If someone tells you they enjoy holidays in the Caribbean, what do you think?

Do you think “snob” “posh” or “twit”

OP posts:
Beezknees · 17/05/2024 08:39

No, I would not think that. I've been to the Caribbean and I'm a working class single mum living in a council flat.

Westfacing · 17/05/2024 08:40

I think you were showing off a bit and can understand your colleagues reaction!

After all you started the conversation by saying you've just booked a holiday, which invites the question where are you going? So you can then boast about your love of The Grenadines.

ItsSerious · 17/05/2024 08:41

I wouldn't really think anything. Definitely not "posh"!

NettleTea · 17/05/2024 08:43

I think that I love holidays to the caribbean, but I had a friend who rented and ran a tiny guest house who I stayed with and did some work for, and at the time you could get real bargain flights to st Lucia for about £200 quid. I liked the weather, I liked the beach, I loved the vibe. I hated the resorts. It was a cheap option for me and i really miss it

@OceanStorm well I am off to Japan in September I am expecting it to be a lot different to the Caribbean and much more interesting😃
For me holidays are learning about new places, cultures, lifestyles , seeing things. Dont get me wrong I love a gorgeous beach, snorkling and cocktails so the odd Caribbean island wouldn’t go a miss but not every year. Or combine it. I did one trip where we did Mexico, Guatemala and Belize (if you count Belize as the Caribbean) that was great as I appreciated the relaxation after climbing all those Mayan temples and visiting sites

Sorry but Japan is the latest tourist trend destination, hardly like you’re going to Outer Mongolia. Plenty of culture/food/new places to be had in the Caribbean beyond just lying on a beach or snorkelling, not that there’s anything wrong with that either.

DrFoxtrot · 17/05/2024 08:53

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 17/05/2024 06:47

It's not the destination that would bother me it's the 'we love it there' that sounds smug and entitled.

Definitely this! It makes it sound like you go all the time and that could be perceived as boasting.

As there are many people living in the Caribbean there is definitely culture to explore and a very interesting one at that. Some people who go decide to do the big resorts but on many islands there are not as many resorts and people tend to stay self catering and explore

nothingsforgotten · 17/05/2024 09:09

Why on earth would anyone think "snob", "posh" or "twit"? I certainly wouldn't, and I can guarantee someone from here has to spend a lot more money to holiday in the Caribbean than they would if they lived in the UK.

Puravida23 · 17/05/2024 09:09

Actually @OceanStorm not sure if you were asking for ideas but for a similar budget to the Caribbean. Holidays that I have loved include. Costa Rica (still get your Caribbean coast but with a lot more to see) , Road trip South Africa, Tanazanian Safari, 3 weeks China, South East Asia (lived there for a couple of years so seen most of it Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia all great) Road trip America, Canada.
@YaWeeFurryBastard I have been to China not outer Mongolia though. Not sure I fancy it. I am not sure if my post was misread . I am not anti Caribbean I would think the same if someone told me they holiday in Thailand every year , I just think with big holiday budgets I would personally do different things but lots of people I know like to go to where they like over again nothing wrong with that especially if you have busy lives and short holidays. Sorry if I have offended all the repeat Caribbean visitors.

nothingsforgotten · 17/05/2024 09:12

Oh I've just read your update OP. Your colleague is simply jealous, ignore her and have a wonderful time in December.

LadyLazlo · 17/05/2024 09:13

What? No! Definitely not! Other people's holidays are not really my concern. I might say "ooh lucky you, lovely!"

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 17/05/2024 09:43

Please share exactly where you went, I want a holiday like this next year.

And to answer your question I'd think "lucky!" and be insanely jealous.

penjil · 17/05/2024 10:40

It depends where in the Caribbean.

Each island has its own different feeling, cost and outlook.

You can get TUI package holidays to St. Lucia and Jamaica and Aruba.

If they went to St. Kitts & Nevis or the Cayman Islands, then that's more upmarket and very expensive.

Dominica is small, and poor and volcanic and not very well to do.

Martinique and Guadeloupe are French, so I'd be impressed if they went there that they could speak the language.

It depends on the island and where they stayed. You can get cheap self-catering apartment rentals for £70 a night....I did that in Barbados.

taxguru · 17/05/2024 10:41

None, I'd just think they like holidays in the Caribbean.

IvyGrippedtheSteps · 17/05/2024 10:42

I would think ‘You have very different taste in holidays to me’, but not give it a further thought.

OhshutupBrenda · 17/05/2024 11:09

Sashikocheck · 17/05/2024 06:45

Nothing really - maybe slightly unimaginative, not my thing.

😂

Worldwide2 · 17/05/2024 11:11

I enjoyed my holidays in the Caribbean so I would think they must have enjoyed theirs too

EnglishGirlApproximately · 17/05/2024 11:12

Reading this I'm surprised people think that the Caribbean only has beaches and cocktails to offer! Every island has it's own culture and personality and there's plenty to see and do beyond the beach. You can't really put Jamaica, Aruba, St Barts and Dominica together and think they're all alike surely?

mrspaulhollywood · 17/05/2024 11:43

Lots of people can't afford to go there once let alone make it their regular holiday destination, but it's not snobby unless you are a snob and sound like one 😂

Bunnyannesummers · 17/05/2024 11:47

LongSinceGotUpAndGone · 16/05/2024 20:54

That they enjoy holidays in the Caribbean.

This

poppymango · 17/05/2024 12:03

Ephme · 16/05/2024 21:12

Thank you.

I mentioned to a colleague at work that I’d just booked a holiday for December. She asked me where and I said oh one of the Grenadine islands in the Caribbean. We love it there.

She said “God you sound like such a snobby posh twit”.

Your colleague sounds bitter, rude, and very unkind.

Enjoy your holiday, it sounds beautiful.

Engaea · 17/05/2024 12:08

MotherofPearl · 16/05/2024 21:16

I wouldn't think any of the things you've suggested OP.

I personally would feel slightly odd going on holiday to the Caribbean because I know quite a lot about the history of transatlantic slavery, and for me sitting on a Caribbean beach, sunbathing and sipping cocktails, would be the same as having a jolly picnic in the grounds of Auschwitz: I just wouldn't be able to enjoy it.

But I fully accept that most other people don't share my (maybe strange!) view about this, and don't judge them for enjoying Caribbean holidays.

Whilst I agree that you should be mindful of the history I actually think it's really reductive and kind of gross to reduce a whole civilisation and its people to the atrocities committed against them.

rainbowstardrops · 17/05/2024 12:09

OppsUpsSide · 16/05/2024 23:53

That they can take more heat than me and aren’t afraid of flying

Same!

CharlotteLightandDark · 17/05/2024 12:10

I also thought this was off the back of the husband going to Thailand thread and was about sex tourism for middle aged white women.

Engaea · 17/05/2024 12:10

All the people like "oh not for me dear, I prefer culture," do you know how silly you sound. The Caribbean is not just a giant resort.
