My house is 13⁰.
It's not like I even live in the Scottish Highlands... I'm in the SE of England.
It's nearly May.
It's not fair <stamps foot petulantly>

They were saying on the weather forecast that April has actually been warmer than average. Has it chuff! It's freezing and I'm still in brushed cotton bedlinen and hot water bottle territory. When I'm in bed with a hottie, bed socks and pyjamas it's the only time I'm warm all day.

CatsLikeBoxes · 24/04/2024 21:19

@CrushingOnRubies I am very suspicious of your claim that it is warming up in Cornwall. I fear you have fallen victim to acclimatising to the eternal winter. According to the met office the high in Penzance today was meant to be 12⁰. And the forecast highs for the next 5 days are between 13⁰ tomorrow and 10⁰ on Friday!

I said to DH today, as we were out and about, that it’s ridiculous that most people are still wearing padded coats and woollen hats at the end of April. There aren’t even the usual number of men in shorts round here.

Greywitch2 · 24/04/2024 21:19

It's 8 degrees here. (Or was earlier, it's probably much less now).

I've had the coal fire on all afternoon and I'm just about to go to bed with a hot water bottle. I'm fed up with being cold.

downbutnotouttake969 · 24/04/2024 21:23

My Facebook memories reminded me that I have been sunbathing in shorts in April some years.
This year I'm still waiting to put the thermals away.
I am fed up of putting on several layers just to get out of bed - it's exhausting

CatsLikeBoxes · 24/04/2024 21:24

@Butteredtoast55 if it's managed to be warmer than usual (perhaps they meant in Cornwall!) it can only be because it's being consistent or something. Usually we might expect some V cold days but interspersed with some warmer days. This month, apart from 2 warm days, it's not been snow-cold (in the SE) but it's just consistently chilly

Yup! Took DD out in her pram for a stroll today as it was sunny. My nose was frozen when we got back in. Currently huddled under the duvet with the thermostat claiming the house is 19.5 degrees (my foot it is!) wind is picking up here again 🫠 give me some heat please!!!!

Butteredtoast55 · 24/04/2024 21:27

I know @CatsLikeBoxes It certainly hasn't felt warmer than usual! Even on the days with warmish sun, the air has been bitter.

DryFebEmma · 24/04/2024 21:28

I don't think it's that unusual! Have quite often had to have winter coats out until nearly June in the past and I'm in the midlands.

IClaudine · 24/04/2024 21:28

RefurbMyAlloys · 24/04/2024 21:12

Me too, OP!! 🥶

Suns been out but, wow, it’s so cold!❄️❄️

wearing DPs thermal T-shirt, trackie bottoms, a big hoodie and huddled under a teddy-bear fleece blanket… and still cold. Trying to persuade floofy fluffy dog on to sofa to cuddle but she’s dozing in her bed.
Its May next Wednesday…
And Christmas Eve in 8 months..😱

And Christmas Eve in 8 months

I am reporting your post to MNHQ for being v v depressing 😭😭😭

WhitegreeNcandle · 24/04/2024 21:28

Me too! I wore a wooly hat today - ao
fed up of the cold and mud

JamSandle · 24/04/2024 21:28

I had my winter coat and a beanie on today.

I mean it's not boiling but I'm wearing a body warmer and a lighter weight jumper as opposed to thick coat and woollens

Out of the wind and in the sun it's quite pleasant

Lorrymum · 24/04/2024 21:33

It was warm a few weeks ago and I washed and packed away jumpers and sweatshirts. Couldn't believe that I had to start wearing them again!

MigGirl · 24/04/2024 21:33

It was 3C here this morning and I really felt it. I mean I put a vest on, long sleeve top, thick fleece and my winter coat, and still felt cold 🥶. We also had hail today, actually we have had hail everyday this week.

edwinbear · 24/04/2024 21:38

WFH today (also SE England) I had a ski thermal base layer, fleece, oodie and fingerless gloves on. I was still cold so had to plug the electric throw and electric foot warmer in to try and get warm. Still have the electric blanket on the bed on all night (mainly for DCats benefit 🤣). Can’t get any of the bloody washing dry.

SabreIsMyFave · 24/04/2024 21:38

I AM SICK OF IT

SICK OF IT

SICK OF IT!!!!!!!!!

Did I say I was sick of it?!

Why is it so cold? WHYYYYYYYYY?! Sad

I don't think the temperature has hit double figures in April yet. It's May next Wednesday! It HAS to pick up soon. We better have the best bloody SUMMER after this 6 month cold and wet period! (Apart from a warm week in February. But what's the point in warm weather in February? There is nowhere open/nowhere to go!)

At least it's a bit sunnier now, and set to be sunny for the next 3-4 days. (Thankful for small mercies and all that!) 😬

AFmammaG · 24/04/2024 21:38

Amen OP. So tired of the cold 🥶 tired of the layers. Tired of the heating. Tired of the kids being ill all the time. Sigh.

Delatron · 24/04/2024 21:47

CatsLikeBoxes · 24/04/2024 21:13

@Marchintospring yes, the light is very welcome but also a reminder that being light means it should be warmish!

Yeah exactly. The light is teasing us - it should be warmer but it’s sooo cold. It’s nearly May, the longest day is June!! I want to make the most of the long days soon.

Hope all those that love Winter are happy with this endless cold and high heating bills. If anyone dares moan the minute it finally gets warm… it’s been cold for 7 months!!

I’ve actually managed my SAD this year quite well but I’ve been thoroughly depressed this week. We’ve had floods, rain, hardly any sun and now when it should be warming up we can’t even have temperatures in to double figures. It was this cold in January.

CatsLikeBoxes · 24/04/2024 21:50

@SabreIsMyFave I'm getting a slight hint that you might be sick of it? Lucky you for forecast sun. I see London might hit the tropical heights of 16⁰ on Monday but the next few days look likely to require many layers AND an umbrella. Though I think it's how cold my house is that is the most upsetting thing!

I'm so cooollllldddd

Oh this makes me feel smug…
I moved to Sydney. The vast majority of days are in the 20s. A few months of 30ish (hate those, too humid) in summer, and a few months of high teens (love those) in winter. Otherwise, it’s a very pleasant 20-28 degree every day.
I miss proper seasons, but the trade off is definitely worth it when I read threads like this! ☀️

feellikeanalien · 24/04/2024 21:53

I've got the fire on and am still using my big coat. I had to take DD to A&E last week and when we got out at 1.30 in the morning it was minus 2.

I've still got my winter tyres on!!

CatsLikeBoxes · 24/04/2024 21:55

@mjf981 well luckily I can reassure you that there are currently no seasons to miss.... It's been consistently chilly and wet for months. Autumn, winter, spring have been very similar.
It's quite mean of you to come on our tragic shivery thread and be all smug and warm though! (I'm so jealous!)

OP posts:
Tigersonvaseline · 24/04/2024 22:05

@feellikeanalien I don't know why but I thought we didn't have winter tyres in the UK?

VenusClapTrap · 24/04/2024 22:11

It’s like spring used to be. Showery and a bit chilly. We’ve just become accustomed to warmer weather because in recent years we’ve had lots of heatwaves in March and April. The tulips are loving it this year because they’re not getting fried for a change.
