What time do you get up in the morning and why?

I'm just curious really.

I have always been a 7am riser. That is the time DDs wake up (they are now at primary school) and I always prioritised sleep throughout their baby stages.

But I've found myself recently waking up at 6am on the dot every day, then staying in bed dozing and feeling more tired by the time I actually get up. I'm wondering if I got up at 6am when I naturally seem to wake up I could get more done and actually have time for some exercise (or just a quiet coffee in peace!)

What time do you get up in the morning and what's the reasoning behind it?

I wake up about 6:30 cause my toddler comes in but we don’t tend to get up for another hour or so usually. We read books.

Womblealongwithme · 29/05/2024 08:11

6am. In work just after 7, the commute is only 15 mins.

Bells3032 · 29/05/2024 08:12

Lots of early risers here. Currently between 7 and half 7 when my daughter wakes up..

During COVID, before I had my daughter, was more like 850 to start work at 9 (WFH).

Pre covid it was 715 on weekdays and 9 again weekends lol

I'm a massive night owl but just had to adjust

MyNameIsBatty · 29/05/2024 08:13

8am, later at the weekend but am expecting so all that will change very soon! I am already waking up much earlier than before and I don't much like it! I'm a night owl and would happily stay up til 2am and sleep til 10am if I could.

Moier · 29/05/2024 08:15

Whenever l wake up.
66 and retired.
Sometimes l don't get to sleep until most of you are getting up
..like 5am
I have pain insomnia.
But l fell asleep early last night.
Had 13 trips to the loo ( bladder problems.. )
Woke at 6am.
Tonight will probably be completely different.

Gymmum82 · 29/05/2024 08:18

Between 4.30-5 week days to go to the gym before work. 7am on weekends

CrunchyCarrot · 29/05/2024 08:19

Anywhere between 6-7 a.m. I'm naturally an early riser and can't just doze off again, but these days I need to get up as soon as I wake due to my back and joints, need to get them moving and the cat needs to be fed and go out!

  1. Either for a run (every other day) or up with DD2 while DH goes for a run. Whichever one of us isn't going for a run sometimes gets a bit of a lie in if DD2 (just turned 2) sleeps in a bit but she's usually up by 6:15.

I don't know how I managed to get a bullet point there. I meant to just write 6

fieldsofbutterflies · 29/05/2024 08:54

@GameOfJones it definitely makes a difference imo.

If I wake up earlier than I'd like I often get up and feed the cats, let the dog out, make a coffee and come back up to bed to read or mess about on my phone for an hour or so.

4am.

My ds is a swimmer

Wow! Is that every day ? And when do you go to bed?

Giggorata · 29/05/2024 09:17

It varies. (Also retired) I'm a night owl by inclination, so to get my seven hours in, it typically would be between 9 and 10. Tends to be later in cold weather.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 29/05/2024 09:19

7.30 in the week for the school run at 8.30.
It's half term now and I work in a school so was awake at 8.45 today.
I'm not a morning person unless going on holiday

Neeemo · 29/05/2024 09:20

6am here. Could get up later but I like to sort the house or garden a bit before 5yo gets up and have time to have a non rushed breakfast together before school.

On weekends I get up whenever my small person crawls into my bed for a cuddle.

blarneebeekeeper · 29/05/2024 09:20

depends, i work shifts and do will swap between days and nights and struggle to swap out of them. currently getting up at 5.30 even on days off as im on days routine, but im back on nights next week for a few weeks and will stay on a night routine and get up at about 3pm until im forced to swap back to days. I find it easier to stay on the same sleep pattern my work rota dictates.

Those who get up early and get to bed early..this is my dream but I find the rest of the household ruin it for me...and to be fair I can't expect teenagers to be quiet and sleeping (or even home!) by 9pm. How do you protect your early bed times?

greenmario · 29/05/2024 09:24

On a school day my alarm is set for 7.15 but kids can and often do wake me around 6.30 or 6.45

I'm usually in bed and ready to fall asleep by 9.30 most nights

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 29/05/2024 09:24

I'm surprised how early people get up! I'm often awake at 5:30 these days, but I couldn't get up, get dressed, do a workout or some cleaning without waking everyone else up!

I sleep with an audiobook or podcast on, it helps drown out the noise of 3 teenagers.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 29/05/2024 09:27

Meant to add, I get up at 6:40 on work days, 30 min drive to work and am there at 8. At the weekend I tend to doze a bit until 7 and then sneak downstairs and knit with a cup of tea. I really enjoy that time.

TheCheeseThief · 29/05/2024 09:29

Normally 7am, however today 9am as it's half term and ds8 was up through the night.

I prefer to get up early go to bed early, more to do in the day time!

theteddybear · 29/05/2024 09:30

Omg u all get up so early 😮

During the week eldest has school so I usually set my alarm about 7.30am. Sometimes I snooze for 10 mins but I usually just look at my phone trying to wake myself up, I often don't get out of bed until 8am. If I'm going to the office (usually once a week) then I need to get up about 7am and be out the door just after 8am and I hate that!

At 8am it's then a fight to wake the kids up! I thought with it being almost summer they wld get up easier but my god they are getting worse recently!

At weekends I sleep in for as long as I can. So usually until youngest (4) wakes up. She does like a gd sleep so usually sleeps in until 8.30-9.30am.

I am not a morning person and I don't think I ever will be. Luckily my kids aren't early risers 😄

toomanylegs · 29/05/2024 09:30

I work in an office Mon to Fri and start work at 8:30am - I have a DS in sixth form so I drop him off on my way to work. We aim to leave the house at 8:00am so I work backwards from being ready to go at that time. My alarm is set for 6:00am on days when he's in school, so that I have time to wake up with a coffee for and browse on my phone for about 20 minutes before doing a 30-minute workout. I then aim to be in the shower for 6:50 in order to be out when he gets up at 7. That then gives me an hour to get dried, put on makeup, dry my hair if I've washed it, get dressed and get my lunch together.
I could probably do everything faster and have an extra half hour in bed, but I like to do things at a leisurely pace in the morning!

devildeepbluesea · 29/05/2024 09:31

Awake with the shipping forecast (5.20am) then have 2 coffees in bed. Up around 6-6.30 to walk the dog and exercise before work. I wfh so if I’m running late I can shower at lunchtime.

EarringsandLipstick · 29/05/2024 09:33

5 am Mon - Fri to get to gym by 6. I really need to go to bed early but due to busy DC (sport) I don't.

Weekends 620 / 630 but awake since 5 due to weekday pattern so tend to feel crap having dozed for an hour +.

I keep saying I should just get up at 5 but it seems crazy on a weekend!

I am not good at getting up promptly without that impetus (of training)
