Purge the Labour party of the lefties

Just seen on BBC news that Labour wants a purge of the left. Bring it on I say. It was unelectable under Corbyn and that idiotic Momentum lot. Why doesn't Diane Abbott just retire gracefully. But loòks like its all going to cause a big row with the Tories rubbing their hands in glee. Will they ever learn.

You sound nice.

Justcats · 29/05/2024 22:35

You mean make them even more like the Tories than they are now?

Viviennemary · 29/05/2024 22:37

No. I mean make them electable. Left hasn't worked.

I'd like labour to go back to being left. I might vote for them again then.

grumpypedestrian · 29/05/2024 22:40

I don’t think you understand Labour principles…..

LakeTiticaca · 29/05/2024 22:41

It came from the BBC?
Bloody hell things are looking up 🤣🤣

ThreeDimensional · 29/05/2024 22:42

Sorry, when were they "left" and it didn't work?

echt · 29/05/2024 22:47

I thought they'd done this already?

changeison · 29/05/2024 22:50

we're a centre right country so a real left wing labour won't happen.
Corbyn proved that. This Starmer government, if it happens, will be short lived

theeyeofdoe · 29/05/2024 22:51

i think we need left wing and right wing people in government to give it balance.. then everyone else needs to be centrist.

racism/facist/communism has no place in UK politics, but otherwise we need a mix of political views in parliament

Kendodd · 29/05/2024 23:13

So we'll just have the Right or the Far Right to choose from?

shittestusernameever · 29/05/2024 23:16

I cannot abide the far left.

Labour needs to get back to its roots. It's needs to be a working class party

TizerorFizz · 29/05/2024 23:24

Not that many true working class now. Education and decades of university education has bitten a big chunk out of it.

Foot wasn’t electable. Corbyn wasn’t electable. Blair was. Starmer probably will be. Lesson learned. No left and no Dinosaurs. Diane Abbot lets her unwieldy thoughts take over and she’s paid the price. Playing the “I’m a bigger victim” card isn’t great and apologizing is a word. Momentum - uni lecturers etc. What do they know about working class? They don’t even teach them.

marie3e · 29/05/2024 23:28

I think it hasn't worked just because people weren't ready for it last time

LiterallyOnFire · 29/05/2024 23:29

Yes I think you have a point. Blair had to do it and the unions weren't as worrying as the anti-semites.

We desperately need some Labour correction for public services, but they are scoring a lot of own goals.

People have never been ready for it and never will be. If you look at the successful governments of Northern Europe, they’re centrist and that’s where ours needs to be.

YaMuvva · 29/05/2024 23:36

I don’t think it’s about removing lefties, it’s about removing people who shouldn’t be MPs. Like anti-semites.
I have no idea why Diane Abbott has had a tantrum today about something that hasn’t even happened - there’s no space for big babies in the next government. We’ve put up with big babies for 14 years we don’t need any more in power.

Crikeyalmighty · 29/05/2024 23:46

@TizerorFizz I'm with you- most far left I find tend to be actually trustafarian types with bank of mummy and daddy and like being pure activists- there's a few older Derek Hatton types - but not as many as you would think. I know plenty from when we lived in Bristol and they couldn't run a bath, never mind a government- good on Starmer - I wouldn't let them get a sniff of any power. Everytime they get a hold on Labour the party lose badly. It's not possible to have a tailor made for you party without PR- the current Labour Party has a dominance towards the centre ground so those that don't want that- either accept that (you've had the Tory's for 14 years ) or go and form your own party - stop undermining the current party

Viviennemary · 29/05/2024 23:50

The tantrum seems to be because shd thought she was barred from standing. Then Starmer said she hadn't been and no decision had been made yet. They obviously dont want her to stand but she's not playing ball.

I don't see what is wrong in being left. I don't understand those that aren't. Oh well.

Doesn't mean it's wrong as people get scared and prefer the status quo.

TizerorFizz · 29/05/2024 23:59

I agree that she’s been asked not to stand as the price for being let back in. I wish the loony left and dissenters like Moggy and Braverman would shut up too.

Did anyone notice how much time Farsge got on tv last night? He’s not even a MP. They have 1 mp don’t they? His position is totally overblown now we have an election. This was on the much maligned bbc! He’s done so much damage yet he’s back spewing bile yet again.

I don't think you are aware of the 'roots' of the Labour Party, it wasn't Blairite, clause 4 is considered far left these days

I remember reading their costed manifesto at the time and thinking, if people actually read it I don’t understand what people wouldn’t have like about it. It was completely reasonable and would have helped so many people.

But I guess being a red Tory is preferable.
