If someone tells you they enjoy holidays in the Caribbean, what do you think?

Do you think “snob” “posh” or “twit”

That they can take more heat than me and aren’t afraid of flying

It is far hotter in the summer in Southern Europe than in the Caribbean.

Thank you.

I mentioned to a colleague at work that I’d just booked a holiday for December. She asked me where and I said oh one of the Grenadine islands in the Caribbean. We love it there.

She said “God you sound like such a snobby posh twit”.

You should've replied saying "you sound like a jealous cow".

I've been on 2 Carribean holidays and thoroughly enjoyed both so I'm in your 'Posh, snobby twit club' too.

Deem acceptable? It’s a choice! The op asked what we’d think not what we’d say - people are perfectly entitled to chose what ever holiday they want, I don’t care! I don’t like beach holidays, not for me - I’m off to Wales this year and I’m guessing lots would find that cold, wet and dull and if they said that I wouldn’t care - I go where I want to, where interests me…it’s not a test, it’s meant to be fun and appeal to your interests. And those interests are quite different for everyone. My colleagues go to lots of different interesting places - they talk about their experiences when they come back - some places appeal and some don’t. 🤷‍♀️

Of course it's a choice, but in a previous post you said those didn't seem like reasons to choose it as a destination, it was the beach that people went for.

Your colleague is a dick.
My response would have been "oooh, nice!"
She sounds like she's got issues / jealous, ignore her.

That doesn’t make sense

Why doesn't it? If someone says "I enjoy holidays in the Caribbean" I'd take that to mean they go quite often...which to me sounds a bit boring because I like to go to different parts of the world and haven't been to many places twice (and FWIW I have been, enjoyed it)

catchthebeat · 20/05/2024 18:12

Just that they must be fairly wealthy (if this is a regular thing), or very good with money throughout the year so that they can save up for nice holidays.

I would love to go to Barbados for a holiday because it's where my grandparents are from, but can't afford it!

Redlorryyellowlorryblue · 20/05/2024 18:13

I think lucky them.

You do know that the Caribbean isn't one homogenous whole, don't you? They have different landscapes and topography (some islands are volcanic, some aren't). They have different cultures, different food/drink, different languages… It's a bit like saying 'oh yeah, I've been to South America, it was OK'.

Its holidaying not living though. The reasons for visiting will be simplistic .

Plenty of people go to "France" for better weather, French culture and better food. It matters not that Paris is fuck all like Nice or the Alsace is not the Dordogne. They do share better weather, French culture and a love of food. Or visitors that come to the U.K. often wanting history. Newcastle and Chichester are nothing alike but both have a ton of historical interest.

Violet17 · 25/05/2024 23:15

That they are fortunate

Catsmere · 26/05/2024 06:23

I'd think "they're not Mick Aston" - thinking of the Time Team trip to Nevis, where he said it was hot and sticky and apart from the snorkelling he didn't care for it. Tony called him a typical Black Country male, getting six days in the Caribbean and moaning about it. 😄

LaWench · 26/05/2024 06:35

Swingers. They love the hedonism hotel life with greasy fat Americans.

Or they just like travelling to tropical islands and have the money or debt to do so. I havent been to the Caribbean, I'd like to one day.

Bumblebee907 · 26/05/2024 07:24

😂

Hillcrest2022 · 26/05/2024 07:30

I think 'mosquitos'. The older I get the more I prefer the english coast for breaks where I can take my doggy !!

Startingagainandagain · 26/05/2024 07:56

I would just think 'good for you and I hope you have a nice time!'...

My work colleagues are regularly off on several holidays a year: Japan, Finland, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Canada, Sweden...

In comparison, I never go anywhere because I recently bought a house and all my money goes on that.

But I would not dream of feeling envy towards them.

I just think it is nice they get to go away so frequently. I am not fond of flying either so long distance travel is not something I enjoy doing anyway.

StoatofDisarray · 26/05/2024 08:33

None of the above. They like sunshine and the Caribbean. What's the controversy?

SleepyRooster · 26/05/2024 08:50

Put in those terms, "in the Caribbean " (rather than specific island) I'd think: retired couple, possible lushes, unimaginative

I’m sorry but that made me laugh, she’s envious and an arsehole to boot.

I actually think it's really reductive and kind of gross to reduce a whole civilisation and its people to the atrocities committed against them.

But @Engaea I'm not reducing the people of the Caribbean to slavery. I'm just saying that I'd feel uncomfortable sitting on a Caribbean beach sunning myself - that's all.

If I said I didn't want to have a picnic in the grounds of Auschwitz, I don't think you'd accuse me of reducing a whole people or civilisation to the Holocaust.

As I made clear in my post, I don't judge other people who holiday in the Caribbean; it's just not for me.

Shock
ssd · 26/05/2024 09:01

I'd think "lucky bugger"

Ariela · 26/05/2024 11:41

'Rather you than me, can't stand being hot/travelling for hours in a plane for a holiday'

LlynTegid · 26/05/2024 11:56

I think of the carbon footprint.
