What holiday places do you consider to be 'posh?'

Apologies for the sort of TAAT, but the Caribbean thread got me thinking. I know this can be very subjective too, but what holiday destinations would you immediately think of as 'posh', as in exclusive and for wealthy people?

Butlin's

Only if it's the skeggy one 😂😂

GentlemanJohnny · 17/05/2024 20:48

A private island anywhere.
A large private yatch somewhere warm.
Balmoral.

Octavia64 · 17/05/2024 20:53

Verbier
Klosters

We used to ski regularly as a family and usually booked self catering accommodation in a bargain French resort.

One year we got a lost minute deal on verbier and it was totally full of hooray Henries.

Really I mean it shows I'm not posh I'd think flying .that far and holidaying in and Indian ocean is quite posh.

Sorry @Mrsjayy , not having a pop, if it sounded like it. 😊 I used to look for the cheapest places I could.

I don't think it's about the place, more about the accommodation and how you experience where you are. All inclusive anywhere in the world wouldn't sound posh to me.

I’d agree with this. I think it’s less the place and more accommodation/what you do when you’re there.

Goa sounds like a posh person's holiday not a posh holiday. Like a gap yah or 'observing the poor' type holidays

Yes that's what I meant.

It isn't

The richest people I know all go to Cornwall or Norfolk. Bits of anywhere may be exclusive as in excluding the less wealthy, but I don't think anywhere is 'posh'. In the 80s, Klosters was THE place to ski, cruises for the rich or Necker Island or Mustique the celeb places to go on holiday, but money does not equal posh so now if you can afford it, the world is open to anyone.

BeaRF75 · 17/05/2024 21:20

"Posh" is a very downmarket word, thus suggesting nouveau riche type destinations.
If you mean "smart", ie for the Old Money wealthy, isn't North Norfolk in that category? Probably in a fairly shabby house that's been in the family for decades, taking long and brisk walks on the beach and (possibly) hanging out with the Waleses.
It's not how much money is spent, but how it is spent that us the main factor.

I feel like Scandinavian destinations are becoming posh. Some far-flung part of Norway. Or maybe that's more wanky middle class than posh.

I'll vote Balmoral for posh.

ohthejoys21 · 17/05/2024 21:28

St Barts and St Moritz.

Feckedupbundle · 17/05/2024 21:35

Jackson Hole
Burnham Market
Chamonix

This is very true.

French Riviera

Everywhere "posh" seems to be cheapened these days, even places in the Caribbean have package holidays to them. Same as the Maldives, people walking around in football shirts, etc.

Maybe someone who goes climbing in Patagonia might be posh. Posh hobby, posh destination. Keeps the chavs out.

But truly posh people don't consider the Windsors posh at all!

They look down upon them.

I agree posh is a contentious word, and only used it as it was on the other thread. Many of the "so incredibly MC" holidays I read about on MN are very ordinary to me. My very mediocre comp went on a yearly ski trip so I never think of it being for wealthy people (and yes I'm sure there's skiing, and there's skiing) and most of the people I know who go to the Caribbean are a bit rough so I certainly don't think of it as upmarket. SA, Rwanda or Antarctic certainly wouldn't come into my head either when I think of money or MC people.
The old money types I know go to granny's house for 3 days at a time (and it's usually not far away) and spend their time walking the dog.

"My very mediocre comp went on a yearly ski trip so I never think of it being for wealthy people"

How much was the trip, though? Could every family pay for their child to go if they wanted to? Was it subsidised and were there free places for low income families?

My secondary school did a ski trip and I couldn't go, my family didn't have the money to pay for it.

Most families can just about afford one summer holiday a year. Let's not pretend that ski trips are an ordinary thing for the masses.

I agree. I grew up in the middle of the mountains surrounded by ski resorts and many many families that live there can’t afford skiing. From the gear to the lift passes and classes, it’s expensive. And they don’t even need accommodation and get reduced ski passes.

I now live in England and most children at my DCs school (fairly MC) have never been to Europe skiing.

UnimaginableWindBird · 18/05/2024 11:35

Staying in their friend's/relative's place in wherever they are going to. Also small obscure places with bad weather and a small local population who behave as though they haven't noticed how rich/famous/ posh the visitors are.

AnotherEmma · 18/05/2024 12:38

It's true actually, my brother's partner is from a very wealthy family who own a holiday property and a ski chalet, so my brother and his partner often go there. Very wealthy people don't even need hotels as they own holiday homes (plural!)

That's OK don't worry it's interesting to hear that it isn't that expensive that flight through!

SuuzeeeQ · 18/05/2024 18:21

but isn’t there a difference between rich and posh? I worked for a v rich family, they had homes abroad, plus holidays every year in Courcheval, St Barths for Christmas and had their own yacht. They are very wealthy but definitely not posh in the English country old money title horsey sense. They would definitely not holiday in Devon or Cornwall.
