Well said, absolutely awful behaviour from some posters. Speculation about the family, you should be ashamed.

It's not a "story" it's a real life situation where people are going through hell.

Ah go away. That's shite

belovedhoneybee · 08/06/2024 16:50

I can’t find the poster who originally posted the link to Barry’s Ramblings, but Barry sounds pretty well informed if he knows the search has moved on from the rocky outcrop caves. Wonder if he is based on Symi…

Most threads on MN are anonymous.

This is a thread about identified, real people.

Of course my concerns extend beyond this specific series of threads. I said stated that expressly. I think posters speculating about real life events like this simply don't want accept that their posting choices may be part of a bigger problem.

So why are you so engrossed?. What could Mnetters possibly add, that's not on news sites, other than speculation?

OK noted. I don't agree. Maybe don't participate if you feel that way?

I personally think it's heartwarming, in a very bittersweet way, to see how many people care and are thinking of Michael Mosley on their Saturday afternoons.

I hope he's found alive soon. I hate that another day is drawing to a close with no news for his family.

ducktapez · 08/06/2024 16:51

Someone posted a good link to a page about the caves then deleted it. Strange.

CorylusAgain · 08/06/2024 16:33

I'm not policing I'm asking you why you posted.

I believe that mindless speculation on social media about other people's lives and actions is damaging. It's a practice that values opinion over fact and the drip down to daily life is damaging our children and teens daily.

The comments are here for ever. People devastated by tragedy do find them. Maybe not today but as I said, the comments typed without a seconds thought remain permanently.

Yep – someone I know died last year climbing in Wales. It was a real shock and v sad. Reading a local Welsh newspaper to understand more about what happened, there were some really tasteless comments and some others actually criticising the deceased for being a climber in their 50s (and so on).

Was just stunned that people could be so crass and hadn’t considered that friends and relatives might be reading. It wasn’t just an anonymous person, it was a real person with friends and family who were left reeling by what happened.

Would those same people put a name to their comment or agree to have them passed on to the family? Probably not. They weren’t invested at all, it was just something to pass the time for a moment.

Hopefully he's had a mild medical episode and is currently being cared for by a lovely Greek Yia Yia who is stuffing him full of spanakopita, completely oblivious to the frantic search party going on outside (happened to me in Santorini).

I posted about this in the second thread wondering if it was a mobile recording of a CCTV screen and a few posters affirmed that this was the case - it is often the quickest and most efficient way to share a CCTV recording ☺️

Several people have asked the same question, obviously not having read much of the thread. It is a sensible suggestion. But the continual repetition of the same question is tiresome.

I'm obviously getting tetchy too!

People please stop being wankers.

Every bloody time I check on this thread I'm scrolling through shite.

Agree

The way he is walking so fast worries me, especially someone not feeling well. It’s reminds me of cctv images of Sally Allan who went missing and was found in a river.

That’s exactly what it reminded me of. He seems fine on the still pics browsing in the cafe/shop but on the videos he seems to be striding with a mission. Hopefully he hasn’t had a medical episode.

For 3 days? Unless he'd lost his mind I think he might have thought to call his wife by now.

westisbest1982 · 08/06/2024 16:57

Surely if you’re scrolling through “shite” you’d just stop scrolling, unless you enjoy scrolling through “shite”? The “shite” is just going to continue.

It is unusual to head off for a mountain hike in 40 degrees without water or a map. It just is. Remember the summer before last when we had a couple of days of 40 degrees and we were basically told to stay indoors with the curtains closed?!

I agree a slow short stroll to the nearby town, where he could get a drink 20 mins later, when he got bored of the beach, makes sense. The rest doesn't.

I don't think he was intending to do a "mountain hike". I think he either went up there to look at the views or thought he could get back to the holiday house that way. I think he got in to trouble when up there - it doesn't mean he was planning an epic walk. Heat stroke can come on very quickly. He'd probably been feeling fine under the shade of his umbrella up until that point. Maybe the exertion of climbing that hill in the heat cause him to have a heart attack or heat stroke.
I know plenty of hikers who I often think take risks. My friend (similar age to Michael Mosley) decided to do a 20 mile hike in the Lake District in the winter on her own. It took much longer than she expected and she was hiking in the dark, in a blizzard! Her phone died. It was a really dangerous situation.
I think MM really shouldn't have gone up there. He may have been there very briefly before he tried to come down again but he became ill. The mystery is that they haven't found him.

belovedhoneybee · 08/06/2024 16:53

Ah was that the Barry’s Ramblings page?

Yeah I said ages ago they need Barry on the case as lead consultant, just like they enlisted Ray Mears to find Raoul Moat. That Barry fella whoever he is has written page after page about Symis various terrain.

MyQuaintDog · 08/06/2024 16:58

I hope they find him soon.

You have made my point perfectly.

MNers have nothing to add. Their speculation doesn't help the search.

Clarification of factual information can help people understand what's happening, but throwing out comments about MM's state of mind or the actions of his wife does nothing but leave the potential to add to the pain.

Albergo · 08/06/2024 16:59

Carly944 · 08/06/2024 16:45

And why are you here then?

Not a very original MN comment.

Unlike you, I am not here to salivate over drama. I am a MN member and I appreciate following this in the English language. Most posters aren't snidey or sensationalist @Carly944

I don’t know if he’d be able to recite her number off by heart, do you? I can’t remember the last time I called anyone who wasn’t a phone contact.

Apparently he does often walk quickly. He has discussed it on a few of his podcast episodes, walking fast enough to get his heart rate up. Perhaps if he thought he would either get back to the house and limit his time in the heat, or quickly walk to higher ground for a bit before going back to for a later bus that could explain it.

He was sensible enough to be carrying an umbrella for shade, so hopefully he also had water with him.

DwarfBeans · 08/06/2024 17:01

A few posters have said they think it's concerning he is walking fast in the cctv footage. Do we know the time of that and what direction he was walking in? Could he have been walking to the bus and walking fast not to miss it?

Keep up at the back. It was 2pm ish and he was marching to the end of the civilised area. The complete opposite direction to any buses.

No the second cctv is along the marina (dead end) but which leads to the mountain path.
But yes if he’s into fitness the fast walking does make sense I suppose.
