WWYD about lying hairdresser?

I was bridesmaid at a wedding yesterday. The bride wanted to spend the morning with her mum and sister who is MOH and then the bridesmaids turn up at 12 for photos and to get dressed. All bridesmaids were asked to do their own hair and makeup so before Christmas I booked with my regular hair dresser for her to do my hair and makeup yesterday morning. My appointment was at 9. I have been going to the same hairdresser for the past 7 years and go roughly every 3 months for a colour and book hair/make up for special occasions because I am genuinely terrible at styling my own hair! It’s something that she knows and often jokes about! I also don’t own much makeup as I don’t wear it often.

On Friday night just after 11 I got a message from my hairdresser to say it was her husband messaging and that she was currently in a&e very unwell, would likely be there for hours as she hadn’t been seen yet and she needed to cancel my appointment. Obviously I replied and thanked him for letting me know and sent my well wishes.

Being ill is completely unavoidable and although it inconvenienced me, I was more concerned about her health. The late hour meant that I couldn’t get in touch with anyone else and even though I did call a few local salons as soon as they opened on Saturday morning, the only appointment was one late in the afternoon.

I managed to do my own hair, just straightened it and put a nice clip in. I put a bit of makeup on but it didn’t look that good! The other bridesmaids are completely different skin tones so they were able to help a little. I felt a bit rubbish but had a good time anyway, just didn’t feel very special! I have very low self esteem at the moment and felt so washed out standing with the stunning bride and beautiful bridesmaids. It really hasn’t helped.

Whilst waiting for the reception I was on instagram and saw a friend’s story. She had gone on her hen do abroad that morning. She shared photos of the airport which were from 6:30 in the morning and she’s there with all her friends all posing with drinks. My hairdresser was one of them. It’s definitely her and we have both spoken about hen do friend being a mutual friend. I went on to friends Facebook profile and saw they’d all been for a meal and then stayed in an apartment the night before and hairdresser was in the photos but not tagged. There was a video of the hen doing something that was posted at 11:30 and hairdresser is there in the background laughing with someone else. In the actual video the hen said something about it being nearly midnight and how she needed her beauty sleep.

I paid a 50% deposit for my appointment and in the message her husband said that she would transfer the deposit to my next appointment which is booked for a few weeks time for a colour. I am a regular customer and this appointment was made months ago. If she had double booked herself and said she had this hen do then I would have understood and had time to book elsewhere. Instead she has lied about it and left me completely stuck.

Would you contact her when she’s back from the hen do and ask her about it? Would you cancel the upcoming appointment? Would you just let it go?

I’m trying to work out a scenario where she hasn’t lied but she was hardly going to be able to do my hair whilst on a flight to Ibiza even if she wasn’t ill.

I’m so glad you got your money back OP, but I can’t believe the cheek of her! She knew she’d been caught out in a lie and yet still tried to keep your future deposit! She honestly doesn’t deserve her customers. So glad DN commented on that post! X

Sorry just realised I've cut off some of my post somehow!

And now the hairdresser...

So I sent her a message on Saturday and asked her to send the money by the end of the day. She replied and said that the deposit for my future appointment wasn't refundable as I was cancelling it but due to her "unfortunately having to cancel" she was willing to refund the deposit for the missed appointment instead of putting it towards my next appointment which isn't something she would usually do but appreciates that it was inconvenient for me

Wow! I can’t believe the brass neck of her. Cheeky woman!

Thank god you got your deposit back though and leave factual reviews wherever you like. Others deserve to know.

Well done OP - and thanks so much for coming back to update.

Stick to factual comments about what happened rather than any negative comments about her character and she won’t have a leg to stand on to raise any dispute. People are entitled to know what happened because she could easily do it to someone else.

Well done for standing up to her!! Great outcome.

I’ve left a factual review about my old hairdresser (who was a total piece of work) and she then got this removed on Google and accused me of lying and then denied I was ever a client when I’d been using her for on and off over 10 years. Didn’t use her due to distance for a few years which she knew about.

I found other review sites and left other factual reviews there.

The one thing it cemented in my mind (and MN told me) is not to mistake these people as friends. They’re not, it’s a business transaction. No matter what they say/do or behave towards you.

It’s wrong that negative reviews can be deleted. Check a trade do this too and it makes the whole point of reviews void!
if a business disputes a review it should be investigated not deleted

Fraaahnces · 04/06/2024 12:08

Wow! What an arrogant piece of work to at hairdresser is!!! Imagine thinking that she gets to decide how this was going to work out.

I can’t recall what happened but basically she complained to Google and as far as I recall told them she’d never heard of me!

When other clients complain she’s done the same reply to them, “never heard of you, no record of you on our booking system” which is rubbish as they’re just a small salon in SW London!

Fascinating that she's claiming that she wouldn't refund a deposit when she cancels because she fancies buggering off for a holiday. Doesn't she understand how these things work?

Did she ever explain all the nonsense about being in A&E?

Problemzapper · 05/06/2024 09:28

She was very cheeky trying to keep hold of the future deposit, blaming it on you for cancelling! If she had any remorse over how she treated you or valued you as a customer and friendly aquaintance, and knowing how damaging a poor review from you might be, she should have grovelled and apologised and tried to get you to accept a heartfelt apology, but obviously she wasn't that bothered and had no scruples, so you're better off with a new hairdresser - but if any important engagements crop up in the future make sure you check/double check your hairdressing appt is still in place at least a week beforehand. Hope you find a better/more reliable hairdresser.

hollyblueivy · 05/06/2024 11:35

So have you got all of your money back or is she keeping the deposit for your future hair appointment?

If she is keeping it then surely that would only be non refundable if you cancelled within say 24-48 hours?

MarkWithaC · 05/06/2024 14:05

What a chancer she is. Oh well, karma/word of mouth will get her.

OVienna · 06/06/2024 08:25

@ChaCharDee do you have all your money back? I'm slightly confused.
