How often do you open your windows?

I am very much a windows open person, and will always open my bedroom window in all weathers, even if it's just for an hour to rid the room of that musty sleep smell.

I moved house last year, and I've noticed that very few people on my street have their windows open. My next door neighbour on one side occasionally has their bedroom window ajar in the warmer months. One neighbour across the road has started opening one small upstairs window recently. My other ndn never has her windows open. Another house also has their windows firmly shut and blinds constantly closed! I know they're in, as I can see them coming and going. They must just live in darkness constantly.

Meanwhile, I was sitting over the weekend with all windows thrown wide open, and my back door propped open until 8pm.

My neighbours must think I'm insane, but why would you not want a flow of fresh air through the house? Am I the abnormal one here?

Everyday. I sometimes just open them while I’m making the beds to get some fresh air in.

familyissues12345 · 20/05/2024 10:25

I always have windows open, even a crack. I hate feeling airless and feel it's much healthier to get fresh air! I know I'm abit weird though...

AlisonDonut · 20/05/2024 10:30

We now live in France and have insect screens on all the windows and the back door so all are open in the spring through to the first chill of the autumn.

However this year, still have yet to open them due to the freezing winds that are still blowing through every other day.

I have trickle vents open and the bathroom window is usually open to release steam from showers, but other than that no we never open them.

The moment we do we get massive flies in which buzz around and I then have to spend ages trying to get them out

You need fly screens. I have similar to stop my cat getting out of windows where I don’t want her to.
I have an absolute fly phobia so the screens do both jobs.

EmpressSoleil · 20/05/2024 10:41

My bedroom window is generally always open as I get night sweats. Except when I shut it to run the portable AC.
The rest of the house is variable. My house is old and retains both cold and heat (dependant on the weather). So if it's freezing cold, I don't open them as it will take an age to heat up again and cost me a fortune.
Likewise if it's hot, say above 25. They stay shut as the heat will just build and not go anywhere. In that scenario I often shut the curtains too. Doesn't help that I'm in the middle of London, in a really built up area. But then that also means the air coming in probably isn't all that fresh anyway!

ISeriouslyDoubtIt · 20/05/2024 10:42

I have windows which have 2 large opening windows either side and a small window at the top. The small upstairs windows are permanently open all year round in every room, in winter just a small amount and from spring to autumn wider. My bedroom has the big windows open on dry days and nights too, I love fresh air. Downstairs open the kitchen windows every day, close at night, other downstairs windows open on nice days, patio doors open all day in good weather like at the moment.
I hate a stuffy house. There's a certain smell in houses where no windows are opened. I've noticed that hardly any of my neighbours open their windows either.

AutumnBride · 20/05/2024 10:46

Depends on the weather, yesterday most windows plus the back door were open all day, because at least one person was in all day and it was sunny. Today is a bit chilly so just the toilet and bathroom and bedroom window's are open.

ColdInApril · 20/05/2024 10:47

Every day unless it’s the depths of winter.

We have neighbours who have never opened their windows or blinds in over 10 years. Their neighbour commented they never open the back ones either. They have a dog and I feel sorry for it as I think it deserves fresh air too - my cat likes to sleep near an open window.

My MIL had most of her windows painted shut. She never opened them anyway unless it was the kitchen one and she was forced to by steam. She didn’t want to open curtains either, just have lights on. The general atmosphere in her home was awful, I got sick almost every time I stayed. Turned out there was a massive damp problem they found after she died.

GasPanic · 20/05/2024 10:50

Some people seem obsessed with opening windows.

OK in the summer, but when the weather is freezing cold, no. Unless you like burning £5 notes.

Also if your neighbours have modern windows it may well be that they have trickle vents which supply all the ventilation they need.

All the houses round my way are modern and people tend not to open the windows much because they have trickle vents.

Floralnomad · 20/05/2024 10:55

If the heating is off then it’s likely the windows will be open but we have midge screens to stop bugs etc getting in

I have trickle vents on all my windows, but I don't feel like they really do anything. It's not the same as throwing the window open and feeling a lovely breeze come in. Smile

Every day.

DaisyChain505 · 20/05/2024 10:58

Bedroom window is open 24.7 365.

can’t imagine not having moving air in the room.

GotOnHerCutOffs · 20/05/2024 10:59

In nice weather the doors to the back of the house are open a lot so the dogs can chase each other around. We open windows in warm weather as we have air con units with hoses that need to go outside.

In cooler weather, we don’t open windows but doors are open at times for the dogs. House is fine.

ItWasntMyFault · 20/05/2024 11:00

Every morning for about an hour and longer in nice weather. I like to change the air

magicstar1 · 20/05/2024 11:00

The bedroom windows are open all year around. I love when it's snowing out and freezing cold, and I'm snuggled up under my duvet.

I work from home now, so have the back door open all day most of the year so the dog can run in and out. I only close it on really cold days.

2chocolateoranges · 20/05/2024 11:01

Winter my windows eg all bedrooms and living room open for 30 mins in the morning.

summer all windows open all day if we are home or open on security latch if we are working.

love the air getting through the house, my mil never opened her windows in case bugs got in and her house was really bad for condensation and mould in the bedrooms.

Openup · 20/05/2024 11:05

I’m with you OP, I have my windows open as much as possible. I’ve also noticed that none of my neighbours ever seem to open windows.

The stuff that mumsnetters judge other people on never fails to suprise me. Imagine having a superiority complex because you think you open your windows more than someone else.

so so weird.

Agree, it’s crazy it is written in a judgey way. Why would they possibly not live as I live 😂

Revelatio · 20/05/2024 11:27

I keep my back door closed in the summer. It leads onto the kitchen and I have having flies about, especially with the cat food in there.

To keep your house cool, it’s better to close all windows and blinds in the morning to keep the cool air in.

Blarn · 20/05/2024 11:27

I love an open window. Dh who does shift work with nights means our house at the front sometimes looks very shut up so dh can block out all the lovely sun and sounds of people enjoying it!

Edited for awful sentence structure!

Leah5678 · 20/05/2024 11:29

Permanently open. I live on a high floor in an apartment so don't have to worry about burglars as much though. Also balcony doors open over night in the summer.
No offence to anyone but the homes of people who don't open their windows always smell musty 🙈

I'm not judging anyone. It's only an observation. I didn't say "They must all be weirdo hermits and I bet their houses stink!" - that would be judgey.

All day every day, even in Winter.

Cannotbebothered19 · 20/05/2024 11:35

Only on warm days.
