If a conservative voter doesn't vote, can they still be a conservative voter? Surely that makes them non-voters.
Also, if your party isn't appealing enough to get your traditional voter base to the ballot box, why on Earth would "stick with the plan" get them out for a GE?

Tomorrow’s DM front page is a whole lesson on media manipulation and how what is not reported being just as important as what is. It’s amazing.

Its in the interest of the Rothmeres (owner) to do that.

cakeorwine · 05/05/2024 09:07

Why is Braverman on?

IClaudine · 05/05/2024 09:09

So Braverman wants Sunak to move further to the right?

IClaudine · 05/05/2024 08:34

That BBC article is quite hilarious.

the pundits' calculators suggested that if the whole country had voted on Thursday 😅, the gap between the Conservatives and Labour comes out at 9%: not, theoretically, an insurmountable gap to close when the general election campaign is miles away and could bend the curves.

One cabinet minister said that after months of "frothing at the mouth about apocalypse actually, maybe we could have a hung parliament.😅 This will encourage people to believe there is a fight worth having."

mmmmm pre results, the TV pundits opinion was anything less than a tory loss of 400 would mean its ok for the Tories, then it became 500.... now its a calculation based on 100% voter turn-out (the norm would be around 66%)

Moving goalposts springs to mind and certainly this is NOT unbiased media reporting, they are playing the tory tune.

IClaudine · 05/05/2024 09:11

Fucking hell, Braverman ranting.

newnamethanks · 05/05/2024 09:12

She's on to explain that the party has changed and people don't like it. She is not, however, admitting that she is a big part of the cause of the change that people don't like nor are we greatly enamoured of her in person. I expect that's the fault of Jeremy Corbyn.

cakeorwine · 05/05/2024 09:13

Braverman suggests going more right than they are now.

Zonder · 05/05/2024 09:14

IClaudine · 05/05/2024 09:09

So Braverman wants Sunak to move further to the right?

But it's ok, she's going to fight and she's going to speak the truth! Well that'll make a change.

Zonder · 05/05/2024 09:14

cakeorwine · 05/05/2024 09:13

Braverman suggests going more right than they are now.

Of course, and the evidence for that is the loss of votes because of not being far right!

BIossomtoes · 05/05/2024 09:19

IClaudine · 05/05/2024 08:47

It is so wrong to have something so partial on the BBC website. Does anyone know how that 9% figure was reached?

Edited

I think it’s from John Curtice.

Jason118 · 05/05/2024 09:28

Oh dear @prettybird I appear to inadvertently have purchased some whisky. I blame you entirely. Grin

DuncinToffee · 05/05/2024 09:31

Here you go, a short Braverman clip

https://x.com/Haggis_UK/status/1787035797150953502

Watch Suella Braverman spit her dummy out.

"Keir Starmer has the charisma of a peanut... Labour is a party of hard left maniacs, who would undo brexit, who would open our borders & who would indoctrinated our institutions & schools with PC madness.. "

Really? Oh that is a bit worrying.

newnamethanks · 05/05/2024 09:36

Thanks Duncin, there she is in full spate. She has the same narrowness of vision as Truss. I hope the voters of Fareham boot her out but given her party held the council, I'm not convinced it will happen. Fingers 🤞 though.

BIossomtoes · 05/05/2024 09:37

IClaudine · 05/05/2024 09:32

Really? Oh that is a bit worrying.

It’s based on 100% turnout which we know will never happen. I think it’s quite helpful actually because the last thing we need is for people to get complacent and not vote. I find the predictions of electoral Armageddon for the Tories more worrying in case people think they don’t need to get themselves down to the polling station.

IClaudine · 05/05/2024 09:38

Ah, here is where that figure is from, but Curtice seems to put a very different spin on it and concludes Tories in deep trouble. Phew!

Actually, you are right. The Tories attempting to spin in this way may have an unintended consequence for them!

Which is obviously why those far right parties such as the Lib Dems and Greens made massive gains.

Well exactly. Suella knows.

BIossomtoes · 05/05/2024 09:46

That rant is hilarious. As a poster to the X thread says, she’s writing the Labour campaign materials for them.

medianewbie · 05/05/2024 09:49

Indeed. SB is an idiot & a particularly unpleasant one but complacency is dangerous so if Labour want to pick up more of the seats the Tories lost then they might want to look at their messaging re Women & re Gaza before a GE.
(these are the things that I struggle with re voting for Labour so others might?)
I for one wonder if an old style Lib/Lab pact might be ok (but I'm just too young to remember how the last one went so prob need to get off here & research!)
Of all options I'd be most happy with a July election & Starmer in power though.
However, I live in Scotland & am about to 'enjoy' 2 more years of SNP Swinney.

medianewbie · 05/05/2024 09:51

Just watched the SB clip. Oh dear ...

She just wants to be leader. That is all this is for. I agree Labour shouldn't be complacent, but it looks like voters are very angry at the Conservatives. They are less popular than a year ago. Even when Sunak trims all his policies to the right, policies like Rwanda that he did not actually agree with when he was Chancellor, he and they don't do better. They are doing worse. They have just given large NI cuts. This seems to be making no difference either. This is all they have left. People will be turned off that too.
