This is exciting, I've met a gamekeeper

I don't know why it that feels exciting, but the way it came about...

I'm doing a long distance trail on my own and having a marvellous time enjoying some solitude.

This evening I'd booked a table at the pub where I'm staying, but when I went down for dinner (not before!) was told the chef had a family emergency and they're not doing food. [Shock]

So I went to the only other restaurant in town to be told they didn't have a table, unless the man at the bar table didn't mind sharing....

He's lovely. About my age, an interesting history, good conversation and, I don't know why this tickles me, a gamekeeper.

He's gone to the loo, but conversation is easy and wine is flowing....

A gamekeeper? Is that someone that shoots and kills animals?

Usually protected birds of prey if they're anything like the ones around here.

Everintroverte · 28/05/2024 21:36

I want to know what happens!!!

somethingwickedlivesnextdoor · 28/05/2024 21:38

I hope he doesn't poison hen harriers and buzzards. Lots of bad press about gamekeepers.

I thought that was Harry's domain

HolyMoly24 · 28/05/2024 21:44

Place marking just for the gossip

reallyworriedjobhunter · 28/05/2024 21:50

Ooo. Details please.

What are you both having for dinner?

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 28/05/2024 21:52

Meh, they're usually arseholes who take way too much pleasure in their jobs for my liking.

Confortableorwhat · 28/05/2024 21:59

Oh wow, people taking his job very seriously.

All I need to know for tonight is that he's very interesting regarding the local history and wildlife (and I'm a tourist here), listens well and is attractive in that outdoorsy, middle aged but in remarkably good condition kind of way 🤣

Absolute standard for this website 🥱🥱🥱🥱🥱 Nobody cares what a gamekeeper is, what incorrect generalization you have cos you walked past a farmer once once 30 years ago and whether you know one at all. Literally not the point. Anything lighthearted gets sponge funned the life out of on here.

Enjoy your random dinner mates company and fill us in after!

newnamethanks · 28/05/2024 22:07

Mellors? It had better not be, I've booked him months ago as I'll be in need of his services throughout July. It's a regular thing 'Oh, tis my delight on a shiny night, in the season of the year'. 😉

CheeseWisely · 28/05/2024 22:08

Well I'm fully invested OP, please ignore the fun sponges, apparently confident in generalising an entire occupation based on the one or two they know of 🙄

whitefluffytrainers93 · 28/05/2024 22:10

Oh my gosh! I love this....

whitefluffytrainers93 · 28/05/2024 22:12

No updates... this must be a good sign! Has the making of the start of a good Jilly Cooper novel!

Churchview · 28/05/2024 22:15

If things go well OP, can you try and wangle me a brace of pheasants for Saturday evening please?

Rainbowshit · 28/05/2024 22:17

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 28/05/2024 21:04

Oh. I was hoping his name was Hagrid and he was going to show you his pink umbrella.

😂😂😂

Agree with this. They certainly keep the courts and the RSPB busy.

Votersswing · 28/05/2024 22:29

Exciting op!!

Dartmoorcheffy · 28/05/2024 22:31

We were in a restaurant tonight in a little touristy fishing village and Paul hollywood was stood outside looking at the menu, but he didn't come in.

ThreeDimensional · 28/05/2024 22:31

People who don't enjoy the idea of chasing and shooting/trapping/poisoning wild animals are fun sponges, yes... 🤦🏼‍♀️ Some people really have no respect for nature and shouldn't be allowed near the countryside! If you can't cope with wildlife existing, move to a city.

CombatLingerie · 28/05/2024 22:39

@Carelesswispalover oh that’s great I really hope that’s what’s happening to OP 😂. My late DM absolutely loved a Hallmark film especially the Christmas ones they always make me think of her.

Not reallyyyyy the point though. Nobody asked who cared or not. If it was a thread about opinions on jobs then yes. So yes fun 🧽

newnamethanks · 28/05/2024 22:46

I was visualising something along the lines of Vinnie Jones as constructed in his latest incarnation by Guy Ritchie. Tough and manly but with a soft heart. And a very large gun.

jlox · 28/05/2024 22:50

I hope he's wearing a tweed flat cap and takes it off before he kisses you in the rain...

Haggisfish3 · 28/05/2024 22:51

I’ll have a leg of venison!

LuluBlakey1 · 28/05/2024 22:53

Perhaps you could chat about how many Red Kites and other Raptors he has poisoned and killed?
