How often do you open your windows?

I am very much a windows open person, and will always open my bedroom window in all weathers, even if it's just for an hour to rid the room of that musty sleep smell.

I moved house last year, and I've noticed that very few people on my street have their windows open. My next door neighbour on one side occasionally has their bedroom window ajar in the warmer months. One neighbour across the road has started opening one small upstairs window recently. My other ndn never has her windows open. Another house also has their windows firmly shut and blinds constantly closed! I know they're in, as I can see them coming and going. They must just live in darkness constantly.

Meanwhile, I was sitting over the weekend with all windows thrown wide open, and my back door propped open until 8pm.

My neighbours must think I'm insane, but why would you not want a flow of fresh air through the house? Am I the abnormal one here?

Bedroom all year round.

Other windows in the summer

Not got a clue what my neighbours do - I have never looked.

falain · 20/05/2024 15:46

Almost never. DH opens them sometimes in summer and I don't bother closing them. But if it was down to me I'd just keep them closed. Don't like dust and pollution blowing into the house, and insects coming in, and I don't want people on the street hearing our conversations. Or risk of burglary or kids climbing/falling out. We have 4 flights of stairs so I couldn't be bothered going around all the rooms opening the windows every day, or keeping tracknof which windows are open before leaving the house. I don't even go to the upper 2 floors some days.

Good old Mumsnet never fails to amuse.

Someone posts an observation that interests them, to chat about on, er... Chat, and the very first reply is asking why she is 'keeping such close tabs on your neighbours'. A couple of posters even manage to infer that the OP is judging other people for the actions that she finds interesting.

I suppose I should draw comfort from the fact that the majority of posters just join in the discussion in a chatty way.

(All windows open here until the bugs start coming in.)

We barely shut them; even in the winter they're kept on the slightly open latch. In fact, I discovered last November that my en-suite window no longer closes at all 🤷🏻‍♀️

Bedroom window open except in the coldest weather. Bathroom most of the day.
As soon as it's warm the conservatory door is open all day but not always with the door into the main house open.

Bedroom windows open all year round, in the winter I will open them for a bit to change the air.

We have an indoor cat and found some marvellous net screens to put up when we're indoors and want fresh air and don't want her outside on her own - she only goes out when we are out there.

Been a life changer being able to have open the front of the house windows downstairs and back as well and now we get a great breeze through front to back! knowing that she is still safe indoors.

Bedroom window left open for half an hour every morning even if there's snow outside, also always have quilt thrown back at same time to air the bed. Our house is old so tends towards damp if not kept warm and aired.

sp1ders · 20/05/2024 18:34

Ours are always open, even in winter. The only exception is the living room window in the winter, because it would let the heat out from the stove and we'd be cold.

thedendrochronologist · 20/05/2024 18:39

All the time! I love fresh air

I'm also in observant of people on my streets window opening habits. It's curiosity not nosiness. I think I have open more than anyone

Anyway yes have them open for the last few weeks. I Open them. He shuts them.

Went to friend and it was a balmy midsummer night - several years ago and she wouldn't have the windows open due to insects and dust. It's was roasting and stuff- I had to stand out side

@Arraminta ooo yes I also throw the quilt back for a while and let the bed air (I WFH)

Daily, my bathroom ones are open permanently even if we go on holiday (locked open). I would hate a smelly mouldy home
