You're right, however it is still a very difficult search area with treacherous conditions and the current intense heat hampers conditions further.
I think people seem to be thrown by the 'small island' narrative.
To compare, the NY Moors covers approximately 554 square miles. Symi has a land mass of around 22.4 square miles. Whilst the difference is vast, it is still a huge area to search.
With the moors murders for exmple, it's easy to see why there were some people that have not and may never possibly be recovered (even though they have been searched over decades). That doesn't mean to say that searching 22.4 square miles of difficult terrain equals finding someone within 3 or 4 days easy by comparison.
I think because we have fast news, Internet 24/7 etc, we have all become expectant of instant results. Thousands of people have disappeared around the world in recent years. Many have never been found.
That said, with modern day technology (and the CCTV sightings) I'd hope that he would be found very soon, as it does rather pinpoint him to a certain area now. Hopefully he will be found in the next couple of days.
It's such an awful situation. Yes, people speculate. I think, more than anything, it does make us think, though. We all take risks, we are all just one possible wrong turn away from tragedy. We are all only human.
