Purge the Labour party of the lefties

Just seen on BBC news that Labour wants a purge of the left. Bring it on I say. It was unelectable under Corbyn and that idiotic Momentum lot. Why doesn't Diane Abbott just retire gracefully. But loòks like its all going to cause a big row with the Tories rubbing their hands in glee. Will they ever learn.

I think Diane Abbott has often been treated badly certainly by the press and by the party but Starmer can not appear weak against the left of the party

Right now the left are doing what they do best and that is handing the Tories ammunition to use against Labour they have an amazing knack of keeping Labour in opposition and not much else

Starmer has made the party electable, we could have a Labour PM very soon. Corbyn and his comrades 🙄 caused so much damage the party was a disgrace under him and this the Tories will remind the public at every opportunity

Unfortunately Rayner has played straight into the lefts hands and the Tories are laughing they absolutely love her she is so predictable

Corbyn 'caused so much damage' that he almost won the election.

In fact, he would have won had his own party supported him. But they didn't! And you think he should support them now?

HRTQueen · 31/05/2024 00:16

But he didn’t win the an election even one so poorly campaigned for by the Tories what’s the use of nearly winning 🙄

and as for 2019 let’s just not bother going there

I’m very pleased he isn’t a candidate for the Labour Party

are you going to remind me that Labour had the largest party membership 😆 like that did any good

The tories always poorly campaign... nothing new there!

Yes, I'm well aware that he didn't win... but had members of his own party not sabotaged him... had the media not waged a war on him... he absolutely would have won.

No I wasn't going to remind you that they had the biggest membership. What an odd thing to say 😂

Well those like yourself who are so convinced of Corbyn’s greatness usually trot out this line

again and again Labour voters told those canvassing he doesn’t stand for me but this was ignored because the party membership became what was important

it was student politics

as for the Tories poorly campaigning you may not like how they campaign but unsuccessful it is not. We do not need rallies with chanting the party leaders name we just need to get the message across to as many voters as possible without having to deal with party infighting

Starmer isn’t a fool he won’t play into this but the Tories absolutely will

TryingToSeeTheFunnySide · 31/05/2024 05:22

it was student politics

That's another one of the sound bites that doesn't stand up to scrutiny

grumpypedestrian · 31/05/2024 05:51

There are so many people starting discussions about the poor state of education and how difficult it is to see a GP or the waiting times at A and E. But given a chance to actually elect a party who had strong plans to tackle this and it’s seen as extreme left and student politics.

I think it hasn't worked just because people weren't ready for it last time

The people of this country have never been ready and are unlikely to be. This is I think one of the concerns about Labour is if they gain power, the far left re-emerge and all the fighting starts again which will put them out of power. They should have learnt after Brown lost the election but didn't but they would be advised to

Wait, what now, you thought Brown was far left? Neo liberal centrist Brown was far left? How far right do you need to be to think of Brown as far left, thats literally blown my mind

Sunflowergirl1 · 31/05/2024 06:37

@JustAnotherPoster00 . If you had read my post correctly, I never said Brown was far left. I said they should have learnt after Brown lost, which is when they started the usual left wing generated civil wars.

If his own party didn't support him why would the rest of us. This is topsy turvy idealist socialist claptrap thinking at its very worst.

And right has worked?

Who are you talking about? Sunak? his party aren't supporting him and even the ones that aren't avoiding an election "bloody nose" by standing down, are jumping ship to Reform or Labour.

They've had 14 years and everything is worse.

The rubbish about the economy is turning around is an outright lie, we are all worse off thanks to their economic mismanagement.

£29 billion wasted on HS2 then cancelled, who the fuck would do that???? yes a guy who earns £330k per week would.

Out of touch

Tory infighting is ok then ? Why are they always let off the hook ? And yet
KS has a hand of steel and is silencing all debate, deselecting far left candidates.
KS is weak and will be overthrown by far left MPs if Labour win.
Which is it ?

Sunflowergirl1 · 31/05/2024 07:48

@EffieeBriest I don't say Tory infighting as ok. The post was about Labour. Hence I responded to the post. I think they are all dreadful but traditionally Labour always has a period in government but sinks because they go more left and the public doesn't get it....ie brown wasn't far left but far more so than Blair

HRTQueen · 31/05/2024 07:49

We had the little red book thrown down

Corbyn wouldn’t share a platform with Cameron when they were supposedly both campaigning for the same outcome (though everyone knows Corbyns true stance on the EU) wtf would he do at international meetings 🙄

The endless rallies to show just how popular he apparently was yet where was the reaching out to connect with voters who

The narrative of Corbyn being part of the peace talks

The not tacking antisemitism when he was leader

i have often wondered why Corbyn was in the Labour Party a party he constantly voted against he episodes have been far better suited in the Socialist Labour Party but what political career would he had out of that

HRTQueen · 31/05/2024 07:52

And I am aware of Tory infighting but I am a Labour Party member so I care about what is happening more about Labour gaining votes than I do about the Tories

Labour will never win an election unless it’s more to the centre. We are a conservative country with a small c who occasionally vote Labour it’s not difficult to understand you work with what you have not with an ideal set of principles

Brown was on exactly the same page as Blair.

Brown lost because of the economy (GFC) and his "bigoted woman" comment, which the media went to town on.

Just as they are with Abbott now, any mis step by Starmer, however small, will be used by the media to attack Labour and if they don't make them, the Tories will lie, so we have Reeves didn't work for the BoE and Labour will raid your work place pensions.

If this carries on, then i think the Cons will get back in, time and time again i hear "they are all the same"

Totally agree. But they need to gain trust which is hard to get and easy to lose. The widespread worry is they gain power and the hard left all emerge from hiding and start again.

The anti semitism was revolting and did a lot of damage to them. I know it has turned off a lot of my friends who are very moderate Labour who were aghast....a couple are Jewish and they will never ever vote Labour again no matter what.

Sundlowergirl1 · 31/05/2024 08:14

@thefireplace . I think your view of Brown and why he lost does take account of the many wider issues. Yes. Banking crash occurred but the reality was of years of over spending and far too high borrowing and then when rainy day came, the roof crashed in. Unfortunately this is always what does for a Labour government....ie 1970s and calling in the IMF. They are never trusted with finance. Hence why I think Reeves is shadow chancellor. Wes Streeting many good ideas and knows the NHS has to be utterly reformed....but if they get elected and the left wing immediately start the civil war...then once again they will be done for

Thats simply not correct.

Borrowing, even after the Global Financial Crash was 65% of GDP & Labour actually ran a budget surplus, something that even with North sea oil never happened.

IMF ? the Tories left Labour a car crash of an economy in 1974, not all their fault as oil prices trebled and Ted Heath had to deal with that, it was the Tories that gave us the 3 day week...... often portrayed as a Labour thing in the right wing media

Frankly though, i'd like to deal with more current events, the 3 day week and the IMF were over 50 years ago, all the main players are now dead.

Norman Lamont however is still around, as are most of the Tories who gave us Black Wednesday and soaring interest rates to 15%, the £ crashed.

Funny how Con mismanagement never seems to get mentioned.

Left wing start the civil war? What are you talking about? It is clear that any left wing party will not even be allowed to get in power. The assault on democracy is coming from the right.

And I can't believe that people think Brown was left 😂 stop, just stop it!

User135644 · 31/05/2024 08:50

The problem with the whole 'purge the left' mentality from the Labour right/centrists is how pissy they get if the left then purge their votes from Labour.

Even in the last election over 10 million people voted for Corbyn's Labour. No doubt some of them held their nose but millions would have voted because they liked his policies, after 40 years of neoliberal destruction.

I'm not keen on Angela Rayner I admit and disapproved of her making a profit on her council house with her socialist beliefs. But the Tories milked it to death. It didn't work. They've now gone on to Diane Abbott who I used to like but again private school for her son. And yet we have Liz Truss. Labour should be attacking her. The damage she did to the economy. Never gets a mention by Labour. Why not.And still an MP as large as life. If anybody should be kicked out it's her.
