Your favourite city break

Looking to take my DP away on a city break abroad just the two of us next year for his 40th.

I’ve looked at a few places but cannot for the life of me decide on where. He’s always wanted to go to Italy so I’m possibly swaying towards taking him there but unsure which city yet.

Anyway I guess my reason for the post is I’d like to know what your favourite city break was & why?

OP posts:
Heartoverhead1 · 24/04/2024 22:39

Seville was beautiful.

Twoweeksandcounting · 24/04/2024 22:39

My favourite was Seville. Beautiful food, weather, culture, just gorgeous! Really easy city to get around, lots to do. Fully recommend!

Twoweeksandcounting · 24/04/2024 22:40

There you go; that’s two for Seville. You have to go!

BIossomtoes · 24/04/2024 22:46

Seville is fabulous. If he likes Italy and hasn’t been to Florence it’s lovely. It’s a tiny city with wonderful food, lots of art, fantastic ice cream and lots of people watching.

Costacoffeeplease · 24/04/2024 23:56

Venice, Nice, Lisbon

Celia24 · 24/04/2024 23:59

I agree it has to be Florence if Italy. But Rome and the colosseum etc would be a good second option :)

catwithflowers · 25/04/2024 00:02

Rome if he wants to go to Italy, Seville if you choose Spain 🥰

FranklySonImTheGaffer · 25/04/2024 08:12

For Italy, I would say Rome as long as he doesn't mind somewhere that's busy.

Outside of Italy, my favourites (in order) are
Prague
Krakow
Budapest
Oslo

Pillowfights · 25/04/2024 08:16

Definitely Rome & Florence, both top of our favourite city break list

Both are perfect for sightseeing, people watching and of course eating & drinking!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/04/2024 08:18

Boston
Edinburgh
Reykjavik

Nothingandnobody · 25/04/2024 08:19

I loved Seville and Krakow.

VenusClapTrap · 25/04/2024 08:29

If it has to be Italy I’d go with Venice (out of season).

My favourite though is Girona. The old town is so pretty with little twisty lanes, interesting shops and great restaurants. Lovely views from walking along the old city walls.

My other favourites are Stockholm, Gent and Copenhagen.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 25/04/2024 08:33

I really love Naples but it’s not for everyone…
Florence is lovely too.

Penelope1703 · 25/04/2024 08:34

Another vote for Seville. Perfect for a weekend break.

Penelope1703 · 25/04/2024 08:34

Or Ghent which I loved

Wheeeeee · 25/04/2024 08:34

Clicked on the thread to say Seville and saw I was in good company! Depends on the time of year though - far far too hot in the summer.

BIossomtoes · 25/04/2024 08:38

I think Seville’s a winter destination. It was incredibly hot in mid October. I want to go back some time, probably in February.

VeronicaBeccabunga · 25/04/2024 08:42

We were in Seville in March and the weather was perfect for walking around and sightseeing.
Florence is gorgeous but one to go to in spring or autumn, I was there in November and it was quite cold in the evenings.

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/04/2024 08:47

If he wants to go to Italy Bologna is a good bet. Amazing food, beautiful town and an easy trip to places like Parma.

Turin is another great Italian city. Lots of heritage, amazing food and near the Alps. We got the train there from Paris and it is a beautiful journey.

Ginmonkeyagain · 25/04/2024 08:48

But also yes to Seville, it is beautiful but don't go later than early May - it is punishingly hot in summer

cassiatwenty · 25/04/2024 08:53

Agree with PP who suggest Ghent, magical! Antwerp, as well, very charming.

Saintmariesleuth · 25/04/2024 08:56

When are you looking to go OP, as my answer would change depending on the weather. Also, is there anything your partner is particularly interested in (e.g history? Art?)

I have loved:
Rome
Lisbon
Prague
Budapest

BringMeSunshineAllDayLong · 25/04/2024 08:57

In Italy I love Sienna and Florence.
Other places I've enjoyed:
Santiago de Compostela
Lisbon
Amsterdam
Freiberg
Krakow
Warsaw
A surprise UK hit was Coventry!

Saintmariesleuth · 25/04/2024 08:59

@BringMeSunshineAllDayLong not to derail the thread, but can I ask what you loved about Coventry? I'm looking at taking a couple of UK breaks this year but not sure where to go yet

CharlotteStreetW1 · 25/04/2024 09:02

My answer is always the last place I went to which in this case was Naples which was incredible. A really fun place and not as expensive as some places.

My first trip to Italy was to Florence which was fabulous too. Rome is obviously great too. And of course Venice.

(Milan and Turin not so much)

Sevlle (and Cordoba) is also lovely.
