Should I wake my lodger? Hasn't turned up for work

Noodge · 09/05/2024 09:07

My lodger works in a nursery and starts around 07:30.

Her boss has messaged me this morning to ask me to get her to get in touch as she hasn't turned up for work.

I actually heard lodger getting up this morning, but then I went back to sleep.

Is it my business? I'm inclined to think not but then, if she's accidentally slept in she might appreciate me waking her up? I've only just seen the message so she's already very late.

Boss knows who I am as we're both in the same social group.

WWYD?

If this is unusual for her I’d assume she’s ill and needs the sleep

If it isn’t unusual then you don’t want to get involved!

Either way I’d leave her, pass on the message when she wakes up

zzplea · 09/05/2024 09:10

Knock on her bedroom door and check that she's ok.

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 09/05/2024 09:11

Wake her up.
The employer has duty of care for all employees during work time. If a person doesn't show up for work the responsibility is on the employer to ensure that they have not fallen under a bus/ been admitted to hospital/ murdered in the night (Suzy Lamplugh!)
Added to that there are the children in the nursery who need to be cared for, and other staff who are covering for the missing staff member.

HaystackHair · 09/05/2024 09:11

I don't see why you wouldn't knock.

Cbljgdpk · 09/05/2024 09:12

I’d check in on her and ask her in future what she’d rather you do if it happens again.

Orangemangogrape · 09/05/2024 09:12

She could have meningitis. You should check.

OrlandointheWilderness · 09/05/2024 09:12

Why has her boss messaged you?! That seems a little odd!
I'd just knock and see if she is okay.

Stainglasses · 09/05/2024 09:13

May as well knock since you’ve been asked but it’s an annoying situation where your lodger’s employer has your number

Hadalifeonce · 09/05/2024 09:13

If you heard her get up earlier, do you even know if she is in her room?

Takeaways · 09/05/2024 09:13

I would check that she's okay and doesn't need help. Maybe they just fell back asleep but people can get seriously ill quickly.

TheTimeTravellerswifeisaFraser · 09/05/2024 09:16

Knock on her door and check she’s ok. Tell her her boss messaged you worried about her because she was late for work.

JayJay514 · 09/05/2024 09:17

I would check- she may have slept in unintentionally or be ill.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 09/05/2024 09:17

Why wouldn't you just bang on the door and check she's okay? She has either slept in or mixed up her work days.

Noodge · 09/05/2024 09:17

Thanks all. I'm of the 'non of my business' camp by nature but yes, she could be ill. Apparently her phone is off and one member of staff has been around and knocked. I don't think they have?! Because I'd have heard that and I have a huge dog who'd have barked.

Boss doesn't have my number, but she has me on fb so she messaged.

I'll go and knock on her room.

I’d check she’s ok. If she’s poorly you could bring him some toast and a drink. If she’s slept in she’ll be grateful you knocked.

fieldsofbutterflies · 09/05/2024 09:21

I personally don't understand why you wouldn't knock in those circumstances. It's not really "none of your business" when you've chosen to live with this person and to have them in your house.

Yes, just basic human care and concern.

She could have meningitis. You should check.

Or a hangover
Or a splinter
Or bangret
Or she could have just said feck it and gone back to sleep. 🤷‍♂️

I would check, she lives with you so presumably you're on somewhat friendly terms.

SheepAndSword · 09/05/2024 09:30

I'd just check quickly by knocking

Pennyandolive · 09/05/2024 09:33

i think it’s just basic human care to knock and check if she’s okay.

KikiShaLeeBopDeBopBop · 09/05/2024 09:50

Absolutely check but I think it's inappropriate for the boss to contact you like that, unless you're down as an emergency contact.

Also inappropriate for another member of staff to come & knock on the door.

Hope your lodger is OK!

BlunderMifflin · 09/05/2024 09:52

It's been half an hour since you went to check on her but haven't come back to update us. (I know, I know! None of our business)
Hope everything's OK

Maybe they don't have an emergency contact. Or if they do, it's their parents that they know live 200 miles away, but that the lodger lives with the OP, so far more likely to answer the 'is this person skiving off or have they fallen under a bus' question.

But it is appropriate to contact someone straight away when a person fails to arrive at work on time. You hear stories about people laying injured for days because they've slipped in the shower and can't get up but no-one has checked that they're OK.

But this wasn’t an emergency, so I agree it was inappropriate for the lodger’s boss to contact OP.

SheepAndSword · 09/05/2024 10:02

@Bjorkdidit I honestly don't know who I would put as an emergency contact now.

Perhaps next door or one of my friends. If anyone has seen docu-drama dreams of a life Joyce Carol Vincent I think she put her bank manager.
