How often do you open your windows?

I am very much a windows open person, and will always open my bedroom window in all weathers, even if it's just for an hour to rid the room of that musty sleep smell.

I moved house last year, and I've noticed that very few people on my street have their windows open. My next door neighbour on one side occasionally has their bedroom window ajar in the warmer months. One neighbour across the road has started opening one small upstairs window recently. My other ndn never has her windows open. Another house also has their windows firmly shut and blinds constantly closed! I know they're in, as I can see them coming and going. They must just live in darkness constantly.

Meanwhile, I was sitting over the weekend with all windows thrown wide open, and my back door propped open until 8pm.

My neighbours must think I'm insane, but why would you not want a flow of fresh air through the house? Am I the abnormal one here?

How on earth would you know, you cant see the backs of their houses anyway

Our windows are open all year, but you wouldnt know this, as they are locked open, just a crack, so they look closed, but they are actually open a few mil.

They stay like this all year, often need wd40 to make them work again as they get a bit stuck in position.

I like fresh air all the time.

BlackEyesLikeADollsEyes · 20/05/2024 09:36

Bedrooms windows are pretty much open 24/7.

Bathrooms windows tend to be open for most of the day.

Downstairs windows tend to be open almost all day in summer and closed in winter but opened for a few mins twice a day or so, to let fresh air in.

bows101 · 20/05/2024 09:36

My bedroom, kitchen, bathroom and one living room window is open all year round. No matter the weather, except if we are on holiday. My street also don't seem to open their windows much either.

OriginalUsername2 · 20/05/2024 09:38

Every day as soon as we’re up. They’re closed again when the house gets chilly in the evening.

TheChosenTwo · 20/05/2024 09:40

Our bedroom, bathrooms and toilets, my office windows are open pretty much 24/7 unless it’s really cold. Even then the our bedroom window will still be open just a tiny bit.
Kitchen bifolds are slid all the way open as soon as I wake up if it’s a warm sunny day like today.
I like fresh air flowing through the house. I will open ds bedroom windows once he’s gone to school and he will close them when he gets back. DDs have their windows open most of the time. I guess we are a fresh air house!

I’ve never notice what my neighbours do, I’ve just stuck my head out of my open window and can see a lot of windows open 😂

whyhavetheygotsomany · 20/05/2024 09:41

Why does it matter what all the neighbours are doing ? They arnt noticing what your doing guaranteed !

TammyJones · 20/05/2024 09:41

Isitchill · 20/05/2024 09:06

Every day. Just a few minutes in winter and more often in summer. Back door is often open on hot days.

Same.

Favouritefruits · 20/05/2024 09:43

I open my windows daily upstairs for the majority of the day in all weathers but I only open downstairs first thing in the morning got an hour then close them unless it’s boiling hot!

mewkins · 20/05/2024 09:44

Aquarelles · 20/05/2024 09:11

Haha, yeah I realise that comes across quite creepy. I'm not staring out at my neighbours 24/7. I just happen to notice that I very rarely see anyone elses windows open.

I noticed yesterday as I was sitting out in the garden and heard the neighbour slam her door shut every time she went in and out. I thought why not just leave the door open on such a lovely day?

Does she have a dog? I have my windows open all the time but keep the back door closed a lot as my dog runs outside and barks if she senses an ant has crossed the threshold into her garden.

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 20/05/2024 09:45

Front, side and back patio doors are opened every morning, along with my bedroom window. They'll stay that way all day unless it's particularly hot, cold or noisy outside.

nothingsforgotten · 20/05/2024 09:47

All day, every day, whatever the weather.

ShirleyPhallus · 20/05/2024 09:49

The stuff that mumsnetters judge other people on never fails to suprise me. Imagine having a superiority complex because you think you open your windows more than someone else.

so so weird.

BigDahliaFan · 20/05/2024 09:49

I open them every morning unless it's really windy...as they are crap old windows and can't stay open in the wind.

Then husband rushes round closing them as he's incredibly allergic to pollen - all year there's always something out.

But he's quite happy with the sliding doors at the back of the house being wide open ... for the dog.

Ereyraa · 20/05/2024 09:51

Every day. All the time from spring-autumn, and all windows are opened for 20-30 mins in winter to air the house.

SilverSimca · 20/05/2024 09:52

why not just leave the door open on such a lovely day?

Flies, cats (we have indoor guinea pigs) and the fact it makes doors slam in the house.

We probably open windows most days, in the winter to clear the condensation and in the summer to let in fresh air, but not wide open, and I have to say I haven't noticed whether neighbours do or not, apart from the neighbour opposite where I have noticed their attic window is wide open rain or shine.

Peonies12 · 20/05/2024 09:54

Our bedroom and the bathroom window are open almost all the time, other windows as needed. And maybe you need a hobby... I don't think I ever look at my neighbours' houses...

buffyslayer · 20/05/2024 09:58

Every day. One window is always open most of the day and evening

ILikePistachios · 20/05/2024 09:59

My bedroom window has been open since mid April, the rest get closed overnight but open all throughout the day

Ratfinkstinkypink · 20/05/2024 09:07

Every day, all year round

This

Ialwaysdomybest · 20/05/2024 10:00

I'm very much a windows open person.
I never have every window in the house closed, even if it's only the kitchen window on the crack.
I can't sleep with the bedroom window closed. On rare occasions I've had to close it because the wind has been so strong it has kept slamming shut and on these occasions I can't get to sleep and feel very aware of the lack of fresh air.

I must say when I'm walking about in residential areas I do notice if people have windows open. I must have a sad life because it actually gives me pleasure to see other open window households.

She has a cat, but it's not an indoor cat as it seems to like spending the majority of its evenings under the bushes in my garden! The poor thing was yowling for about 20 minutes yesterday to get in.

Bedroom and bathroom every day. How long they stay open depends on the weather.

Back door open most of the day because of our dogs going in and out.

Most of my neighbours don't even open their curtains let alone their windows. I can see 5 neighbour's houses from my bedroom and 4 of them never open their curtains.

I also walk my dogs at least twice a day (at different times) and can't believe how many houses have their curtains permanently shut. In fact more houses have closed curtains than open. Even my DH has commented on it.

I don't understand how so many people can live in houses that are dark/gloomy year round

CissOff · 20/05/2024 10:14

I’m not sure why so many people are accusing of being nosey OP.

My neighbour is the same - she lives on a corner plot before anybody says how can you see the back - and in the many years I’ve lived here, I’ve never seen a window or blind open. And she has an attic conversion, which must get so warm. She also has a dog. I’d imagine it’s very dark, oppressive and a bit doggy smelling inside.

She occasionally opens the French doors in really nice weather - but apart from than, nada!

I, on the other hand, have windows open all year around and am currently working with the bifold doors completely open.

Once you notice something, it’s hard not to unnotice it!

BouleDeSuif · 20/05/2024 10:16

Every day. I sleep with the window open every night of the year, and in the summer all the windows are open. I live in a second floor flat so I'm not worried about people getting in.

daffodilandtulip · 20/05/2024 10:18

Allll the time. My temperature is permanently about 950 degrees. The teens walk around in hoodies because apparently it's freezing.
