Do you think “snob” “posh” or “twit”

I would think they were very rich and boasting.

really???

GentlemanJohnny · 17/05/2024 12:11

None of the above. The Caribbean's a big place. Some parts are downright cheap as chips.

Thank you.

I mentioned to a colleague at work that I’d just booked a holiday for December. She asked me where and I said oh one of the Grenadine islands in the Caribbean. We love it there.

She said “God you sound like such a snobby posh twit”.

how fucking rude.

as an side there are often ferries to other small islands for the day which is also a good shout if you fancy exploring.

Moier · 17/05/2024 12:14

My cousin and his wife are there now.. they go twice a year.
I'm just happy for them. They enjoy it
An holiday is always as cheap or expensive as you yourself can afford and want it to be.
I holiday on average 6 times a year.
What do you make of me?

Tara336 · 17/05/2024 12:16

I'd judge the person making the snob, posh, twit comment then someone going fo the Caribbean. What a horrible person they are to make that comment jealousy is such an ugly thing!

beAsensible1 · 17/05/2024 12:16

also petit martinque is gorgeous.

Chewbecca · 17/05/2024 12:25

Well we do always visit the local museums when in the Caribbean, in between snorkelling and cocktails, hopefully that ticks the culture box.
I don't think Caribbean is exclusively for the rich at all, you can fly for under £500pp and there is inexpensive accommodation to be had all over but it is never going to be a really low budget option.

Engaea · 17/05/2024 12:10

All the people like "oh not for me dear, I prefer culture," do you know how silly you sound. The Caribbean is not just a giant resort.

Can you share with us why you would go to the Carribean?

Well she sounds like a complete bitch.
I'm sure the Grenadine Islands are bloody fabulous. Don't let her piss on your parade.

Likewhatever · 17/05/2024 15:57

Quite shocked at the number of people who think that all there is to the Caribbean is beaches. One of the loveliest botanical gardens I’ve been to was on Nevis. And there’s so much history and culture, each island is so different. You could spend weeks on Grenada and still find things to do.

I have no time for travel snobs, we’re all tourists.

x2boys · 17/05/2024 16:01

Lucky them I have had one holiday in the carribean,it was lovely
Unfortunately i can't afford them now .

MotherofPearl · 17/05/2024 16:29

I actually think it's really reductive and kind of gross to reduce a whole civilisation and its people to the atrocities committed against them.

But @Engaea I'm not reducing the people of the Caribbean to slavery. I'm just saying that I'd feel uncomfortable sitting on a Caribbean beach sunning myself - that's all.

If I said I didn't want to have a picnic in the grounds of Auschwitz, I don't think you'd accuse me of reducing a whole people or civilisation to the Holocaust.

As I made clear in my post, I don't judge other people who holiday in the Caribbean; it's just not for me.

The difference being Auschwitz is one specific place, the Carribean is an entire set of islands. You can't compare one with the other.

MelifluousMint · 17/05/2024 17:18

Can’t believe someone is comparing a holiday to the Caribbean with a visit to Auschwitz

beatrix1234 · 17/05/2024 17:20

If they’re wealthy I think “tax heaven” and possibly hiding money, if they’re not I just think they enjoy lots of sun and crystal clear beaches.

Got to love mumsnet. 'or you go to Barbados? Just like Auschwitz'. Lol.

Any who OP she sounds like a bitch.

Good for them?

😂I've visited both and I have to confess that the similarities passed me by…

I'm not the poster you are addressing, but believe it or not the Caribbean isn't just a beach, it has people living there who belong to many different micro cultures, biomes, places of worship, types of food, local craft industries, which might be a few reasons why people might want to visit.

I never thought it was just a beach that would be a bit silly but it's the beach it's known for. Are the churches known to be particularly unique? Types of food - think that's anywhere. Local craft - tell us more? Micro cultures - like what? All the stuff you mention feels like oh and as well as the beach not destination reasons to visit.

The Caribbean is a network of countries, with different people and even religions. The culture of a Haitian who practises vodou can be vastly different from a Jamaican Christian or a Trinidadian Muslim. What sort of reasons do you deem acceptable for people to choose a holiday destination?

Edited

Deem acceptable? It’s a choice! The op asked what we’d think not what we’d say - people are perfectly entitled to chose what ever holiday they want, I don’t care! I don’t like beach holidays, not for me - I’m off to Wales this year and I’m guessing lots would find that cold, wet and dull and if they said that I wouldn’t care - I go where I want to, where interests me…it’s not a test, it’s meant to be fun and appeal to your interests. And those interests are quite different for everyone. My colleagues go to lots of different interesting places - they talk about their experiences when they come back - some places appeal and some don’t. 🤷‍♀️

Poddingtonpeace · 18/05/2024 08:46

I'm too broke and poorly to go to the caribbean. However, I am grown up enough to know that not everyone is like me.

Imagine what it would be like if everyone in the country went on holiday to the same place (shudders)?
