Just that really. Will he be found?

What about one of those flares that set off coloured smoke? At least you would be noticed by someone hopefully. Or some sort of GPS thing?

You wouldn’t be able to take a flare on a plane I wouldn’t imagine!

Realistically I would be exceptionally unlucky to fall off the path and not be able to alert anyone, it’s not like I am going anywhere particularly remote.

More practically though it’s a reminder I need to share details of my route and accommodation with my DH as at the moment he knows nothing other than the country I am going to!

Abelard40 · 06/06/2024 18:52

I bought his book on sleep recently and found it really helpful and non judgemental. His fasting advice I have less success with but that’s very much my issue!

If walking inland in that heat seems likely he may have become disorientated / fainted.. I may be being naive but I’m quietly optimistic for him.

Summeratlast24 · 06/06/2024 18:52

Yes I would have thought that a sensible man like him would be prepared if he was going to go on a long walk in the middle of the day in 40 degrees eg hat, water, phone etc.

Also at the age of nearly 70, even if he is relatively fit, that would be a risk. I have two family members a lot younger who went out for a walk one day and did not return (brain haemorrhage and heart attack.)

From the reports however, I did not get that he was actively hiking in the midday sun, more that he was walking back from the beach.

Why ask the question if it's not meant to be answered?

I didn’t mean for it to be answered or not. It was just an off the cuff question and something I didn’t really give too much thought to at the time. Obviously according to some here I should’ve thought far more deeply about it I wouldn’t have.

The BBC says 40 and locals are calling it a hike.

"Local residents have said they are trying to understand why someone would leave the beach on foot and go on a hike - without their phone to navigate - in such challenging conditions, rather than taking the boat back."

Mad dogs and Englishmen, as ever.

I think it's odd to call it a "hike", I saw it described as a 25 minute/1 kilometre walk from the St Nicholas beach to where they are staying, in Pedi. I also find it quite odd that the alarm was only raised 6 hours after he left the beach, but maybe I'm misunderstanding what when on.

greatvisuals · 06/06/2024 18:56

I just read he went for the walk yesterday.
Apparently a walk to the centre of the island - so a good few miles (not just walking home from the beach as a PP said).

I think if I was going on a walk alone, in a different country I would at least take phone or give someone my plans.

I agree, I don't think it's odd he didn't have his phone with him when he decided to go for a walk from the beach, I don't take my phone to the beach.

I do think it was odd to set off on a strenuous walk/hike in the heat of the day. Even if it was short, it was rough "hiking" terrain, not a stroll back to the village.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 06/06/2024 19:04

Maybe he didn't realise how rough the terrain was, as if he went back early before the boat came because he was feeling tired, as this article says, https://www.thetimes.com/uk/media/article/dr-michael-mosley-missing-greece-island-symi-hh66h2t5x, he probably wouldn't have wanted to take a challenging route like that in the circumstances.

I find it really odd that anyone thinks they know someone as they are in the public eye to be fair. I genuinely hope he is found, and do feel the time it’s taking in such a small space is a real concern, but I don’t feel I know him, I think that’s a step too far.

Not really, it's just that instead of thinking that an anonymous British man has gone missing on holiday, I'm thinking of Michael Mosley being missing, a person I'm familiar with. I didn't claim that he knows me, or any sort of relationship. Confused

How are we supposed to answer though? Yes or no? Seems terribly distasteful

It's not a vote, like AIBU Confused. Like I said, it's conversation, you know, a remark to start a discussion off? I presume you come across that sort of thing IRL.

What do people expect me to say?! I hope he’s “not” found?! Bloody hell this place sometimes! 😂

No, to take it as a cue to have a conversation about it. It's not difficult. Hmm

@4fingerKitKat Life360 is a very good app to have on each of your phones if you want to be locatable. We were able to use it to trace my elderly father to a hospital when he went “quiet” on an overseas trip (he’s fine now).

Damnloginpopup · 06/06/2024 19:19

4fingerKitKat · 06/06/2024 18:32

I’m just about to go on a solo hiking holiday to somewhere quite similar to Symi and it’s fanning my nervousness about it. I will have my phone and two back up batteries with me at all times, not that I can guarantee reception. Falling off a steep path and no-one knowing where I am is my main worry.

PLB. I use a McMurdo.
