Again, did he do this 20 mile walk on the first morning of holidays after being taken to the beach by a group of friends with whom you were staying, in 40 degree heat and with no phone? No. That's not completely un-worrying behaviour.

No, but he would probably decide he'd had his fill of sitting on a beach and want leave after not much time (that's why he doesn't do beach holidays). It's not sinister to be bored shitless after hours on a beach and prefer to be active.

We have no idea what has happened to MM but speculating that he must be either physically or mentally unwell isn't helpful. Especially as you have formed this opinion by second guessing what he did rather than knowing he has intentionally head along X path or to Y destination. It just as likely that he has tried to head back to the apartment taken a route that was much more challenging than he anticipated and has got into difficulty.

My vain hope is that he is actually in their villa hiding under the bed, or somewhere safe close by. Not flippant either. We don't know if they have searched around their accommodation yet.

Yes I'm sure he's playing hide and seek.

That answers it.

The narrative certainly has changed from 'A child couldn't even get lost around here' to 'He could be in multiple dangerous scenarios'.

Well, whatever the truth of it, my heart is with his family. This must be gut wrenching.

Yes, and the search area changed from a regularly accessed, flattened, widened 20 minute path, to hours worth of unsheltered mountainous terrain.

Eh what the fuck? You make no sense whatsoever.

Another poster posted the news update about the abyss.

I replied to it.

So why were you nasty to me?

I wasn't the first person to say it.

I simply replied to the news update that someone else posted.

Jesus you are beyond weird

I just don't think a happy, healthy person goes out with their friends, with whom they are staying, on their very first morning of holiday and then goes off alone (home or for a walk). So either he's not happy or he's not healthy. I think the minute he left he group, something had gone wrong. If he's not happy, he could well have gone in any direction and (devastatingly) ended his life in the sea. If he's not well, he could also have gone in any direction either through panic, delirium or in an attempt to get help. His wife will probably have told them a lot more than we can know about his state of mind.

I just don’t agree with this at all. I think plenty of happy healthy people on their first morning would go for a walk and explore their new surroundings.

Trainday · 08/06/2024 16:14

I don't think him not having his phone with him is odd, wouldn't take mine on a trip to the beach, take as little as possible and nothing I'd worry about losing, but then deciding to go on a mountain walk without it or any other navigational tool, or stopping to get a drink, in the heat of the day is odd.

The walk back to the town, which he did successfully fine, the rest is not, I don't think, something an intelligent, experienced person thinking rationally would do.

Bettylou82 · 08/06/2024 16:14

Anyone else notice that the 'CCTV' footage of him walking at Pedi marina appears to be a handheld video? Why does the camera follow him? Why does it zoom in on him? CCTV is controlled and doesn't target people like this unless a person is of interest...Seems weird

It's just such a mystery. I can't understand why he hasn't been found yet and they clearly haven't been able to find him overground if they're now searching caves and tunnels.

It is just very strange, something dangerous has clearly happened to him but you'd think if it were a heart attack/collapsed because of the heat he'd have been spotted by now. No sign of the umbrella either.

Are the caves near where he was walking? I can understand seeking shelter out of the sun down there if he suddenly realised he was in difficulty and lost.

Yeah especially if you are somewhere new. And it's a change of scene.

People enjoy going for a walk

I’m not sure we know the island is new to him. My guess is that he’s been there before, as his friends have a home there.

westisbest1982 · 08/06/2024 16:03

I agree, it’s not exactly common behaviour for the first day on your holiday with your partner and close friends. Perhaps there were tensions in the group or with MM and his wife.

This is so unacceptable. There is nothing remotely odd about your first day on holiday going off for a walk and exploring. Please stop with this heinous speculation.

"Hiding under the bed" was a euphemism for being at the villa somewhere all the time or nearby to it. I don't believe it has been checked yet, which is usually the first place to look AFAIK.

Well, he obviously isn't hiding under the bed. 🙄 But why do you believe the villa hasn't been checked yet? What on earth has caused you to draw that odd conclusion?

I said first morning, not it was new to him. It was the first day of his holiday, why should he not go off for a walk and exploring, doesn’t matter if he’s been there before, it’s completely normal behaviour.

I thought the report was 7:30? In any case, he'd set off for a 30 min walk at 1:30 and was reported missing at 6 or 7:30.

Anyway, I think the authorities will have a good idea of what happened. We'll probably never know the full story.

Where did you get the 30 minutes from? His wife is quoted as saying

It has been three days since Michael left the beach to go for a walk. The longest and most unbearable days for myself and my children.

This is a direct quote from the BBC and The Guardian - no mention of 30 minutes, also no mention that he was unwell as quoted by other posters.

Its presumably a mobile phone recording of cctv

Yes, and the search area changed from a regularly accessed, flattened, widened 20 minute path, to hours worth of unsheltered mountainous terrain.

Yes, it did.

Initially the search was along the wide, frequently walked path from the beach to Pedi (when the beach was his last known location)

Then, after his presence in Pedi was confirmed, it switched from there to the trails between Pedi and Simi. They seem to have discounted the road (maybe based on last CCTV) and are looking at the peninsular, which is rocky with steep areas and very little shade. And possibly tunnels (crevasses?)

(I can't make sense of mention of the island though - it doesn't look as if you can get there other than by boat. And if he'd caught another water taxi, then surely the boatman would have come forward)

Literally every single thing on all three of these threads is speculation, as people try to understand what can have happened in a situation where everyone knows basically nothing. All we know for sure is where he was at two or three pinpointed moments in time on CCTV. A lot of locals have also said it's not exactly usual to stroll about in that kind of heat. People don't tend to go 'exploring' in hot weather without a map or phone.

dicokno · 08/06/2024 16:19

Don't know why people think it's weird behaviour to leave the group and go off on his own. Not everyone is glued to their group for the entire holiday, or even the first couple of days until everyone starts pissing you off.
First of all it was reported that he'd said he was going back to the villa because he felt ill - not weird behaviour, maybe it was a bit too hot for him, dodgy tummy, whatever - he thinks the walk back will do him good and then he can have a lie down - off he goes (he's then seen somewhere else on CCTV rather than the route he should have been on to get back to the villa).
Then it was reported that his wife said he was going for a walk - again, not weird behaviour, plenty of people don't want to lie around on a beach all day and maybe he just fancied getting a bit of exercise. Not weird behaviour.

It is unusual to head off for a mountain hike in 40 degrees without water or a map. It just is. Remember the summer before last when we had a couple of days of 40 degrees and we were basically told to stay indoors with the curtains closed?!

I agree a slow short stroll to the nearby town, where he could get a drink 20 mins later, when he got bored of the beach, makes sense. The rest doesn't.
