A better leader?! A man who led us into the idiocy of eat out to help out ? A man who called an election and then panicked and flailed around for a soundbite policy and came up with the idiotically patronising "bring back National service" which is basically something bigoted old men say after too many pints?

Edited

Why did you consider it idiocy?

Furlough and reduced business rates were also considered a vital, and very successful, lifeline for that sector.

TheCoralDog · 04/06/2024 23:54

I was thinking of voting for Kier, and I’ve never voted Labour before. But after that debate, not a chance. He’s a total fool. And a liar. I can’t vote for a man that claims he would never pay for healthcare if his family was suffering, (either he’s a liar or the worst parent ever.) But… taking down a terrorist gang and stopping a mid air explosion is cool 😂

His credentials don’t exactly point to “fool”, he was Director of Public Prosecutions! I am the opposite, I voted Greens last time but will be voting Labour this time.

Cluborange666 · 05/06/2024 00:03

Still Labour for me. The Tories have cost this country trillions. Sunak leads a gang of liars, thieves and charlatans. Starmer needs to be more angry and disgusted with them but I suppose that just isn’t his style l

Nearly every country introduced some version of furlough

Of course eat out to help out was idiocy and it was in defiance of the scientific evidence.

He was Director of Public Prosecutions

Was he? He should've mentioned that.

He mentioned it in highly pertinent places.

It's pretty relevant generally and I am sure it means he understands the country far better than Rishi "my wife gives me pocket money" Sunak ever could.

I was just trying to highlight how he can hardly be awarded status of “fool”, when he is evidently anything but especially as all that was achieved without an expensive education!

I think they were being sarcastic!

Lucimaya · 05/06/2024 00:14

Hasn't made me want to vote for either of those parties.

Sunak was very irritating and rude. Why bring in policies now that he could have done already throughout his time as PM?

Either way, won't be voting Tory or Labour. Both very off-putting.

There wasn't any scientific 'evidence' to be had in Aug 2020, only modelling (much of which proved entirely inaccurate). There was a growing desire to strike a balance between covid harms and non covid harms.

It was totally unnecessary and ill informed

Many in the sector would disagree.

Giraff3 · 05/06/2024 00:33

Starmer was very weak in that debate. He has no ideas/ answers to give.
We need a strong leader for the uk, even more so in this current world and with whats going on and i just see him even more weak if he was put against another county leader.

I dont like tories, but RS was able to give direct answers. It has seemed better / steadier (less of a circus) under RS.

I really dread to think what labour will roll out if they get voted in, as at the moment we dont know what were voting for with labour.

Nat6999 · 05/06/2024 00:34

I watched & felt like I wanted to gag sunk between questions, he shouted & talked all the time when Starmer was answering. Is this going to be the plan right through the campaign?

It would be better if they had someone like Alastair Campbell asking Sunak questions & Rory Stewart asking Starmer & giving them longer to answer, maybe having them on separately so they can't talk over each other.

What does the duck sign mean?

Nat6999 · 05/06/2024 00:38

Rishi sounded like he was in a sixth form debating society debate, not debating the future of the nation.

Keir was much more measured in his answers, his skills as a lawyer came out, he didn't just trot out the party line every time.

But this is what I hate about the Tory outlook, it is mostly we are all doomed mantra, how’s that inspiring stuff or even good leadership?

I mean I thought the anecdotes about sitting around the table with his parents wondering what they could do to help their patients more was a bit much. They all seem to be banking on the voters being as wholesome as them but on the other hand Sunak’s cynicism is a self fulfilling prophecy!

Sunak came over much worse than Starmer, constantly raising his voice and rudely talking over him. Winchester obviously didn't instil good manners. Starmer was more polite and measured and if anything seemed slightly bemused by Sunak. I think Starmer has to be less reserved and more gloves off in such situations. He should have torn Sunak to shreds with his repeated dodgy allegations about £2k tax per household. It didn't help that the presenter was awful and couldn't get Sunak to shut up and he got (took) more air time.

blackpear · 05/06/2024 01:12

Well I heard Starmer say that the £2000 claim was based on false figures used by the Tories. I heard him say that Labour would close tax loopholes, tax energy giants, and tax non-dom people. I heard him say that he would put more teachers in schools and would create a nationalised energy firm that would focus on sustainable energy, which would be cheaper in the long run. He will negotiate with the doctors (if Sunak’s version of negotiating is shrieking petulantly as he did tonight, no bloody wonder the strikes have gone on for so long) and he will respect international law while breaking the gangs, which he is well equipped to do having smashed terrorist rings while DPP.

Sunak was unbearably rude and selfish. Etchingham was hopeless.

The whole gimmicky format of it does not lend itself to serious politics. It favours the gimmicky, shallow, shrieking Sunak. I won’t watch the others, I don’t think. I don’t agree at all that Starmer couldn’t articulate any plans though - I heard quite a lot. If he had more than 45 seconds to articulate the background, that would have been better.

Bululu · 05/06/2024 01:16

Oh so people can see what I saw when KS was asked what is the working class a while ago in LBC. He gets very nervous. That is not a good sign for a PM.
