.
she took a wrong turn and got injured badly so was stuck out of sight of the main path. she was found after 4 days.

I'm hoping for the best.

Ray Mears used to include amazing stories of survival in his tv shows. Let's keep hoping.

Someone commented on his wife's most recent insta photo that they saw a shock of blue colour on mountains near the area. People have told them to just form the police

It is fascinating that people are treating this like a live minute by minute detective show.
People have a strange appetite for real time big brother type drama.
Only this is real life!

ducktapez · 08/06/2024 20:02

Go to Google earth, and drop the street view in one of those 360 degree photos at agia marina. Its rocky, a bit of grass but not much, certainly not enough to conceal a body. He could have fallen down a crack/crevasse though but it's unlikely. Why would he venture off the beaten track. He's not some selfie taking instagrammer and didnt have a phone anyway.

But the defined area could ultimately be miles. And they dint know if he made it to the sea, or to caves. If it wasn’t a needle in a haystack they’d have found him by now.

There was a man who disappeared in 2012 during a mountain marathon. The search for him had a defined area. It's quite scary how easily people can go missing in places you'd think they would found quite quickly.

The Last Man Up

Like a lot of things in Alaska, the annual Mount Marathon Race in Seward is famously brutal, even dangerous. Which is precisely why Michael LeMaitre ran it—the last day he was seen alive.

I think it's just because it has been constantly on the News. It will drop off headlines soon and sadly that will be that.

I loathe comments that people are somehow 'ghoulish' for having an interest. We've all got relatives, we've all been on holiday it isn't a stretch to put yourselves in their shoes and wonder at the decisions made and why.

@KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop

Im inclined to disagree about the needle in a haystack. This isnt a rainforest or the north york moors. It's barren rock everywhere. You'd think a man dressed in blue with a purple umbrella collapsed somewhere would stick out like a sore thumb to a helicopter or drone. Especially given there are certain paths/routes he's unlikely to have deviated from.

You're right, however it is still a very difficult search area with treacherous conditions and the current intense heat hampers conditions further.

I think people seem to be thrown by the 'small island' narrative.

To compare, the NY Moors covers approximately 554 square miles. Symi has a land mass of around 22.4 square miles. Whilst the difference is vast, it is still a huge area to search.

With the moors murders for exmple, it's easy to see why there were some people that have not and may never possibly be recovered (even though they have been searched over decades). That doesn't mean to say that searching 22.4 square miles of difficult terrain equals finding someone within 3 or 4 days easy by comparison.

I think because we have fast news, Internet 24/7 etc, we have all become expectant of instant results. Thousands of people have disappeared around the world in recent years. Many have never been found.

That said, with modern day technology (and the CCTV sightings) I'd hope that he would be found very soon, as it does rather pinpoint him to a certain area now. Hopefully he will be found in the next couple of days.

It's such an awful situation. Yes, people speculate. I think, more than anything, it does make us think, though. We all take risks, we are all just one possible wrong turn away from tragedy. We are all only human.

Typo

No most people don't bring heavy hiking trainers on a holiday that is more social with friends.
Crazy. 40 degrees.

HebburnPokemon · 08/06/2024 20:08

Question: they’re now checking the cave system, but why would he be in there?

Becuase he could have sheltered from the heat there

PadstowGirl · 08/06/2024 20:09

Maybe he went into a cave for shelter and then went in deeper for water?
