How often do you open your windows?

I am very much a windows open person, and will always open my bedroom window in all weathers, even if it's just for an hour to rid the room of that musty sleep smell.

I moved house last year, and I've noticed that very few people on my street have their windows open. My next door neighbour on one side occasionally has their bedroom window ajar in the warmer months. One neighbour across the road has started opening one small upstairs window recently. My other ndn never has her windows open. Another house also has their windows firmly shut and blinds constantly closed! I know they're in, as I can see them coming and going. They must just live in darkness constantly.

Meanwhile, I was sitting over the weekend with all windows thrown wide open, and my back door propped open until 8pm.

My neighbours must think I'm insane, but why would you not want a flow of fresh air through the house? Am I the abnormal one here?

Why are you keeping such close tabs on your neighbours? Grin

BoobyDazzler · 20/05/2024 09:06

Every day, all year round.

can’t imaging never opening windows 😳

Isitchill · 20/05/2024 09:06

Every day. Just a few minutes in winter and more often in summer. Back door is often open on hot days.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 20/05/2024 09:07

Every day, all year round

Decafflatteplease · 20/05/2024 09:07

Open them every morning while we get ready even in winter although a shorter time in winter!

Revelatio · 20/05/2024 09:07

Maybe they are opening the back windows? I can’t believe people keep tabs on their neighbours like this!!

SpringKitten · 20/05/2024 09:08

Every day. On hot days in summer, we open windows at 5am and shut them as the sun works it’s way round the house. We will have doors wide open too when we are downstairs as long as outside temp is over 18.

user09876543 · 20/05/2024 09:08

Every day. We also sleep with the window open (and throughout summer often with the bedroom french doors open too). Back door is generally wide open too

selondon28 · 20/05/2024 09:08

I love opening the windows. Only when it’s warm enough, I don’t like being cold, but as soon as it’s warm enough I fling all our windows open, I don’t really mind if bugs get in. My parents are paranoid and always say oh we can’t open the windows too much wildlife comes in, even though it’s a beautiful day outside and they’re sitting in a stifling house. Or they’re using a fan or something else to achieve the coolness that simply opening their windows would achieve.

EasilyDefined · 20/05/2024 09:08

Every day for short periods, all day in summer if we're at home. I can't imagine noticing what my neighbours do though.

Ginmonkeyagain · 20/05/2024 09:11

Every day, in every room, regardless of the weather. Our bathroom top window is permanently cracked open. My dad is a fresh air demon and I inherited that trait.

Oddly (not really odd at all) we get none of the mould or condensation issues many in our block of flats complain of.

JJathome · 20/05/2024 09:11

Do you really sit and see who has their windows open?😂

Haha, yeah I realise that comes across quite creepy. I'm not staring out at my neighbours 24/7. I just happen to notice that I very rarely see anyone elses windows open.

I noticed yesterday as I was sitting out in the garden and heard the neighbour slam her door shut every time she went in and out. I thought why not just leave the door open on such a lovely day?

You sound like a nosy neighbour 🙄

MaryFuckingFerguson · 20/05/2024 09:15

We don’t ever close our upstairs windows. Open 365 days a year. Even if we go away, they are locked in an open position.

Downstairs patio doors and windows are opened daily.

HowDoYouSolveAProblemLikeMyRear · 20/05/2024 09:16

Every window in the house wide open at the same time for a minimum of ten minutes, whatever the weather.

On a nice day like today they'll be open all day. My husband works from hom
e so we rarely have to bother closing them during weekday working hours.

I feel like fresh air is healthier. And if I'm really honest, I'm hoping it slightly mitigates my lack of cleaning the house 🙈

DimplesToadfoot · 20/05/2024 09:19

Never :-( although I'd like to.

If I do I get to breath in the vile stench of my neighbours drugs and get to listen to their music which drowns out my TV. Its bad enough with my windows closed.

spriots · 20/05/2024 09:20

We don't leave our ground floor windows or doors open because of the risks of cats or foxes getting in. I like cats but I don't want to accidentally trap one in the house and I definitely don't want foxes in the house.

We have the curtains closed in our front bedroom basically because we aren't really in there during the day much.

So we only really have the back bedroom windows open

Churchview · 20/05/2024 09:23

We always have windows open unless it's very cold and we have the heating on. My mum used to open a window every day to 'change the air' and it's stuck with me.

rkahic · 20/05/2024 09:25

Bedroom window in particular is always open, unless we’ve gone out

LadyLazlo · 20/05/2024 09:25

We have neighbours directly opposite, (maybe 8m? Our kitchen window looks directly at their house) who also never open blinds or windows. It's not nosy to notice this odd, 10 year phenomenon surely?

OP I'm like you, windows and doors open to freshen the house!

Allthehorsesintheworld · 20/05/2024 09:27

I’m windows open , year round daily. This time of year windows and doors permanently open.
Friend who lives 200 yards away is opposite. Opens bedroom windows in summer but downstairs windows have never been opened, ever, since she moved in 20 years ago.

🤷‍♀️

FlamingoFlamboyance · 20/05/2024 09:31

I have trickle vents open and the bathroom window is usually open to release steam from showers, but other than that no we never open them.

The moment we do we get massive flies in which buzz around and I then have to spend ages trying to get them out

elm26 · 20/05/2024 09:33

Every day, all of them.

This time of year, we don't close any of them. If it's chilly at night we put them on the latch bit (can't remember what it's called 😂).

My bedroom window is open all year round as can't bear a stuffy bedroom.

AGlinnerOfHope · 20/05/2024 09:33

Flies, cats, birds, the dog… toddlers, sun, noise… all sorts of reasons.

I love an open window but am fussy about which ones because of all of the above!
