Tinned chopped tomatoes that are not all stalk and skin

Just that really…what are the best tinned tomatoes? I’ve just fished out a ton of stalk and skin from tins of Napolina and am grumpy about it. About 10 stalks in one tin! I’ve also tried M&S and Waitrose as I thought they might be a bit more “premium” alas no…they were just as bad.
Any recommendations on tins that are consistently (relatively) free from skins and stalk? I don’t mind paying more for great quality but the go-to beacons of quality have failed me.
<also are my expectations too high? 😂>

@baffledmummy - I first bought mutti when we lived in Denmark- it seemed that all the posh yummy mummy's bought them- and when I tried them I saw why- good enough to have on toast too or fried bread
With a bit of grated cheese on makes a delicious lunch

I also don't think I've ever had a stalk in my tinned toms? I've always bought Sainsbury's own, now Asda's own and don't have any problems. If it didn't need to be chunky I'd be buying passata to ensure no unwanted tomato bits

Cirio or mutton. Worth the £.

Mutti tinned tomatoes are the absolute best and as far as I am concerned they taste much better than other brands but they are not cheap

dayswithaY · 02/06/2024 14:30

Mutti are a game changer. They are often on offer - Morrisons and Ocado recently had them on special buys.

ArabellaFishwife · 02/06/2024 14:35

Both Mutti and their Lidl equivalent are excellent. Even DS, a fervent zealot of cut-price cookery, has been converted. Sadly it's a good 12 miles to my nearest Lidl, so he usually has to open the branded article with good grace.

Mutti. I get them when they are on offer. Ridiculous difference in quality, they are like a completely different product.

This! Won’t get anything else now

Caspianberg · 02/06/2024 15:03

Mutti. Game changer if you make homemade pizzas, tastes like Italian restaurant food.

Every time i buy non mutti now I end up regretting

ODFOx · 09/06/2024 21:34

Off the back of this thread I bought mutti and cirio from Amazon.
Cirio are not much thicker than the Tesco Italian I often buy. I was quite disappointed.
Mutti are head and shoulders above the rest, as always.

RampantIvy · 09/06/2024 21:45

And I bought a 4 pack of Mutti from Morrisons on Friday as they were on special offer. I also bought the pizza topping.

Thank you for the recommendations.

SuperGinger · 09/06/2024 21:56

Mutti are the best.

Lokshen · 09/06/2024 22:03

Mutti,.no question

NewName24 · 09/06/2024 22:41

HOW MUCH are some of you paying ? Shock

Aldi's tinned toms are about 35p.
I can't say I've ever had any skin in them and nor have I ever come across a stalk.

No wonder some people's bills are so high on the "How much is your weekly shop" threads if so many people are paying way over what they need to for store cupboard basics like tinned toms.

APurpleSquirrel · 09/06/2024 22:49

We get Aldi whole plum tomatoes & use the stick blender to make them into passata.

Mischance · 09/06/2024 22:49

I enjoy all of a tomato - I do not remove skin or stalks when I eat them in a salad, nor when they are tinned. Most of the Vit C is just under the skin and the stalks are great roughage! Bung 'em down!

RampantIvy · 09/06/2024 23:07

You eat the green stalks of a tomato @Mischance?
I don't know anyone who does that. And I don't need the roughage.

Mutti are about £1.15 each

Depends what I'm making. Pasta bake, Aldi as it doesn't matter
Shakshuka or something where tomatoes are the main dish then I'll use Mutti

StormingNorman · 09/06/2024 23:35

Cirio for preference and Mutti is my back up choice.

ScaredSceptic · 10/06/2024 02:17

Yet another recommendation for Mutti. And for a real treat I love their San Marzano whole plum tomatoes on toast.

suki1964 · 10/06/2024 02:40

Lidl for me. Usually the whole plum and squidge as I go

Redhothoochycoocher · 10/06/2024 05:24

Mutti, polpa. Absolutely love the stuff and won't risk cooking with other brands anymore

Caspianberg · 10/06/2024 05:29

@RampantIvy - I haven’t tried the separate pizza topping, but just use the mutti polpo fine as pizza topping. Just mix the tin tomatoes with dried garlic, dried oregano and basil and season. It’s not runny like other tin tomatoes so no issues

SharonEllis · 10/06/2024 06:10

Never had an issue with Sainsburys own. They are pretty rich.

EatCrow · 10/06/2024 06:14

I opened a jar of sun dried tomatoes to find an almost whole, green tomato with stalk and skin lodged in the top. It looked gross and took up a third of the jar. I emptied it to find more At £3.05 I wasn’t impressed and returned it for a refund.

The quality of food is worrying.

Waxdrip · 10/06/2024 06:20

Never had an issue with Aldi. No stalks or skin and I use a couple of cans a week.
