What holiday places do you consider to be 'posh?'

Apologies for the sort of TAAT, but the Caribbean thread got me thinking. I know this can be very subjective too, but what holiday destinations would you immediately think of as 'posh', as in exclusive and for wealthy people?

Lots of Indians I work with say that parts of Goa are being ruined by rich tourists visiting (both from India and internationally) so I think it’s changed a lot over the last few years.

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 20/05/2024 12:18

It’s a matter of cost.

I wouldn’t consider anywhere out of bounds to my ordinary self if I could afford it and accommodation was available to the paying public.

I know there are places favoured by a wealthier demographic that I have been to. Burnham Market , Places in Cornwall, S of France… they aren’t literally exclusive.

Wanttolikekimchee · 20/05/2024 12:25

Any place there are no loud obese British people in football shirts or with tattoos. Anywhere the menu isn’t translated into English.

I was probably in the wrong part but where we stayed it was fully of very chavvy Americans

@Clearinguptheclutter

I don't think it's about the place, more about the accommodation and how you experience where you are. All inclusive anywhere in the world wouldn't sound posh to me.

Two in Mexico just won Michelin stars

OccasionalHope · 20/05/2024 15:46

Klosters, and probably Switzerland in general, are only really posh in the ski season, I had a lovely holiday there one summer and it was cheaper than the following year in a less nice hotel in Torquay, and fairly unassuming.

Mustique, Necker and select parts of the Caribbean.

Bermuda.

Portofino.

Capri.

Private villa on Lake Como.

Parts of the south of France, eg Antibes.

Private safaris.

Luxury cruise lines.

Private chartered yachts, or of course your own.

The Cipriani in Venice.

The Ritz or George V in Paris.

Balmoral ;)

Your own or close friends grouse moor in Scotland.

And the other parts have been ruined by poor Indian and International tourists who spend next to nothing, want everything and leave their rubbish everywhere. As I said earlier I have lived there for many years for upto 9 months of the year and have no wish to go back.
Posh my arse, as Ricky Tomlinson would say.

Spaggybollynese · 20/05/2024 18:57

@penjil who is posher than the royals exactly?

NewMe2024 · 20/05/2024 19:04

Agree it is less about the country / region than the exact location or resort. However, general places I think of are St. Bart’s, Cannes, Monaco, Val D’isere, Dubai.

Apart from the grouse!

I feel like Scandinavian destinations are becoming posh. Some far-flung part of Norway. Or maybe that's more wanky middle class than posh.

I'll vote Balmoral for posh.

I'm working class from Barnsley and I have been to all sorts of places in Norway! It's my favourite country! I'm far from posh!

For those saying Cornwall, what is it exactly that makes it posh/wealthy? I know accommodation is very expensive, but is there anything else?

I'm in Cornwall and very close to Padstow/Rock. Rock has been the holiday destination for the wealthy for years. Big family owned houses, fancy golf club and sailing are a few of the pursuits for the well off that are available.

Meanwhile, 10 miles inland you've got Bodmin which is very down at heel. Its once thriving high street is now full of either empty shops or vape shops and barbers.

If you've got cash, Cornwall is a rich man's playground. Living and working here, not so much.

Lots of other British and European families look down their noses on the Windsors, so I heard on a documentary once.

Apparently, even the Spencers (Diana's family) thought not very much of them.

ChristmasLightsLover · 20/05/2024 20:29

I thought Morroco was posh. We went a couple of years ago. It was not posh. We got lucky to be at the very end of the beach in a Robinson hotel - most were similarly priced. Looking down the beach reminded me of Blackpool.

Lila878 · 20/05/2024 20:33

Zoopet · 20/05/2024 20:57

Southwold?!!
Lovely bu definitely not posh!

3WildOnes · 20/05/2024 21:13

Posh people I know were going to the Galapagos and Costa Rica a few years ago. Now Antarctica and Patagonia seem to be the place to be. Of course lots of long weekends away in the UK too. Scottish Highlands. South of France. Tuscany. Anywhere away from big resorts.
