Tinned chopped tomatoes that are not all stalk and skin

Just that really…what are the best tinned tomatoes? I’ve just fished out a ton of stalk and skin from tins of Napolina and am grumpy about it. About 10 stalks in one tin! I’ve also tried M&S and Waitrose as I thought they might be a bit more “premium” alas no…they were just as bad.
Any recommendations on tins that are consistently (relatively) free from skins and stalk? I don’t mind paying more for great quality but the go-to beacons of quality have failed me.
<also are my expectations too high? 😂>

Mutti

ODFOx · 02/06/2024 11:34

Mutti for things that are tomato based. Tesco Italian ( much more water but no problems with stalk or skin) for things where the tomato is a background flavour as I find the mutti takes over as it's so tomatoey ( like passata with bits).

FOHM · 02/06/2024 11:34

I only buy Mutti.

I use passatta too now. I had none the other week and used tinned tomatoes, I thought the bolognse did not taste if much.

WhereAreWeNow · 02/06/2024 11:40

Another vote for Mutti. It's often on offer in Sainsbury's.

greengreyblue · 02/06/2024 11:40

Aldi. Never had a stalk and use several tins a week.

muddyford · 02/06/2024 11:42

Lidl cheapest ones, ditto Sainsbury. Never ever had that problem. Also Lidl tinned miniature tomatoes are excellent - can't remember the technical term!

KnittedCardi · 02/06/2024 11:46

Used to use Cirio, now only Mutti. You don't need to add sugar. The cheaper own brands are poor quality and acidic.

AnneLovesGilbert · 02/06/2024 11:47

I was where you are a few months back, feeling utterly mugged off as I fished core of out my dishes. Also switched to Mutti on Amazon and wish I’d done it years ago.

baffledmummy · 02/06/2024 11:55

I’ve done it….Ive ordered Mutti from Amazon…thanks for the recommendations. I feel like this might be a life changing moment 😂

I have taken to buying Mutti because like you I got fed up with other brands, particularly when there are bits of skin in among it. I didn't know Lidl did a similar product, thanks to the PP who mentioned that, will try it next time I am in there.

and Morrisons at the moment, 3.75x4

I love tomatoes on toast. Mutti chopped tomatoes are perfect. I also sometime heat a tin and eat them with a spoon like soup!

haddockfortea · 02/06/2024 12:25

Lidl tinned toms are the best that I've found, but I usually buy the tins of whole plum tomatoes and chop them myself. The juice is thicker as well.

BoreOfWhabylon · 02/06/2024 12:41

Like others, since I discovered Mutti I don't use anything else.

I also get their canned whole tomatoes - lovely on toast!

I’ve found Mutti tinned tomatoes to be pretty good and not too stalky.

Seconded. Mutti are the best

EasilyDefined · 02/06/2024 12:47

Mutti are also available in Sainsburys, I find when they are on offer in one place they are everywhere else too, they seem to come down to £1/tin (packs of 4) every few months. I often buy in bulk, again the price varies a lot. I am in a pizza oven FB group and usually find out from there that they are on offer.

I have never, ever experienced this? 😲

Aldi tinned tomatoes are great and about 30p a tin.

We get these. Great quality. Never had an issue.

Xelda · 02/06/2024 13:12

I've been using Aldi tinned tomatoes for years, never had a problem with them.

Springwatch123 · 02/06/2024 07:15

I’ve discovered tinned cherry tomatoes. So much nicer and more taste (and more expensive), or use passatta.

I found some of those in Aldi, they're delicious

greengreyblue · 02/06/2024 13:35

Yes Aldi tinned Cherry toms are nice as are their chunky chopped tomatoes. I’m normally mixing them in to dishes with herbs and spices so seems a waste to spend more even if they are superior. Definitely never had a stalk. Though some people add the stalk as it adds flavour to a dish before removing.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 02/06/2024 13:37

Mutti are great

Coastalcreeksider · 02/06/2024 13:49

PBandJ111 · 02/06/2024 06:42

I always buy whole tin tomatoes and squish them myself. I read once they are higher grade than chopped. Never had an issue.

I do this too, although I buy both types of tomatoes in tins, chopped and plum, from Aldi and Lidl. If I'm feeling flush, I occasionally buy Mutti and Cirio when I see them.

One of the food writers in a newspaper, might have been the Guardian, said she uses plum tomatoes from a tin as they were usually better quality and the juice was thicker.

Crikeyalmighty · 02/06/2024 13:51

Mutti ( although pricey) and cirio - both very good - mutti are particularly good in recipes

Crikeyalmighty · 02/06/2024 13:51

Ooh we don't have a Lidl that close (about 3 miles) but will pop in and get some -
