What holiday places do you consider to be 'posh?'

Apologies for the sort of TAAT, but the Caribbean thread got me thinking. I know this can be very subjective too, but what holiday destinations would you immediately think of as 'posh', as in exclusive and for wealthy people?

French Riviera, Marbella and the Hamptons

Wiglio · 18/05/2024 18:51

Salcombe

FishPie2 · 18/05/2024 18:51

Goa is now an absolute shit hole unless you stay somewhere like the Taj group of Hotels or the Leela in South Goa.
Not what I would call "posh" whatsoever - we used to spend anything upto 9 months of the year there and can't believe how bad everything is now.

Nw22 · 17/05/2024 19:28

kenya
st barts
salcombe or rock
north Norfolk
north east Corfu

Really? I've holidayed in 3 of those places and I 'm common as muck.

Aposterhasnoname · 18/05/2024 18:54

Goa has to be a joke, it’s the very opposite of posh.

"My very mediocre comp went on a yearly ski trip so I never think of it being for wealthy people"

How much was the trip, though? Could every family pay for their child to go if they wanted to? Was it subsidised and were there free places for low income families?

My secondary school did a ski trip and I couldn't go, my family didn't have the money to pay for it.

Most families can just about afford one summer holiday a year. Let's not pretend that ski trips are an ordinary thing for the masses.

I can't remember how much it cost, but my family could afford it and my mum was a single parent. That isn't to say everyone could afford it, but then again not everyone can afford a weekend in Butlins but that by no means makes it exclusive. Very ordinary people went on the trip, some from council estates who were most likely on benefits. That's why when I see threads on here about not being able to relate to others in university because "they are from the skiing set" it makes me laugh because I have gone skiing and I'm certainly not from a wealthy background.

Goa. I would think Is a posh holiday .

Hmm I would say it’s pretty accessible for Indian Ocean destination..

Onand · 19/05/2024 08:42

Antibes
St Barts
Mustique
Palm Springs

Clearinguptheclutter · 19/05/2024 08:49

The poshest place I have actually been to is probably Salcombe.

places that I think are posh but I’ve never been
-Swiss ski resorts
-Mustique
-Saint tropez
-probably some places in the Maldives but there will probably be a lot of somewhat less posh places there too

poshsnobtwit · 19/05/2024 08:52

For those saying Cornwall, what is it exactly that makes it posh/wealthy? I know accommodation is very expensive, but is there anything else?

OP posts:
Refillmerightnoe · 19/05/2024 08:59

I would automatically think French Riviera, St Barts, Norfolk too

kdramaqueen · 19/05/2024 08:59

Sailing in the Grenadines on a skippered charter
The St Regis hotel for skiing in Aspen
Any super luxury lodge on a private game reserve in South Africa
White Desert tour of Antartica

Does ‘posh’ exist any more? Anywhere is accessible to anyone if that have the money. And money doesn’t equal posh.

Also day trippers make even the formerly posh places, over run. See Rock, Salcombe, north Norfolk, Capri, Cotswolds, Venice, Hawaii, much of the Caribbean ( cruise ships).

I think hotels can be ‘posh’ much more than destinations. But even so, I’ve had a drink or a coffee in some terribly posh hotels and I’m far from high fallutin’

calimali · 19/05/2024 09:10

Hmmm 'posh' does not mean expensive.

Places like Il de Re in France seem to be full of 'old money' types.

In the US I think Martha's Vineyard is pretty exclusive.

IN the UK places where you can use your boat. The boating brigade tend to congregate around some of the very lovely coves of North Anglesey - not far from where Wills and Kate lived after they married.

I'm not at all posh, nor rich, and I spent a couple of nights in Monaco many years ago when I was a poor student. We stayed in the youth hostel and ate in McDonald's.

Yeah, agree with this. Having money doesn't mean posh.

I've been to Monaco and St Tropez and I am solidly working class. Also stayed in the Shard and the Ritz.

Lots of boats in Rock. Padstow has definitely become posher over the last few decades.

JellyComb · 19/05/2024 09:55

I agree with @UnimaginableWindBird I know some very wealthy, old money families. They all seem to holiday in each others villa in Tuscany/ private ski chalet / villa in Provence / old rectory in Burnham Market etc. None of them ever seem to pay for their accommodation and certainly never stay in hotels - even terribly expensive 5 star one, unless on business.

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 19/05/2024 10:11

I don't think the concept of holidays is 'posh' full-stop.

If you're genuinely upper class, you won't be working, so you can travel when you like rather than having specific vacation periods, and you'd probably have property overseas and friends overseas that you'd visit; as well as more than one property in your home country.

I suppose there is skiing, but even then the upper classes would think of it as 'going skiing' rather than 'going on a skiing holiday; and the younger ones would probably go 'travelling' in their gap year.

The Caribbean, Florida and other long-haul, expensive destinations are really for the monied middle class, not the upper class.

AllAtSeaAgain · 17/05/2024 19:13

Anywhere out of Europe, probably. With the exception of North Africa.

I mean there are some pretty exclusive resorts in Morocco...

therealcookiemonster · 19/05/2024 13:06

I don't think any particular place is posh. within any country there might be nicer areas/hotels that make it a more high end experience.

eg. you can go to the Maldives and stay in a cheap place or pay 4k per person per night for a very exclusive experience.

for me a one of a kind boutique hotel or villa in a beautiful place that offers personalised service and makes you feel you are home is a truly luxurious experience. and that can be in any destination. of course the really wealthy just hire/buy a whole private island and/or go round in their super yachts.

LeaveTheClocksAlone · 19/05/2024 13:20

Aspen, Colorado
