Just that really. Will he be found?

l’m 60.

My phone is glued to my hand. So is DH’s. We never leave them behind. He’s 65.

Yes but everyone's different. I know people from all generations who aren't that interested in their phones and don't take them everywhere. Even a phone addict like me (and my daughter!) occasionally forgets my phone, especially on holiday when there's a lot going on.

This story is provoking some weird threads.

The OP starts, Will he be found? How the hell is anyone supposed to know that, I wonder?

And the other thread is already planning his funeral.

It's the stampede to share bad news. It doesn't matter what burble comprises the OP & title, as long as they are first to post.

How do you leave the island? Last reported sightings at a bus stop and the emergency services are saying that if he was still on the island they would have found him by now. Hoping he's done a flit and will be found safe and well somewhere else.

I don’t know how they can possibly be saying he’d have been found by now if he were on the island?

Although very differentl, it reminds me of the case of the woman who went missing hiking alone in the Pyrenees - her remains were not discovered for about 9 months and I remember reading an interview with her partner than was convinced she had been kidnapped because the area had been searched so extensively. In the end her remains were found beneath the path that she had been believed to have been walking on, suggesting it was simply a case of her having fallen and her body not having been found despite extensive searches. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Esther_Dingley

I'm well below 60 and wouldn't take my.phone to the beach in Greece. I will take a book, sunglasses, a little money for a drink, a towel and sun lotion. Nothing more.

I hope he's ok.

quizzys · 06/06/2024 20:36

I know it's speculation however given the mystery as to the man's whereabouts on a tiny island, I wonder if he is down a well or in a crevice somewhere? If he has fallen into the sea, I'd say he will be found somehow. If he left the island, the boatmen/women would know.

He could just turn up of course, which is the very best scenario obviously. Here's hoping for the best.

Allthehorsesintheworld · 06/06/2024 20:36

@4fingerKitKat Something really loud like a rape alarm, just in case you’re stuck somewhere. And really decent footwear suitable for the terrain of course.
From memory ( it’s 20 years ago) the people who went missing simply got lost, decided to climb stone riddled rocks in sandals and fell between rocks and at least one woman went walking in flip flops and couldn’t carry on walking. Person I remember found dead had gone out shooting rabbits or birds, hadn’t broken his shotgun ( rifle? not sure of correct name) and tripped into a ditch. Gun went off.
And thousands of people walked and hiked ( including us) perfectly safely.

headstone · 06/06/2024 20:39

His poor family, it’s not looking good is it.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/06/2024 20:40

I thought he’d left his phone on the beach though.

Not looking good. Sad news.

Sunnyside4 · 06/06/2024 20:44

So if it's true that witnesses saw him in Pedi, doesn't sound like he's had an accident/been taken ill on the way back to the village, which I'd have thought was the obvious scenario. So hope he's found well for him and his family.

Sadly I suspect an accident tlike that is going to the the outcome, it's not uncommon for people not to be found for a while when going missing near water or overgrown areas

MaxandMeg · 06/06/2024 20:50

Marinel · 06/06/2024 15:58

It doesn't sound good if they've been searching for a while and haven't found him. But fingers crossed.

I am surprised he didn't take his phone with him. I go out walking every day and always take my phone, that's a big part of what a mobile phone is for, to be able to contact someone in an emergency. For a peaceful walk with no pings, just turn it off.

Also so you have 'What Three Words' which is what Mountain Rescue will ask you to upload if you have an accident.

Parrotseatthemall · 06/06/2024 21:00

It doesn't sound good to me. They are having a heatwave at the moment a stumble or a faint straight into the sea sounds quite likely...and explains the disappearance. I hope I'm wrong but I very much doubt foul play

Howcanichange · 06/06/2024 21:01

I can't stop thinking about this. I have so many of his books and love him on the telly. Its incredibly sad, his poor family.

Same. I keep looking on the news and on here to see if he’s been found.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 06/06/2024 21:02

Oaktree55 · 06/06/2024 19:55

Reading up on him he’s had heart issues and gave an interview saying no male in his family has ever lived past 72. I’d imagine the heat triggered a heart problem and he’s sadly fallen as a result.

But surely if he was worried about his heart he’s got more than enough money and medical knowledge to get it looked at/seen to. Although I know it’s not as straightforward as it sounds.

My thread was NOT started to share bad news. I just posted as others do here as I’d seen it in the media and thought this would be a post about a nice man. I’m certainly not a grief hound poster and i take exception at someone thinking I am.

Your post alerted me to the news so I for one am glad you posted.

Although I can't stop thinking about him either.

His wife is a doctor. If he did have a medical episode and had stayed on the beach he would have been in the best possible hands.

I just hope for her sake there is news very quickly, whichever way it goes.

Some people clearly have nothing better to do with their lives than needlessly give you a hard time, OP. I also started a thread (which got immediately shot down by another bizarrely confrontational poster!) as I genuinely was shocked by the news and hadn’t seen it elsewhere. He is quite popular on MN, especially with the 5:2 diet and I just wanted others to know about the situation.

It's just a question. Will he? Who knows? Let's hope so for the sake of his family but many people go missing and, sadly, aren't always found.
Let's hope this isn't one of those scenarios.

Howbizarre22 · 06/06/2024 21:20

This incredible man has been a huge inspiration- my diet guru the last few years. I’m so upset by this news, I’m praying he is found like everyone else. Seems such a lovely warm person too 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
