How often do you open your windows?

I am very much a windows open person, and will always open my bedroom window in all weathers, even if it's just for an hour to rid the room of that musty sleep smell.

I moved house last year, and I've noticed that very few people on my street have their windows open. My next door neighbour on one side occasionally has their bedroom window ajar in the warmer months. One neighbour across the road has started opening one small upstairs window recently. My other ndn never has her windows open. Another house also has their windows firmly shut and blinds constantly closed! I know they're in, as I can see them coming and going. They must just live in darkness constantly.

Meanwhile, I was sitting over the weekend with all windows thrown wide open, and my back door propped open until 8pm.

My neighbours must think I'm insane, but why would you not want a flow of fresh air through the house? Am I the abnormal one here?

Every day, even through the winter. Can't stand nasty stale air. Our bedroom window is on the latch at all times as well, unless there's a proper gale.

longdistanceclaraclara · 20/05/2024 11:39

We are a windows open house, sleep with bedroom window open year round.

Got a flyscreen for the patio doors last year which has been amazing.

GoosieLucie · 20/05/2024 11:42

I'm another of the "every day, all year round" brigade. I open the bedroom windows every morning and close them at night, otherwise I'm often woken by noises from outside, usually foxes or owls - or other birds at dawn in the summer - but the bathroom windows remain open 24/7 in all but the coldest weather.

stayathomer · 20/05/2024 11:42

In Ireland and heard a rated houses- so the most environmentally friendly etc, don’t have opening windows!!! The thought of it makes me shudder!!! Saying that, sons have hayfever so battling my gut to open the windows as they had an awful few days last week

TheIceQween · 20/05/2024 11:44

I live in an ‘eco friendly home’ so it was built to be cool in the summer and warm in the winter. It heats up quickly and retains the heat.
Windows are open all day everyday. Even when the heatings on I like a nice draft of fresh air ⛅️

blackberryhill · 20/05/2024 12:44

In the warmer months, we open all the windows in the morning and they remain open for so long as someone is in the house. When it starts getting really warm out, we'll have the bedroom windows at the back of the house open until noon (when the back is shady) and then close them and pull the shades to keep the room from heating up too much in the sun.

Once it gets to the time of year when we're turning the heating on, I chuck all the windows open for when we get up in the morning for 10 minutes or so to let the musty overnight air out, and then close them all before we go shower/dress.

Every day as I used to live in a home that had no windows that could open and now I’ve moved it feels like such a luxury.

I used to have a cat in my old, old house who thought it was fun to try and climb out of the upstairs windows though and so I’d often just open them a slight crack.

I tend to open mine in the afternoon/evening and then close them in the morning or just before I go to bed.

So if you were to look at my home during the day time, then I doubt they’d be open unless I was home all day.

LauderSyme · 20/05/2024 14:22

Noticing whether the neighbours have their windows open or not isn't being creepily nosy, it's just a normal level of being observant and aware imo.

I'm with you OP, I love letting in fresh air and am surprised when all the neighbouring houses are tightly shut up on beautiful sunny days when they're definitely at home.

Every day, all year round.

can’t imaging never opening windows 😳

Same. Certainly bedroom window is open 24/7

Suchardchoccy · 20/05/2024 14:56

Every day. For a shorter time and not as wide in winter, but I still open them. On hot days I will open them in the morning and then when the sun starts getting hot, I shut all the windows and close the curtains to keep the rooms cool and then when the sun has gone in I open all the windows wide to let the cooler air flow.

This. I don't think it's a good idea to have your windows open on hot days when the sun is at it's hottest

If it's really hot it's better to keep windows shut and curtains close in the heat, then open up later to let the cooler air in

Westfacing · 20/05/2024 14:58

I'm an open window type of gal.

You don't need to be nosey to notice neighbours who never seem to have windows open - you can see things when you're out and about! Also based on MN threads over the years there are MANY people who don't/rarely open windows or curtains.

WorriedRelative · 20/05/2024 15:00

I hardly ever close my windows they in the locked but open a crack position 24/7 in all but the most horrendous weather.

gamerchick · 20/05/2024 15:01

Put the binoculars away OP Grin

I'll open mine for a blast but I don't keep them wide open or doors propped open because you end up with a house full of beasties. I end up with aphids on my chilli plants.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 20/05/2024 15:02

Every day and bedroom upstairs all night, all weather. Our blinds are shut at front too! However most of our house is at the back and we have large bright windows, rooflights & patio doors along back of house. Open daily and very light. Love to air the place.

Xenia · 20/05/2024 15:02

I sleep with the window open always but I don't leave downstairs ones open (a) because of burglars and (b) in very hot temperatures it will be cooler inside if you close the windows and the curtains in the day - it is going to be something we will all need to do particularly in the SE as things get hotter. I am very conscious of this today as we have outside painters for 4 weeks (bit house) and I close my home office curtains for privacy at the moment and it has been getting a bit cold as no sun coming in last week but today I am grateful for it as so hot outside. The poor painters are outside in the heat but at least have sun hats on and use the garage as a refuge and that is the coolest part of the house.

Also anyone with a small child don't leave widows open or said child might die. I was very upset to hear about that family whose small child fell to its death recently. however I could not understand how they could say they had complained ot the council for ages about a window - why tolerate that for even a single day and instead why not the first day you see it not working put whatever you can even 7 rolls of seletape on it to stop the child getting out.

GameOfJones · 20/05/2024 15:03

My morning routine is to turn down all the beds and open the bedroom windows just to air the rooms. In winter I'll shut them again once I've finished getting ready so they're only open for 15 minutes or so but in nice weather like at the moment they stay open all day. They only open a bit as we have safety catches on all upstairs windows since having DDs but I like fresh air.

Bathroom windows are open more often than not. They're definitely always opened for during a shower and then tend to just be left open unless I notice it's now chilly and close it.

I don't air the downstairs rooms as a matter of course, but in nice weather the patio doors are open for a large chunk of the day when someone is home.

AhBiscuits · 20/05/2024 15:05

I open mine whenever it's warm enough. I can't stand being cold.

Pettyman · 20/05/2024 15:08

Every day all year round and patio door open on warmer days. Some neighbours never open their windows or curtains. Bizarre

IncompleteSenten · 20/05/2024 15:09

Every day

Whatineed · 20/05/2024 15:12

I have those turn and tilt French doors in every room and a couple of skylights, so I tilt one open in every possible room in the morning when I get up, then close for the day when I leave for work.

In the summer they are closed all day, shutters closed all day to stop the heat and dust. Then opened when it's dark.

Fontainebleau007 · 20/05/2024 15:19

Every day. Blinds up, windows open.

Suchardchoccy · 20/05/2024 15:25

Yes if mine aren't open, they're on the lock.
The only problem with having your windows open in summer is flies, moths and especially wasps 😡

Theoldwoman · 20/05/2024 15:32

They stay open all year round. All of them. Close them if rain coming in, or going away.
