This is exciting, I've met a gamekeeper

I don't know why it that feels exciting, but the way it came about...

I'm doing a long distance trail on my own and having a marvellous time enjoying some solitude.

This evening I'd booked a table at the pub where I'm staying, but when I went down for dinner (not before!) was told the chef had a family emergency and they're not doing food. [Shock]

So I went to the only other restaurant in town to be told they didn't have a table, unless the man at the bar table didn't mind sharing....

He's lovely. About my age, an interesting history, good conversation and, I don't know why this tickles me, a gamekeeper.

He's gone to the loo, but conversation is easy and wine is flowing....

The ones round here shoot anything that moves, horrible. One even used to go on a busman's holiday to Africa to shoot big game. Just vile.

I’m it of interest and derailing thread slightly but are you vegetarian?

GnomeDePlume · 29/05/2024 07:51

I'm glad you had a lovely evening @Confortableorwhat . It is fascinating when you get a glimpse into a totally different world.

A gamekeeper? Is that someone that shoots and kills animals?

Really?

This is making me think of Liz in Motherland when she meets a farmer when they go away for a few days.

Maybe a bunk-up in a tent is in the offing OP?

Shepherds hut in a beautiful location.

Nah. I'm not about to get "involved" with a man with a "complex" personal life, who lives 350 miles from me. Fun for one night though.

You can’t walk away from your destiny! This is clearly the start of a Barbara Erskine novel and it will turn out he was Owain Glyndwr in a past life and you, his lady…

whitefluffytrainers93 · 29/05/2024 08:06

Yes @jlox but @NeedToChangeName has maybe added a sinister twist haha

You think!

Tonight's stop on your walking tour is a pub on top of the moor. After a bracing walk walking the hills and a long soak in a scented bath you're in the bar for dinner. Wearing dove grey cashmere and knee high boots you're quietly engrossed in your Jilly Cooper.

The fire's lit, the pub deer hounds snooze in front of the fire and candles flicker on the ancient walls as the storm rages outside. Suddenly, the door swings open and silhouetted against the lightening, there he is! A broad and brooding Sean Bean in tweed....he crosses the bar in two manly strides and.....................

@Corinthiana 😂

Corinthiana · 29/05/2024 08:25

@Churchview - you ought to write romantic novels, you'd coin it in! 😉

Thanks @Churchview bit niche but there it is!

I once dated a gamekeeper I met on a night out. He turned out to be a bit unhinged but he was a LOT of fun in the run up 😂

Confortableorwhat · 29/05/2024 08:42

Actually, the last random man I met on a night out was a lumberjack 🤣 It probably is all nonsense, they've spotted the need for a rugged type in middle aged women?

Makes a change from when I was young and every man you met was either a helicopter pilot or a fireman 😆

I had a misspent youth lolling about reading Jilly Cooper when I should have been studying and have the appalling A level results to prove it.

Have you read Lady Chatterly’s Lover?

The lover is a gamekeeper called Oliver Mellors.

That was literally the second post on the thread.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 29/05/2024 09:29

Sounds fun!

When I was younger and stayed on farms bordering estates you’d occasionally meet the gamekeeper (I was a child!). They seemed like normal men to me even if they did shoot things. Bit scary though but they did make it clear what was their land (their bosses land).

Someone whom I’ve been trying to get to know is ex army, bought himself out and bought a farm for a few years. Nice if you like the Landy driving, flat tweed cap and Barbour look with wellies. He sold the farm now doing something different.

Excuse me for prioritising reading the OP’s comments and only scanning the rest.

They have a reputation for being womanising twats. Just don’t fall for him!

What?! You’ve been reading too much chick lit.

My only question would have been ‘Spaniels or Labradors?’ 🐶❤️

Are there any empty shops in the village for you to suddenly decide you are going to stay and open up a book shop / bakery / twee cafe?

Lol. Love it. 😁

Yes why is it always a small cafe with home baked goods in a cornish village or something, or they are a writer but never seem to do much writing. And they always have a creepy old house they have inherited from an old dead relative hense the bundles of cash

EveryOtherNameTaken · 29/05/2024 09:55

Going to do some admin then settle in and read later 😁
