Curious things your neighbours do...

Lighthearted!!

I'm not a curtain twitcher (I promise!) but was vacuuming earlier when I noticed the neighbour opposite was out jetwashing his drive...in the rain! He's now moved on to jetwashing the car (also in the rain). Each to their own, I guess.

But it reminded me of another neighbour who used to come outdoors each night and sweep the pavement in front of his house. Not sure what he was sweeping away (dust? Stones?) but most nights at around 8pm, you'd hear the swish swish of the brush.

Does anyone else have neighbours who do curious things?

We moved in 11 years ago and one of the neighbours warned us about Paula at number 9. She had blokes "Aall colours, shapes and sizes one after the other, it's a bliddy disgrace, ye knah..."

She's an osteopath and has a back room for consulting and treatment!

One of our neighbours puts her washing out on the line every morning at 7. Full load, every day out it goes no matter what the weather. Pouring rain - she’s there pegging it out. Snow - same.

I need to know what happens at the end of the day if it has been raining non stop. Does she take it back in or leave it out over several days? Or does she take it in and put the same load out again the following day ? Or does a new load go.out the next day ? So many questions!
It kills me looking at my washing getting wet on the line so I really don't get this behaviour at all. V strange !

mitogoshi · 28/05/2024 11:56

@tiggergoesbounce

Are you my neighbour, my washing regularly gets a second rinse on the line, but it's me trying to be environmentally friendly and line drying when I'm not home all the time

I had a neighbour who used to cut his front lawn with a lawnmower at least once a week in the growing season.....then go around the sides with a pair of scissors!

PylaSheight · 28/05/2024 12:22

My neighbour opposite has adopted an unsocialised, reactive, guarding breed of dog. This neighbour was out in his garden talking to his next door neighbour, and the entire time the dog was barking insanely (she hates anyone being close to her territory so always barks at anyone in the adjoining gardens, and even at me opposite if I'm out in my garden). I just can't get my head around why he would allow his dog to do that, it went on and on and on and on... It makes me so cross I want to shout "Shut your fucking dog up will you!", but I don't want to fall out with him as he's otherwise a nice bloke.

I have friends who are similar in that they think nothing of letting one of their dogs bark endlessly while they're out in the garden with them. It boggles my mind that they 1) aren't irritated by the noise themselves, and 2) don't care that the noise of their barking dog will travel all around the neighbourhood

When we were househunting, we looked at a house on a very "naice" road and one of the neighbours was out on his hands and knees in the front garden with a pair of nail scissors and a tiny bottle of what I can only assume was weedkiller, dabbing it on anything that wasn't a blade of grass!

I have men calling at random times of the day, most days. I am a racket stringer and I'm also the badge secretary for the district for our scouts. Maybe I'm on this thread and I don't know it!

HighOnMaiden · 28/05/2024 14:00

If the weather is nice he'll come out and open all the windows in his car, closing them at night before he goes to bed.
He never uses the boot of his car. Doesn't matter how much stuff he has it goes in the passenger side, then, because of the layout of his drive, he walks all the way around the car to the passenger door and retrieves whatever he's bought and walks all the way back around to his door.
Baffles me why for the small bag he has he doesn't just reach over. Doubly baffles me why for the big stuff he's squeezed in, why he doesn't use the boot of his huge 4x4.

MegsNaiceJam · 28/05/2024 14:13

We have a neighbour a few doors down, let’s call them Couple A. They bought the house from Couple B in a house swap, where Couple B moved into Couple A’s old house on the coast.

Couple A have effectively replaced Couple B. They are in the exact same social circle, joined the same clubs, go to the exact same pub (out of a choice of 3) couple B went to. They all have white Teslas.

It is as if clones have moved in, but with different bodies. They still have people round to use their hot tub and garden bar. Parties go on late into the night, the exact same, with the friends of Couple B’s now being friends with Couple A.

None of these people knew each other before they swapped houses. No mutual friends in common as they both moved some distance.

i would like to ask one of my neighbours why he doesn’t cut his hedge back so he can see to get off his own drive. He makes a song and dance of getting off the drive, his wife stands and waves him out. Cut back some of the hedge that overhangs the pavement and they can see. Weird.

the80sweregreat · 28/05/2024 14:17

Maiden
Why doesn't your neighbour use his car boot ? Sounds fishy to me. Maybe he has something in there he doesn't want anyone to see ? ..
People are odd.

I can maybe answer that for the big stuff, the boot is so large things move about a lot, it’s quite distracting when driving, so if you lodge it in thr back it stays put. I do the same. Example. A case of wine or a suit case I will shove in the back seat rather than the boot, as it will move about and hit the sides if it’s all that’s in the boot, where as if it’s on the backseat it stays put.

not a big deal and the boot gets used when it’s a lot of stuff or someone in the back seat, but yes if no one in the back, I tend to shove stuff in there rather than have it swing about in the boot.

Our neighbours, instead of curtains or blinds, have stuck sheets of paper to all their windows. Absolute maniac behaviour.

TheDumpling · 28/05/2024 15:43

Years ago when I was single and living alone I had a neighbour who was absolutely OBSESSED with Cliff Richard .... each to their own! ...

And in her bedroom window facing mine she had one of those head-sized creepy Cliff masks facing me... it absolutely terrified me to the point I had to keep my windows and curtains pulled at all times in all weathers.

I asked her once that I understand she's a fan and I don't have any problem with that, it's entirely her own business but can she please reverse the mask so it's looking into her bedroom and not mine? She gave me the one finger sign and a loaf of f-bombs and stormed off.

I've never been a Cliff fan, finding him to be utterly creepy anyway but those masks look evil to me!

RosePetals86 · 28/05/2024 15:45

Only put rubbish in the wheelie bin at close to midnight, every night, despite being home all day… odd balls!

Leaves washing out over night.
Leaves washing out in the rain

Mine does this too. It's normally there for several days!

She never leaves it out overnight. I don’t examine it closely enough to register whether the same load goes back out next day if it was raining the first day.
Another neighbour never hangs laundry out, but as soon as the weather improves she starts using her tumble dryer (which is in the garage) and it’s on all day even on the hottest days. I have no idea what she does all winter but whatever it is it doesn’t involve the tumble dryer.
I live in a land of washing weirdness.

flapjackfairy · 28/05/2024 23:18

@VesperLind Thankyou for the kind update. V weird behaviour I agree but each to their own I guess.

My neighbours all seem very normal and lovely in comparison.
The ones across wash their cars once a week without fail..its at least several hours of a job with polishing cloths and toothbrushes round wheels!

I misread 'gravel' as 'grave' there - even before the very appropriate post directly after yours!
