Just that really. Will he be found?

I sometimes forget to take my mobile with me. It's not like its a part of me. Michael's phone might be on charge as hot weather drains the battery faster as the processers struggle.

Hope he is found safe and well. This story has been resonating with me all day. My DH is always off walking on his own on holiday often remotely and it’s only recently after much nagging that he takes his phone. He would much prefer not to take it on the basis that we managed perfectly well before mobiles. His wife must be out of her mind with worry, I know how I’ve felt when DH has been gone longer than he said

I’m just about to go on a solo hiking holiday to somewhere quite similar to Symi and it’s fanning my nervousness about it. I will have my phone and two back up batteries with me at all times, not that I can guarantee reception. Falling off a steep path and no-one knowing where I am is my main worry.

Could he consider a GPS tracker attached to something know he always takes? Eg strapped round his water bottle or something. My parents have one for their dog who bolts. It’s hard to remember to take a phone if he doesn’t think about it - but if he has kit that he always takes eg rucksack, walking stick or drink there might be someway to attach it.

If it’s not used eg to make a call, or need charging regularly it might be ok to leave on for his walking holiday.

When someone does their hobby often, or to greater extremes than a Sunday stroll - you do play with the odds more. Considering some way to navigate that risk isn’t asking too much.

Hopefully it's something simple like he was injured and crawled into a cave/shelter to keep out of the sun... and hopefully a heat source camera will find him.

I hope so too

There are people employed just to update people's on standby obituaries. So when they die, the obituary are ready to be posted up almost immediately.

I used to be friends with one - I remember before Amy Winehouse died she said they were constantly updating hers with the latest details of her life because they thought there was such a high risk she might die, and tragically they were right.

Yeah I think that question is odd.

Good heavens, it's not odd to ask 'Will he be found?' on a thread about someone going missing! It's part of conversation, something that people can respond to.

Jellykat · 06/06/2024 18:38

Really hope he's found safe, maybe with just a sprained ankle or some such.
I do like his programmes, he comes across as a nice man!

MaryFuckingFerguson · 06/06/2024 18:39

I was at work when this news broke. So many people in the office expressing concern and hoping for good news.

What about one of those flares that set off coloured smoke? At least you would be noticed by someone hopefully. Or some sort of GPS thing?

ShelleyCarpenter · 06/06/2024 18:40

I really hope he is found safe. His family and friends must be frantic with worry

AderynBach · 06/06/2024 18:41

This is so worrying. It's odd how you feel you know someone when they're in the public eye.

🙏 May he be found safely. His poor wife must be beside herself.

Ihavenoclu · 06/06/2024 18:43

I really pray he is found safe and well.

I do a lot of solo hiking abroad and am thinking of getting an Apple Watch Ultra for this very reason. It has the edge over other smart watches and GPS devices in that if you fall and do not respond it will call emergency services in the area and give them your location. Other devices need you to be conscious to raise the alarm.

I also hope that Michael Mosley is found soon.

Trainday · 06/06/2024 18:44

I think the fact that he set off on a hike in 40 degree heat is odder than not taking his phone.

coffeandteav · 06/06/2024 18:46

I met him at one of his shows. Normally celebrity issues don't bother me. He was one celebrity I really liked.

I find it really odd that anyone thinks they know someone as they are in the public eye to be fair. I genuinely hope he is found, and do feel the time it’s taking in such a small space is a real concern, but I don’t feel I know him, I think that’s a step too far.

How are we supposed to answer though? Yes or no? Seems terribly distasteful

I don't think it was a hike. I think he was just walking home.

He went for a walk. And it reached a max of mid thirties.

What do people expect me to say?! I hope he’s “not” found?! Bloody hell this place sometimes! 😂

It's crazy to me that people can't imagine 5 minutes away from their phone, even on holiday. I don't even own a mobile phone so when I go off for long dog walks alone I don't have one. I'm in my 40's.

No one has said they are in their phone constantly.
Just that most people do carry their phone with them when out, for emergencies if nothing else.

And these days phones are much more than a phone. They are used as a camera or for directions too.

The BBC says 40 and locals are calling it a hike.

"Local residents have said they are trying to understand why someone would leave the beach on foot and go on a hike - without their phone to navigate - in such challenging conditions, rather than taking the boat back."

BobnLen · 06/06/2024 18:51

There was a map and the expected route looked about a mile
