What a good day for the government!

BBC news website has that as breaking news at the bottom of the page and the local election results at the top.
In the middle is a picture of Starmer in Blackpool!

What a great day!

When is the London result due come in?

Speaking of London, that goon Laurence Fox is being investigated by police for posting an upskirting photo of a TV presenter. I don't think he took it himself, not sure who did.

Did I hear the London results are due on Saturday? I seem to have memories of the mayor result happening detached from the rest and unaccustomed weekend vibe!

(I still think of the London and regional mayors as recent things. Was mentioning Frank Dobson as I went to vote)

BREAKING: The High Court rules Rishi Sunak's climate plan is unlawful, in major victory for green groups.

The campaigners argued that Grant Shapps signed off the government's climate plan to reach Net Zero without any evidence it could actually be achieved.

That was the main issue that led to Youseless dumping the Greens in Scotland (& the cataclysmic - for him - outcome). An enormously ambitious energy target with no solid funding behind it & no evidence it could be achieved (like many SNP plans, a good idea but horribly executed & built on back of fairy money).
(of course the other big issue was to do with the Cass report fall out but we are not allowed to talk about that). I did notice one tv guest speaking about how good it was for Labour that the SNP are imploding (as John Swinney will be a disaster too - he barely survived a VONC for his time as 'education' minister, plus a 2nd for 'treating Holyrood with contempt' (2021). The TV guest seemed to think that for every SNP vote lost the Tories pick up 1 but Labout pick up 5?
Happy Days... (very jealous the English get to vote later this year & we still have 2 more years of criminal incompetance up here)

I am furious at he BBC for the way they have framed the answer to a question on their news Quiz of the Week. I haven't put the question and some of the answer, in case anyone esle does it but it's this bit:

Mr Yousaf announced he was standing down after ... days as first minister. He said the way he dealt with the Greens "clearly caused upset and therefore I've paid the price of that" but that it had been the right decision. Mr Yousaf intends to remain in office until a new SNP leader is named. Donald Dewar lasted 513 days in the role.

Donal Dewar died in office! They don't even mention this!! I , along with many many Scots loved Dewar and this is pretty low. Lasted ? LASTED ??

(sorry, going back over thread as have been away for days)
Yes, thatss very disrespectful of the BBC. Dewar was an excellent politician.
Far better than the current mob. Swinney is a complete fool. 2 more years... Ugh.

BestIsWest · 03/05/2024 11:38

Houchen had a massive majority though. I heard someone say that if he lost it would be akin to the Tories being left with 3 or 4 seats in a GE.

I don't that's unexpected but will be interesting to see a breakdown of votes.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 03/05/2024 11:45

In terms of seats, the Tories are now running in 3rd place behind the Lib Dems.

YouGov predicted a 51%-44% in favour of Houchen

Yeah early speculation last night was Labour saying Houchen too big a majority to gain. But Andy Street too close to call.

Wonder how much the Tories will promote Houchen win as a "good result". Or will it be swept away in talk of everything else? What's Sunak response? What's the party response? Now we shall see after the speculation. Obviously, he could well do nothing.

DuncinToffee · 03/05/2024 12:01

Sunak seems to be in hiding, expect him to pop up when the TV result is announced shortly

I just read that an 18 year old won the Labour seat in a Peterborough Ward, didn't we have a poster whose young son was standing for the Green Party?

Looking ahead to the next GE, what's striking about the patterns we're seeing is that Labour is taking a beating in some (mostly urban) areas, perhaps due to Gaza.

But these are almost all in safe Labour seats.

Meanwhile, huge advances in marginals (and safe Tory territory):

This seems to fit with something I saw much earlier that suggested that Labour could lose a huge proportion of the Muslim vote but because it’s mostly concentrated in safe Labour seats it would cost them about 3 seats. Which really isn’t much of a worry for them given the gains they are making elsewhere.

I’m sure Kuenssburg will be saying what a terrible night it is for Labour as they win a landslide GE victory.

IClaudine · 03/05/2024 12:11

Andrea Loathsome on telly, saying Labour has "nothing to be smug about". Tee hee.

It would be unwise to talk up Houchen given the scandals that surround him.

If Loathsome says they don't, then more than likely they do.

Given the surge of votes for Labour, Lib Dems and Greens, can we assume that the knowing what a woman is fraternity have gone into meltdown?

What’s the swing? That’s a smaller majority isn’t it?

cardibach · 03/05/2024 12:34

Ooo down from 73% of the vote to 54%. Labour up 14%, Houchen down 19%. Swing of 17%
