Just that really. Will he be found?

@SallyWD

People seem to relish speculation and drama "Oh he didn't have his phone. So suspicious". I find this type of speculation very distasteful.

YOU may find this kind of speculation distasteful, but that doesn't mean that others are not allowed to speculate and discuss and be worried and concerned. It's a message forum FGS.

If it's bothering you then hide the thread! (And the same message goes to anyone else who is accusing people of 'being ghoulish!') 🙄

And how incredibly rude of you to insinuate some people are relishing in this. What a horrible thing to say.

Albergo · 06/06/2024 18:01

I am sorry to hear this.

It was very hot in Greece yesterday, and whilst the island of Symi is small, parts of it aren't at all conducive to a stroll.

Local reports are speculating he may have fainted due to the heat, fallen or even suffered a snake bite.

Drones, volunteers and police dogs have now joined the search. It will be dark here in an hour. I do so hope for a positive outcome.

Byronada · 06/06/2024 18:02

It's very sad that he's gone missing and worrying for his family.

I find all the speculation about his phone a bit distasteful. It's not mystery to be solved.

LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway · 06/06/2024 18:04

TerfTalking · 06/06/2024 17:59

I agree. I walk the dog at a lot of remote and forestry areas, I’m 57, and whilst I find taking my phone a pain to carry around with poo bags, car keys and water bottle, I do. The terrain can be unsteady and the dog is strong. I always put my phone in a little bag and have What Three Words App, just in case.

This is very worrying, thoughts are with his family for a safe return.

Yeah this. ^ If you DO have a mobile phone (and most people do,) it's incredibly foolhardy to go off out for a long walk, and particularly if it's somewhere remote, and not take your phone. As I said, everyone I know would.

@Byronada

Hide the thread then. People are entitled to discuss it, even if YOU don't want them to. 🙄 It's a free country.

Anyway, I'm done here. Off out to a Church Service and then big supper to commemorate D-Day 80 year anniversary. (With the lighting of a beacon in my village later on.)

Hope Michael is OK.

Netaporter · 06/06/2024 18:07

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway i’m also off to a village beacon lighting. Fingers crossed that they locate him whilst we’re out.

GrimDamnFanjo · 06/06/2024 18:08

I'm really upset about this and hope he's found soon.

Auburngal · 06/06/2024 18:09

Hope he's found safe.

Symi, I went on a day trip when I was in Rhodes. Very pretty island with buildings painted in pastel colours. but very hilly. Some properties are only accessible by climbing up 400 steps! If you watched Rick Stein's Venice to Istanbul he did all the cooking inside an apartment in Symi.

One thing I remember going to Symi is that is closer to Turkey than to Greece and remember getting the "Welcome to Turkey" text which people get when they arrive in a foreign country and switched off roaming as its expensive to make calls, texts and use data.

LizzieBennett73 · 06/06/2024 18:09

Hopefully it's something simple like he was injured and crawled into a cave/shelter to keep out of the sun... and hopefully a heat source camera will find him.

OhMoreDrama · 06/06/2024 18:10

MidnightMeltdown · 06/06/2024 17:33

He's 67. He has no doubt lived the majority of his life without a mobile phone. Seems perfectly reasonable that he might have forgotten it.

Might be different if he was 27

I've had a mobile for 20 odd years now and still occasionally forget it. Hell half the time I put it down and can't remember what I've done with it!

stressedespresso · 06/06/2024 18:12

Why on earth are people still talking about the bloody mobile phone - it’s completely irrelevant at this point

SeriaMau · 06/06/2024 18:13

I hope he is found safely too.
Does it really matter whether we like him or not?

It may be news to you, but humans tend to care about things and people they like, more than things and people they don't.

EverythingYouDoIsaBalloon · 06/06/2024 17:12

Gosh, this sounds worrying. Hope he's found safe.

This piece on the BBC news site is in poor taste I feel - reads like an obituary in places: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8770jyz6vvo

Most news outlets/ broadcasters have pre-written obituaries for lots of celebrities and public figures so it quite possibly IS an obituary that has been repurposed.

nobeans · 06/06/2024 18:20

Luckingfovely · 06/06/2024 13:36

This story is provoking some weird threads.

The OP starts, Will he be found? How the hell is anyone supposed to know that, I wonder?

And the other thread is already planning his funeral.

Yeah I think that question is odd.

Campestris · 06/06/2024 18:21

Is it possible that he had an argument with his wife or whoever he was with and stormed off? If he had his wallet then he could have paid for somewhere to else to stay.

I think you're right

Of course it's possible..

Words · 06/06/2024 18:24

I have been to Symi twice. First time backpacking in the 90s, second time booked accommodation. I roamed all over the tiny island and don't remember any treacherous cliffs but happy to stand corrected.

Yes there is a steep flight of stone stairs from the harbour to the old town but I live in the Pennines so nothing unusual.

Second visit not so pleasant as it had been discovered by the cruise crowd by then. Atmosphere completely changed.

Anyway that is irrelevant. Hope Dr M is found safe and well but after all this time v worrying. Love and strength to his family.

askmenow · 06/06/2024 18:24

Gosh heard this earlier and hope to God he's found to be ok. He has tho always struck me as a very intense/ perfectionist / depressive personality type but hoping I'm soo wrong.
Many greek islands are wonderful for lonesome walks, taking in the wonderful fresh smells on the breeze and the beautiful minuscule fauna hiding on the barren, rocky, sun drenched hillsides. Collecting the varied fossils embedded in sunbleached rocks by the wayside. Wonderful introspective places, having spent many youthful years loving living there,

cheezncrackers · 06/06/2024 18:25

The BBC 6 o'clock news just said that he had apparently planned to walk into the central area of the island, so not along the coast as the initial reports stated. Therefore a much larger search area. I feel there's a bit more hope though with a larger search area that he will be found.

ssd · 06/06/2024 18:25

Just read this, praying he is found safe and well

Retiredearly61 · 06/06/2024 18:26

Hope he is found safe and well. This story has been resonating with me all day. My DH is always off walking on his own on holiday often remotely and it’s only recently after much nagging that he takes his phone. He would much prefer not to take it on the basis that we managed perfectly well before mobiles. His wife must be out of her mind with worry, I know how I’ve felt when DH has been gone longer than he said

Auburngal · 06/06/2024 18:27

4fingerKitKat · 06/06/2024 18:20

There are people employed just to update people's on standby obituaries. So when they die, the obituary are ready to be posted up almost immediately.

dahliadraws · 06/06/2024 18:28

this is terrible, his poor family and surely lots of people who knew him too must be so worried

TheBloatedMiddle · 06/06/2024 18:29

I just feel really sad about this. I know I did not know him personally and I know that there are awful things going on in the world - just recently a family member died in a car accident- he was 21. And everything else as well going on. But I just feel very sad for his family and because Dr Mosley had such a nice manner about him.

I think I am tired of sad things and tragedies and I really hope there is a good outcome for his loved ones sake.
