Do you think “snob” “posh” or “twit”

OP posts:

That they enjoy holidays in the carribean

This ^ most of the time but could think something different depending on circumstances.

TreetopWrappingArea · 16/05/2024 21:58

On your OP I wouldn't think anything really. I already assumed the Caribbean is a great place to holiday. But the exact phrasing you say you used 'oh one of the Grenadine islands in the Caribbean, we just love it there'. Does sound very privileged and tin eared - you are presenting what would be the holiday of a lifetime to most people as casually as your favourite cafe. How often do you go?

OutOfTheHouse · 16/05/2024 22:02

It would rather depend on the context. If you were chatting about holidays and the colleague had said she’d managed to scrape together enough to take the kids to Pontins for the weekend and you looked down your nose and said ‘we prefer the Caribbean’, then she’d have a point.
But otherwise she is the arse.

This made me laugh so much

acrossthebeach · 16/05/2024 22:10

None of those. I'd just think they're a bit dull and lacking imagination because it sounds like they enjoy going to the same place on repeat.

SparkyBlue · 16/05/2024 22:10

Take no notice OP. Unless you said it in a really patronising way they were being an idiot. Holidays are such a personal thing and some people consider a hotel as just somewhere to rest their heads and others love a really nice hotel. You even see it on here all the time, some people can't accept that others like different holidays to them and might spend less on other things in life and spend more on a holiday and vice versa. I've a five year old who is obsessed with mini discos and kids clubs and another DC with asd so holidays need to be 3hours max flight time and from our local regional airport but I love beach holidays so I'd personally ask you all about it and be dying to hear about it.

Thepatioisready · 16/05/2024 22:18

I think it's probably a comment of the way you said it rather than you being off to Caribbean itself.

People don't really use that sort of language ( ie calling someone a twat) in a professional capacity if they actually mean it properly surely?

Pollipops1 · 16/05/2024 23:06

That doesn’t make sense

HerRoyalNotness · 16/05/2024 23:10

I’d just think oh nice. Wish I could go, I like it too.

IamSlave · 16/05/2024 23:43

I would think they are extremely lucky they didn't end up on that Caribbean holiday mentioned here once which included endless rain and singing violent rap songs.

Frangipanyoul8r · 16/05/2024 23:51

I would think “where exactly is the Caribbean, I really should know this… note to self, look up Caribbean on google maps later”

OppsUpsSide · 16/05/2024 23:53

That they can take more heat than me and aren’t afraid of flying

Chewbecca · 16/05/2024 20:57

Well I definitely enjoy holidays in the Caribbean. What do you think of me?

I like them mainly because I like to escape our winter weather and I love to swim in the ocean, Caribbean is perfect for that.

I would think that you are rich

OuijaBoard · 17/05/2024 00:12

Is your colleague automatically jumping to the opinion that Grenadines = Mustique, and envisioning you hanging out with Mick Jagger and the ghost of Princess Margaret? Of course, the fact that you can afford a trip at all means you have a bit of disposable income, but the Grenadines in general aren't even necessarily a relatively expensive destination.

Delphiniumandlupins · 17/05/2024 03:03

Add me to the list of people googling "Caribbean holidays".

RogueFemale · 17/05/2024 03:17

I know many consider this type of holiday destination as desirable; Insta-worthy and popular with celebs, - I don't think of them as posh, but as rather desolate and superficial. So, I suppose I'm snobby in the opposite way. I'd much rather go to an unpopular bit of Greek coastland and for a fraction of the cost.

I agree. Caribbean doesn't appeal to me.

JaninaDuszejko · 17/05/2024 05:47

God you sound like such a snobby posh twit

Think that says more about your colleague than you. You can like different kinds of holiday and say so without it being an insult.

I’ve only been to the Caribbean once. To the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico.

Had a great two weeks, hired a car, going to different Mayan ruins, jungle walks, swimming in cenotes and lagoons, nature tours in a bioreserve. Didn’t find any of it desolate or superficial.

I think your knowledge of what the Caribbean has to offer isn’t as good as you think it is. There’s a lot more to it than an all inclusive beach holiday, though if that what someone wants fair play to them.

Backtothepalmtrees · 17/05/2024 06:00

I’d think they’ve got a few Bob.

Heatherbell1978 · 17/05/2024 06:02

I'm not posh but I don't automatically associate it with 'poshness'. I'd just think 'oh that's nice' and try and rack my brains on what places are actually in the Caribbean! I guess it's like saying I'm going to the Mediterranean - well yes but whereabouts?

Funny enough I really fancy a cruise and was looking at some amazing itineraries around there which aren't wildly out of our budget.

VashtaNerada · 17/05/2024 06:03

I’d assume they had family there. Everyone I know who holidays in the Caribbean is visiting family. I don’t think I know anyone who would choose it as a holiday destination otherwise, maybe it’s a class thing.

camelfinger · 17/05/2024 06:11

I’ve never been, so I’d probably ask them some questions about which islands they go to, whether they do cruises and the sorts of activities on offer. Also what kind of food is available and do you have to go all inclusive or explore a bit.

60andsomething · 17/05/2024 06:13

Ephme · 16/05/2024 21:12

Thank you.

I mentioned to a colleague at work that I’d just booked a holiday for December. She asked me where and I said oh one of the Grenadine islands in the Caribbean. We love it there.

She said “God you sound like such a snobby posh twit”.

well, it is not ok for a work colleague to speak to you like that
