Curious things your neighbours do...

Lighthearted!!

I'm not a curtain twitcher (I promise!) but was vacuuming earlier when I noticed the neighbour opposite was out jetwashing his drive...in the rain! He's now moved on to jetwashing the car (also in the rain). Each to their own, I guess.

But it reminded me of another neighbour who used to come outdoors each night and sweep the pavement in front of his house. Not sure what he was sweeping away (dust? Stones?) but most nights at around 8pm, you'd hear the swish swish of the brush.

Does anyone else have neighbours who do curious things?

My husband used to be the weird one, washing his car every few days. God forbid it got a speck of dirt on it - out came the buckets (2 bucket system), the various cloths and brushes, the handheld dryer thingy for blowing excess water off the car, the umpteen different polishes for bodywork, tyres, dash, windows... I used to wonder what the neighbours thought.

He would also mow the lawn every four or five days and had to have perfect stripes from his petrol mower. Now he's terminally ill and is unable to do these things. He detests that my car is always dirty, but I have other things to do (like being his full time carer) to waste time on washing cars. Besides, it rains too much in the UK. He's constantly "suggesting" I mow the grass again, and I push back as much as I can, because I don't want the neighbours thinking I've succeeded him as the "crazy one" 🤣🤣

I used to live in a first floor flat, the ground floor flat had a little yard - about 2m squared, which was right under my bedroom window

Every bloody Saturday morning at around 7am they would be out there sweeping it for a good 45 minutes (how? It would take max 10 to sweep properly), followed by sweeping/mopping it with strong smelling bleach and then rinsing

That was bad enough, but the gross man that lived there would fart and belch loudly all throughout this weird ritual, meaning I was woken every week by the swish of the broom mixed with the stench of bleach and rancid beer farts every weekend

I assumed the wife would banish him outside to get away from his disgusting-ness for a couple of hours

An older lady in the next village stands out when it’s raining heavily and sweeps the rain on the pavement in front of her house.
The pavement is on a downward slope, so more water than she could ever sweep, cascades down.
It’s a thankless and baffling task……..

HateMyNewJobSoMuch · 27/05/2024 22:23

@Marmaladelover no not Devon - I’m in Scotland!

Astonishing that more than one person thinks plastic plants in your front garden is a good look!

Has strings of lights on every fence panel, security lights x8, that pick up any movement from small animals, all facing my garden. If I wanted to be in my garden at night in the dark I get lit up like a border control or prison.

My neighbour puts ant killer on the road. Why not leave the poor creatures to do their thing?

coffeepleeease · 27/05/2024 23:41

Hoover the whole house at 10.30pm
Do a work out at 10pm, TV full blast shouting "yeah! Come on! 1,2,3,4" etc, with the occasional "wahoo!"

Sweeping to clear the muck off and have the water rinse surely. You don't seriously think she is sweeping the water?

twoandcooplease · 28/05/2024 00:02

My neighbour pours every basin of water in an outside drain that to get to he has to go down some steps, open a latched gate and still walk 10ft

Another neighbour also washes his car in the rain

I'll think of more as I read the thread I'm sure. Also a curtain twitcher...

One of my neighbours makes a point of opening his back door whenever I'm outside in the garden. He wants to stand and talk all day - but only about himself. Complete one way conversation, not interested in anything I have to say. Other than my first name, I doubt he knows anything about me - but I could tell you his life story. He recently retired so it's all day every day and I dread having to go outside.

That being said, I'm probably known as the 'weird' one amongst all of the surrounding houses - due to my OCD I have some pretty strange habits that my neighbour's see regularly - but I won't divulge them here.

Ignore us to our face when we’ve only ever been friendly and polite 🤷🏼‍♀️

Headphones and ignoring required here, I think. How annoying for you, that would drive me mad.

An upstairs neighbour had an alarm that rang when he entered his flat, an older gentleman but I don't see why it would be useful.

Another played a guitar repertoire of three songs (wish you were here, come as you are and one I forget). In the three years I lived there they sounded exactly the same, no improvement or spicing it up with a new song.

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 28/05/2024 01:09

Hopefully my neighbours don't see me (flat) checking that my door is locked multiple times whenever I leave Blush

ginislife · 28/05/2024 02:19

@the80sweregreat one of our neighbours painted his tarmac drive swimming pool blue. It's back to being black now as I'd imagine the owners objected (they rent it).

My (absolutely lovely and very houseproud) neighbour gets her garden ready for summer by hoovering it every April. This takes 2 days with the hoover going for around 8 hours per day. I honestly don't know how she hasn't burned out the hoover.

SirAlfredSpatchcock · 28/05/2024 04:34

We used to have a lady who lived in the house opposite, who was very diligent with regularly watering the plants that she had surrounding her front door.

They were all made of plastic.

My neighbour cuts his grass, except he doesn't have any grass. He has a patio and goes over it with a lawnmower??!!

😁

Oh, I used to live across from her! Although, thinking about it, she was older than me, so would be around 70 now 😱

Ha ha ha ha!!!

She hoovers her garden? 😂😂😂
We used to have neighbours who were constantly cleaning- literally not a day went by that they didnt clean their windows, car, driveway, front step etc They spent hours and hours every single day, both of them, doing this. We used to refer to them as "the cleaners". Every time we looked out of the window they'd be cleaning something.

They were retired so had the time but I used to think it was so lovely that they found each other as imagine if one of them was like that and the other one didnt want to do it? they were literally made for each other and it was kind of heart warming that they were so united in their love of cleaning.

Downstairs has a very nice garden which she treats as a giant potting shed. Potters around, trims a few leaves and goes in after about 10 minutes. She never uses it for sitting outside (which is the point of a garden, IMO).

I won't sit in my garden because I know my neighbour is watching me. I keep it tidy but I have never sat in it since I moved in.

Mine will throw sprouts, animal carcass, basically anything out of his window into the front garden ... its frustrating.

eeeewww this has to be the worst one 😭

Hahaha I do this - sometimes I even take a video so I have evidence 🤣

violetcuriosity · 28/05/2024 07:22

Never leave their house unless they're going to work and never have visitors. They both do daily 'exercise' by doing laps of the garden at 7am and 6:30pm barefoot. Very odd
