Making a new 70s playlist for Spotify, but lacking inspiration. If I Google best songs from the 70s I just get lots of good big hits, which are not always, y’know, good music.

So far I have some Bowie, Led Zeppelin, The Jam, The Police, Cat Stevens, Fleetwood Mac, The Jacksons, Siouxsie, The Clash and others.
looking for good songs of all genres, forgotten gemsâ€Ļ even cheesy pop if it’s good.

What are your 70s favourites? 🙂

Amazing OP. THANK YOU

candycane222 · 03/05/2024 22:09

OMG @Littledidsheknow I absolutely love it!!! Playing right now! Thank you soooooo much 🤩🤩

candycane222 · 03/05/2024 22:15

I don't know if any other decade containd such a breadth of creativity and styles though. The decade started when I was barely a teen and when it ended it seems music had moved as far as I had.

What an epoch!

Glad people are enjoying the playlist! I'll endeavour to add all suggestions to it in the coming days.

@candycane222 the depth, variety and progression in musical style was amazing in the 70s. It was only whilst compiling this playlist that I realised the The Beatles and OMD had hits in the same decade! đŸ¤¯

Anything by Bread.. David Gates voice is like velvet...
Love 10cc... I feel they were underrated..
Albums like How Dare You contained brilliant lyrics

Loved Leo Sayer too.
I went to a small concert in my local town thinking oh yeah, he had a few hits.. wow, every song he sang .. I knew and there were soooo many.

VeganFromSveden · 04/05/2024 01:56

A fun one
Telephone Man by Meri Wilson

Littledidsheknow · 04/05/2024 08:22

Leonard Cohen!! How could I forget Leonard Cohen? Why did no one mention him? Jeez. I’m going to add a little smidge of LCâ€Ļ

â€Ļ and Bread. Had overlooked them, too. Will definitely add a song or two.

In two minds about Telephone Man! I remember it bugging the heck out of me as a child. There are another couple of songs that I mentally put in a similar category: Hello this is Joni, and Car 67; they didn’t make the cut!

Thanks for your continued suggestions, everyone. Love my huge playlist.

Haven’t read every single post so may have missed it, but has anyone mentioned sad cafes everyday hurts

Pintoo · 04/05/2024 11:14

Funnily I didn't think of Leonard Cohen as 70s because I only discovered him in the 90s. He merits a playlist all on his own. It would be very hard to pick a favourite LC but looking at tracks actually released in the 70s mine would be Chelsea Hotel or Who by Fire.

ABBAsBiggestFan · 04/05/2024 11:15

Anything by The Jam. Paul Weller is a songwriting genius.

Dash1863 · 04/05/2024 11:49

Has someone mentioned "Convoy"? I guess that could go into that category. I did love it though as a kid 😁.
Also Charlene's "Never Been to Me" - loved that as a 10 year old and would belt it out! 😂

Chuffles · 04/05/2024 13:10

Great thread - lots of tunes I'd forgotten. Such a great era for music. Thanks OP.

Realise I mixed up my (Detroit) Emeralds and Spinners - this is the stone cold classic I meant:

Also a mention for the Doobie Brothers - Long Train Runnin' is my fave but Listen to the Music is also great

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/05/2024 17:16

Ooh, ooh - just remembered - SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER was released in 1977.

Which means that entire album is 70s music. And very much favourite!Grin

Another group Tourists - Good to be back home

Renaissance- Northern Lights

Littledidsheknow · 04/05/2024 20:03

Good call with Sad CafÊ, @rkahic

Added a couple of Bread @VeganFromSveden

Got the Doobies, @Chuffles will add some Detroit Emeralds.

The Gibson Brothers @Dash1863 ! Had forgotten them! I must add a couple. My favourite was "Cuba"

Quality list @TeabySea I'll be sure to add your songs.

Got some BeeGees @WhereYouLeftIt . I never used to be a fan, but had a listen while compiling the playlist and thoroughly enjoyed it, great stuff. Tragedy is pure brilliance.

@InTheUpsideDownToday oh, for sure, Convoy would very much in that category...

Well, you know, this started as me asking for ideas for my own playlist, but as people have taken an interest it's really become a joint affair, and so I'm going to add every single suggested song now. Yes, even Telephone Man and Convoy!
I may have to draw the line at Charlene though...😂

Won't get a chance until tomorrow now, but will do it in the morning. I'm sure it should update for everyone automatically, but I'll add a new link then just in case.

Thanks again for all your amazing suggestions😁

I think her Album was released in 1977 with that song on but then re-released in 1982.
I'll have to dig out my 45 single 😊
