This is exciting, I've met a gamekeeper

I don't know why it that feels exciting, but the way it came about...

I'm doing a long distance trail on my own and having a marvellous time enjoying some solitude.

This evening I'd booked a table at the pub where I'm staying, but when I went down for dinner (not before!) was told the chef had a family emergency and they're not doing food. [Shock]

So I went to the only other restaurant in town to be told they didn't have a table, unless the man at the bar table didn't mind sharing....

He's lovely. About my age, an interesting history, good conversation and, I don't know why this tickles me, a gamekeeper.

He's gone to the loo, but conversation is easy and wine is flowing....

A gamekeeper? Is that someone that shoots and kills animals?

No , it’s someone who enables breeding, protects from predation and maintains the balance of the estate in his ( or her, there are female gamekeepers) care.

Blackcats7 · 28/05/2024 22:56

The various game keepers I have met have not only killed animals as part of their job but enjoyed extra killing as a hobby. All had dead bodies about their homes which were also beyond filthy.
One broke a feral kittens leg (I was there on behalf of Cats Protection to trap and neuter and rehome the cats and kittens he had left to breed and often starve) and he thought nothing of this. The kitten's leg had to be amputated.
Be aware of exactly what this man's morals are before you decide whether to spend any more time in his company.

People who don't enjoy the idea of chasing and shooting/trapping/poisoning wild animals are fun sponges, yes... 🤦🏼‍♀️ Some people really have no respect for nature and shouldn't be allowed near the countryside! If you can't cope with wildlife existing, move to a city.

There no such thing as a "natural" environment, not in UK anyway. Our landscape looks the way it doesn't precisely bexuasenits been managed by gamekeepers and the like for 100s of years.

...and they do all this so rich twats can then come and blast them to pieces.

Sorry OP, but not a gamekeeper.

Raises, shoots and kills animals yes. And then eats the meat often. Also a huge part of the job is forest/land improvement conservation. Dealing with fallen stock and education. Very hard work and more of a lifestyle choice as the pay isn't great.

Well place is probably closing soon, where are you going now?!

Cicciabella · 28/05/2024 23:06

Ohh has he touched your leg yet and show you his wooden Lodge?

BeaLola · 28/05/2024 23:11

I think it was the bit where you said he was single but had got there in a complex way ... definite a hallmark film

Wednesdaysotherchild · 28/05/2024 23:14

Wildlife murdering is instant ick.

WearyAuldWumman · 28/05/2024 23:16

Go for it. My late husband was a former ghillie on a certain famous estate.

No regrets. (Apart from the fact that he's no longer around.)

Delphiniumandlupins · 28/05/2024 23:40

What dog/dogs does he have? That's all I would care about. Have met a few gamekeepers - none of them made me feel like Constance Chatterley.

determinedtomakethiswork · 28/05/2024 23:44

Shamelessly placemarking.

I laughed way too hard at this! 🤣🤣🤣

iamsoshocked · 28/05/2024 23:50

Has he shown you his guns yet??!!

Well I'm fully invested OP, please ignore the fun sponges, apparently confident in generalising an entire occupation based on the one or two they know of 🙄

I don't think you know how gamekeeping works.

Nosferatutu · 28/05/2024 21:28

The only other gamekeeper I can think of is Will Grundy from the Archers. Who isn’t the subject of any Jilly Cooper-esque fantasies I’d wager!

Will Grundy spoilt whatever lingering romance gamekeepers had, although George Barford and Greg Whatsisname had pretty much quashed any Mellors daydreams…

therealcookiemonster · 29/05/2024 00:18

I heard they shoot birds. be careful

Theimpossiblegirl · 29/05/2024 00:51

I'm hoping he's game, if not a keeper.

😂

FFSNorman · 29/05/2024 01:53

Well….?

Giggorata · 29/05/2024 02:03

Most of the ones I have known are very fit, with great legs…

… but some sadly have that red faced, weatherbeaten complexion.

(shallow, just thinking about the physical)

coxesorangepippin · 29/05/2024 02:26

Have you hit the bullseye or what op, where are you

Ladyj84 · 29/05/2024 02:38

Lol I live in an area of many game keepers and erm all the ones I know are lovely guys old and young and some are married some aren't and a good shot to never ever heard of the person saying they have a bad rep in my travels about lol

Heirian · 29/05/2024 04:49

Oh come on, OP. There's natural and unnatural, and then there's deliberately corralling and raising animals to be shot and hunted for sport. Don't let yourself off the hook so easily.
