What time do you get up in the morning and why?

I'm just curious really.

I have always been a 7am riser. That is the time DDs wake up (they are now at primary school) and I always prioritised sleep throughout their baby stages.

But I've found myself recently waking up at 6am on the dot every day, then staying in bed dozing and feeling more tired by the time I actually get up. I'm wondering if I got up at 6am when I naturally seem to wake up I could get more done and actually have time for some exercise (or just a quiet coffee in peace!)

What time do you get up in the morning and what's the reasoning behind it?

05.15 alarm to be in the gym by 05.45.

06.30 dog walk then get kids and myself ready. Out the door by 08:00 to get to work.

Gosh I think people who get up so early must have no social life at all. I'd hate to get up so early every day. They must be in bed by 9pm every day. That is the body clock of a child.

You know it's perfectly fine for people to get up and go to bed when suits them, right?

I get up at 6 (so not mega early) and go to bed at 11 ish. 7 hours is plenty for me and I manage my social life perfectly well.

NaughtyBoyGeorgeMichaelJacksonBrown · 29/05/2024 21:21

I get up 2 hours before I go to bed!

In reality I have done all sorts of shifts and routines over the last 30 years. My natural, ideal day would be 9am to midnight but not possible at the moment. I do 6am to 10pm. Urgh.

I remember working 8pm to 6am as a teenager and my dad repeatedly calling me lazy for sleeping at 7am until 9.30 when my day shift started at 10am.

He'd had it drilled into him that earlier was better and more virtuous. Had no clue about anything outside of his experience. And never had his eyes open past 9pm.

If I have the time and am free of kid/pet and work responsibilities...I can easily put in a 12 hour shift in bed and I don't care if it's a waste/lazy...I love it.

For 40 years I got up at 6:00am to go to work. It took me over five year's of retirement to stop. Now I get up the second time (the first anywhere between 4:00 and 6:00 am for a wee.) Which varies but is usually between 8:30 and 10:00 am. That time seems to be dictated, again, by my bladder.

So many early risers! I get up at 7 in the week for work/school but really I'd sleep until about 8.30 if I could. I guess I'm just a night owl as I'm rarely asleep before midnight.

VivX · 29/05/2024 22:52

I am not a morning person and I hate getting up. I wish I could naturally spring out of bed naturally at 5am but unfortunately that's not the case.

If I am going into the office, i have to force myself up at 6.20am to leave house at about 7am.
And I drag myself out of bed at 8.30am 8.45am if wfh.
10am or 11am if weekend/day off unless there is a special reason to be up earlier.

I don't usually go to bed before 11 or 12, later on a Friday and Saturday and I read for at least 30-60mins every night before sleep, which probably doesn't help with getting up early.

If I genuinely didn't ever have to get up for work, I would stop up until 2am and not get up until at least 11am.

Bloody hell fire I can't believe people chose to get up this early Grin

I really wish I was a morning person but I'm not and can't see myself ever being one. I wake up at 7.15am on week days in a huge stink with my alarm and weekends is around 8am when the kids wake up. I'm also in a stink then Grin

Go to bed around 10pm.

Yep! This is me. I'll never be a morning person either.

I once read a piece about a mum who said she fitted in writing her book by getting up at 4am and writing for an hour or two before everyone else gets up.
Yeah, that's never happening - or at least, if I’m up at 4am it's because I haven't gone to bed from the day before.

I've seen threads with people commenting on retired people not getting up til late and worrying that they are 'slowing down' and 'giving up on life'. My thoughts were of people who are naturally owls rather than larks and after years of the having to be present somewhere at shit-o-clock in the morning now have the chance to go out to the pub / theatre / wherever in the evening and still have the chance to wind down and go to bed at a time they are naturally tired .

celticprincess · 31/05/2024 12:32

Me - as late as possible. I’m not a morning person. I often get a late second wind as well so end up going to bed later than planned. My alarm is set for 6:30 for the days I work as I leave by 7:15. Non work but school days for the odd my alarm is set for 7am so o can get kids out - youngest is self sufficient and often wakes me when she gets in the shower. Eldest is harder work. Saturdays we have a 10am activity and so I set my alarm for 8:30. But Sundays and school holidays when we don’t need to be anywhere I don’t set an alarm and wake up anytime between 9-10. 10 is my latest as my evening sleep cycle goes out the window and the same for my eldest child. I really need a job though that’s more accommodating to my sleep patter (teaching is not 😂😂😂). I feel like I am always tired.

Edited to add. My kids are now older. I am a single parent. They can get up (or not if older child) and amuse themselves on a morning. When younger I was forced out of bed as soon as one was awake. Youngest has always been an early riser.

Eggsandavocado · 31/05/2024 12:37

My natural body clock wakes me up at 4:30/5. It’s my most productive time of day, between 5 and 8:30 I get the dogs out for a decent walk, go for a run or a lake swim, sometimes I join a local boot camp. I also get 30 minutes or so of housework done, prep dinner, admin …. When I get home from work I chill 🤣

Eggsandavocado · 31/05/2024 12:45

Icehockeyflowers · 29/05/2024 20:33

Spending time with family. Watching tv. Chatting on the phone to a friend. Going for a walk with a friend one evening a week. Going late night shopping once every few weeks. Catching up with a friend for a quick bite to eat and a glass of wine once a month, playing a team sport once a week, singing in a choir, taking an evening class. These aren't 'out' but they aren't conducive to having an early night and being up very early either but I will wait while you tell me that you do all these things and more and get up at 4am too.

ETA I really don't care what time people rise at. I am more interested in what time they go to bed at. I grew up in a household where late nights (very late nights e.g. 1am/2am) were normal. I now go to bed at 11/11.30 and try to turn off my lamp by midnight. If I could sleep in until I woke naturally it would be nine hours whereas I usually get six or seven at most. I find sleep patterns interesting insofar as weight, aging, stress levels are affected. However I found the general tone of the thread initially quite odd as each subsequent poster got up earlier than the previous poster as if it was a competition. I can only assume that the bedtimes are equally early.

Edited

I generally go to bed at 10 (up at 5) I attend a sports club twice a week, also an early morning sports club weekly. I go out with friends for dinner /wine I sometimes get engrossed in a series and stay up late but I always wake up at the same time

NonBinaryBlanket · 31/05/2024 12:47

This thread has made me feel so lazy! I wake up early (around 6am) but then just drink coffee and laze about until it’s time for the school run.

It seems I should use this time to go to the gym or do some housework.

Crushed23 · 31/05/2024 12:50

Mon-Fri my alarm goes off at 05:30 and I get up at around 05:45. Leave the flat at 06:15 to go to the gym before work.

Saturday and Sunday I get up at around 06:30-07:00 (but naturally wake up at 05:30 as my body is used to it).

YetAnotherSpartacus · 31/05/2024 12:54

WFH. 9.15 for a 9.30 start.

Mornings are the spawn of Satan.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 31/05/2024 12:58

I get up half an hour before I go to bed, and lick the road clean wi me tongue.

I drink me morning cuppa without sugar, or milk ... or tea.

Mamabear48 · 31/05/2024 13:31

5.30 on the 3 days I work to get myself ready before the kids wake (2&6) between 6/6.30. Need to be out the door for 7.30 and they faff. The days I don’t have work and just school run I aim for 6 but mostly always awake just before again to get myself ready before the kids!

Strokethefurrywall · 31/05/2024 13:32

5am to work out or 6am on a rest day.

I don't sleep later than 7.30am generally.

EndorsingPRActice · 31/05/2024 13:39

5:15, as that’s when the alarm clock goes off for my DH to get up and go to work. I don’t start work until 9am and work from home quite a bit, so I usually do a bit of housework before starting, plus sandwiches for DC and DH, feeding the pets, school run, general house tidy. In the summer I sometimes go for a walk which is lovely. On days I’m commuting into the office, the only thing that gets done before I leave is pet feeding.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 31/05/2024 13:48

730am - to ensure my kids get out the door by 830.

Then we (DH and I) have 30 mins peace before we both start wfh.

It's getting easier as they get older. Mostly just a bit or organising.

Emmz1510 · 31/05/2024 19:37

When my daughter was tiny I used to wish for a lie in, but in reality I’ve never been able to have a proper lie in since she was born even on the rare occasions I’ve had the opportunity.
Weekday mornings when going into the office- get up with alarm at 6:45 and get ready before LG (9) gets up.
Weekday mornings when WFH or not having to go in till later- 7:45 to get LG to school on time.
Weekends- usually 8/8:30. I rarely manage to lie later than this even if LG is away on a sleepover with Gran or friends

Auburngal · 31/05/2024 19:47

5:30am when I start work at 7am. 6:30am on other days.

Days off where I don’t need to set alarm as no early plans, I wake up at 20-30 mins after times my alarm is usually set. Only done 3 months of 7am shifts (have done the odd one to cover holidays) and my body clock has already adjusted. Maybe a different story when those times are dark.

Poddledoddle · 01/06/2024 11:53

10 or 11am 😆 but I work till about midnight at home and then have downtime

BitOutOfPractice · 01/06/2024 11:56

I am not a morning person at all. I get up at 6:30 to prep for the day, have a cup of tea in peace and either get to the gym or get an early start at work. It feels like the middle of the night to me, especially in the winter.
