What time do you get up in the morning and why?

I'm just curious really.

I have always been a 7am riser. That is the time DDs wake up (they are now at primary school) and I always prioritised sleep throughout their baby stages.

But I've found myself recently waking up at 6am on the dot every day, then staying in bed dozing and feeling more tired by the time I actually get up. I'm wondering if I got up at 6am when I naturally seem to wake up I could get more done and actually have time for some exercise (or just a quiet coffee in peace!)

What time do you get up in the morning and what's the reasoning behind it?

7.30am on work days. 7.30 to 9.00am on wfh days or weekends.

I often wake up a lot earlier than this, but don't get up immediately. I'd rather be in bed than anywhere else in the early mornings.

Many of the answers here almost competitive in nature about who gets up the earliest and many of them are early risers unnecessarily. Spending an hour over a coffee or breakfast tv for example. For many it is their choice.

Yeah I didn’t say everyone. Some people
do it by choice too. I don’t see how it’s competitive.

No one has sneered at later risers as you have at early risers though.

GetyourheadoutoftheovenIris · 29/05/2024 19:57

5am to go to the gym before work. On a weekend I sometimes lie in until 6 but my dogs don’t realise it’s the weekend so we still get up early and go for a walk.

I would love to get up later and not go to the gym but when I’ve got up at 7 for work and not gone I feel all ‘undone’.

TheSingingBean · 29/05/2024 19:58

About 9am. Semi retired.

I have tried to get up early all my life and I hate it. I have had to do it for work and when the children were young but now I let my body decide and 9am is just about perfect.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 29/05/2024 20:00

I get up as late as I possibly can and during the holidays I usually stay in bed until lunchtime or later. My dc are beginning to take after me.

CupofTeaforWe · 29/05/2024 20:01

5:30! Even on the weekend. I have 3 early risers DCs so that cuppa before the House descends into chaos is bliss!

For some people having that hour alone with a coffee could be the difference between having a good day or a bad day, being a good mum or bad mum, a productive employee or a rubbish one, a good mental health day or a tricky one.

You see choice but for some it really isn’t.

Alarm is set for 6.45am, and I need to be out of bed by 7am. Leave for work/school at 8am.

Sometimes I wake before the alarm and sometimes it wakes me up. I'd like to be someone up and to the gym early, but I need a lot of sleep.

I usually go to bed anywhere from 8pm to 9.30pm depending if I'm at training in the evening or not. I need 9 hours of sleep to feel reasonable, 12 hours makes me feel human. I honestly don't know why I need so much sleep! I can survive on 6 hours but I feel terrible.

Titsywoo · 29/05/2024 20:04

Wow people get up so early!

My kids are now at uni or working so I don't have to worry time wise. I run my own business so it depends what time of year it is - first 6 months of the year I don't need to get in till 9 so wake up at 8. The busiest season is August to Jan so I'd probably get up a bit earlier at 7.30.

At weekends I either sleep till 9 or 10 or if I have plans like hiking (which I try to do once or twice a month) I'm up and out by 9.

I go to bed at 10.30 most nights and read for an hour and a half then try to get 8 hours a night.

At786 · 29/05/2024 20:10

Around 08:30am during term time, 0930 -10am during half terms etc

Gosh I think people who get up so early must have no social life at all. I'd hate to get up so early every day. They must be in bed by 9pm every day. That is the body clock of a child.

What do you do that is so exciting and important to stay up really late

Weirdtbh · 29/05/2024 20:11

As late as possible! Ha

Catterbat · 29/05/2024 20:11

I get up half an hour before I go to bed, and lick the road clean wi me tongue.

Doje · 29/05/2024 20:15

6.30am. I have to do it twice a week for work, and then I choose to do the same three days a week. It means I can get the dog out early which buys me some time during the day (to sit on my arse mostly).

I enjoy it mostly, a dog walk in the daylight at a lovely peaceful 6.30am is a wonderful thing. Less so in the dark in February....

billysboy · 29/05/2024 20:20

5 am ready to start work at 7 after 30 min commute
an hour in the morning is always worth two in the afternoon

Well good for you you don’t need to. Lots of people have little or no choice.

Are people " out" on multiple school nights ? I am out as in meeting up with people outside the home in the evening about 4 times a month. Have people round or visit others probrably another 2 or 3 times. What counts as a social life for a middle aged married woman who works ft these days ?

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 29/05/2024 20:26

This time of year, I'm often up at 6am or even earlier because the light wakes me. In the depths of winter, I sometimes don't get up till gone 9 at weekends. I have to get up by 7 for work on weekdays.

Spending time with family. Watching tv. Chatting on the phone to a friend. Going for a walk with a friend one evening a week. Going late night shopping once every few weeks. Catching up with a friend for a quick bite to eat and a glass of wine once a month, playing a team sport once a week, singing in a choir, taking an evening class. These aren't 'out' but they aren't conducive to having an early night and being up very early either but I will wait while you tell me that you do all these things and more and get up at 4am too.

ETA I really don't care what time people rise at. I am more interested in what time they go to bed at. I grew up in a household where late nights (very late nights e.g. 1am/2am) were normal. I now go to bed at 11/11.30 and try to turn off my lamp by midnight. If I could sleep in until I woke naturally it would be nine hours whereas I usually get six or seven at most. I find sleep patterns interesting insofar as weight, aging, stress levels are affected. However I found the general tone of the thread initially quite odd as each subsequent poster got up earlier than the previous poster as if it was a competition. I can only assume that the bedtimes are equally early.

Do you?

I’m usually out a couple of nights a week & often see friends at weekends. My social life is fine thanks. Although admittedly I’m getting up at 5am onwards, not 3 or 4….

I don't watch much TV ( tbh never really have). I do see friends or colleagues for dinner once or twice a month. Yoga on a Wednesday ( finishes at 8:30), also PCC ( I know rock and roll). Obviously I stay up later ( but no much) on these occasions. What I don't do however is drink during termtime.

pinksheetss · 29/05/2024 20:50

6.15/6.30 if I am on a day I need to be in the office (three days a week)
7/7.30 if it's a wfh home

Weekends I tend to also be away around 7/7.30, think just naturally set to that now.

I'd love to get up earlier to get gym time in or exercise in some form but I'm so lazy. Even with the time I'm awake at just now I quite happily fall asleep around 8.30/9pm. Even earlier sometimes.

Wow so many 5 ‘O Clockers! I would be ill if I had to get up so early every single day. I’m
in my 50s and still sleep in like a teenager at weekends and 8.55 when I’m at work (log on at 9.00am!)

mathanxiety · 29/05/2024 21:06

Alarm at 5:45, up by 6, work starts at 7.

I go to bed between 10:30 and 11. I get just about 7 hours of sleep a night, some nights a little more and some a little less. Any more than 8 hours and I feel knackered all day, and any less that 6.5 means I need to swig tea all morning.
